Amazon buys UpNext – a 3D mapping startup

UpNextWhile Apple has been distancing itself from Google with the introduction of its own mapping service, it looks like Amazon might be following suit in the near future. According to reports online, the company recently bought up a 3D mapping startup, UpNext. The conditions of the deal weren’t mentioned – neither were what Amazon plans to do with the startup but we can be pretty sure it’s going to be the inclusion of a mapping service on the next generation Kindle Fire tablet (the current version lacks a GPS system).

With the Kindle Fire 2 rumored to be launched in July, we might not have to wait too long to find out. Stay tuned and we’ll keep you posted.

Toshiba found guilty of LCD price-fixing

A jury in San Francisco ruled that the Japanese electronics conglomerate that is Toshiba conspired with vendors to keep LCD prices “artificially high”. The jury found out that Toshiba and its subsidiaries conspired with other manufacturers of Thin Film Transistor-Liquid Crystal Displays to raise and fix the prices of TFT-LCD panels. Toshiba decided to fight the allegations in federal court while other defendants in the class-action lawsuit settled the case outside the court. In December last year, seven LCD manufacturers, including Sharp, Samsung, and Hitachi, agreed to pay may more than $553 million overall to settle the allegations that they all conspired to control the pricing of LCD panels.

The jury determined earlier today that Toshiba is liable to return $70 million to consumers who bought its products, and pay $17 million to manufacturers who used its LCD panels – amounting to $87 million overall. But that could be tripled since the federal antitrust law requires the trebling of these damages. “There was strong evidence that Toshiba participated in the price-fixing conspiracy through communications with other TFT-LCD manufacturers. The jury rejected Toshiba’s claim that it had done nothing wrong, and this is one of the few antitrust class actions ever tried to a successful verdict,” said Bruce Simon, the lead counsel for the plaintiffs.

Google does some late Spring cleaning and discontinues Mini Search Appliance, iGoogle, and a few other products

Google has announced today that it will discontinue many of its older products. Ever since co-founder Larry Page took over as CEO last april, the company has looked to shave excess weight by discontinuing products are out of date or just unpopular.  Headlining today’s closures was the Google Mini enterprise search appliance. The Mini, which is a smaller box version of its larger cousin, the search enterprise, was designed for customers rather than big business enterprises. Matt Eichner, General Manager of Global Enterprise Search, said in a blog post that the Mini would be replaced by the Search Appliance and cloud-hosted applications such as Site Search and Commerce Search. The Mini will officially be discontinued on July 31st.

Netflix has one billion viewing hours in June, more than any cable channel [analyst]

Netflix has crossed a milestone this month. It has passed the billion hour mark for the first time ever in company history during the month of June. The feat was announced on CEO Reed Hasting’s Facebook page.. This accomplishment definitely shows the growing popularity of streaming services such as Netflix as opposed to using traditional cable TV. Netflix hit the 2 billion mark in Q4 of 2011 over the period of 3 months.

According to GigaOM, BTIG analyst Richard Greenfield took it upon himself to break down the Facebook post and reveal some interesting info. He estimated that Netflix had around 24 million subscribers in June, which means that on average, each user watched 80 minutes of content daily during the month of June. Those numbers easily compete with many cable channels, which we don’t have the viewership numbers for yet, but based on Mr. Greenfield’s research, Netflix would be the most popular cable channel if it was one. Another impressive note is that even in households with cable, Netflix still beat out ABC and CBS according to Greenfield.

Expect tensions to rise among Netflix and the cable channels as many cable believe that streaming services such as Netflix are killing their viewership, and according to these numbers they definitely are. Hasting expects Netflix to continue to pass the 1 billion mark when Arrested Development and When House of Cards debut.

Smart Product Design Contest by iFixit, Core77 and Autodesk

We seem to be surrounded by “smart” products these days – smart cars, smartphones, smart homes, smart windows…the list goes on and on, but does this mean that humans are getting less and less smart? Well, if you do not think so, and feel that us humans still have the upper hand in terms of smartness, then you might be interested to check out the Smart Product Design Contest by iFixit, Core77 and Autodesk which offers a delicious prize for those who aim for nothing but the top – a trip to A Better World by Design Fall Conference in Providence, RI, USA which will be held from September 27-30 later this year, in addition to a fully paid round trip airfare, 3 nights’ stay at the hotel, a conference pass, $1,000 in spending money, and an iFixit tool kit and tool box.

I would assume that if you are able to figure out what we might need which is not only connected and wired, but will also be nice to the environment and not a pain to take apart and repair at all, while boasting the longevity of consumer electronics of yore, you should be able to nick the top prize without a fight. The thing is, in this day and age, is such a device possible? You have your say in the Smart Product Design Contest then.

Google Q device is Made in the USA

The Google Nexus Q is a home media player that was just unveiled yesterday during the Google IO keynote. It is an Google experiment (in a crowded market) that is well designed, attractive and hard to build. Interestingly, the Google Nexus Q is also an experiment in USA-based manufacturing. At the bottom of the device, there’s a sticker which says “Made in the USA”. This is almost symbolic for a company that has had strained relations with the Chinese government.

Talking to the NYTimes, Andy Rubin (the Android business General Manager) said that Goole wanted to try manufacturing “something” in the USA, and thought ‘Why don’t we try it and see what happens?’ The google Nexus Q is an ideal test candidate as it is hard to build, but quantities should be low at the same time.   (more…)

Google publishes “Hangouts in Air” Project Glass video

We already told you that Google’s Project Glass was shown at the Google I/O keynote today where the company revealed further details of the device. But if there’s one thing that mesmerized us during the event, it’s the video demo of Project Glass that Google co-founder Sergey Brin presented to us while explaining the capabilities of the device. Some gutsy guys in the video were skydiving, doing bicycle stunts, and rapelling down the building while wearing Project Glasses.

But unfortunately, not everyone got the chance to watch the thrilling video. Thankfully, Google published a video of Project Glass a few hours ago showing the highlights of the stunt. Sergey Brin said that he wanted to share the one-of-a-kind demo for all of you guys to enjoy. The video is about 2 minutes long and it features We Were Promised Jetpacks’ Quiet Little Voices song. And oh, there’s also another rough video of the epic moment during Sergey’s keynote speech this morning. You can check it out here.
