Are you Saving or Spending the Rebate Check?

This article was written on April 25, 2008 by CyberNet.

rebate check.pngGeeks are sometimes given the stereotype as being big spenders on gadgetry, from computers to video game systems. You, yourself, may be a spender. While some do always have to have the latest and greatest of anything electronic, not all geeks are frequently forking out the cash.

Now that most people living in the United States will be receiving a refund check from the government within the next month or so, a survey was done to see what people would be doing with the money. NPD Group conducted one such survey and even though “geeks” could easily go out and spend the $600 or $1200 on a new computer or a sleek TV, what they found is that people will actually be saving the money.

Maybe geeks won’t be spending because they already own the latest and greatest (haha) and nothing enticing has come out? Or maybe it’s because those who follow technology trends aren’t as big of spenders as everybody thought? Regardless, the bottom line from a PC Magazine article says that geeks are planing to save the money they receive from their tax rebate and not spend it.

If you’re getting a rebate check, what is it that you plan to do with the extra cash?

South Korea Won’t Use Huawei Equipment For Sensitive Communications With U.S.

South Korea Wont Use Huawei Equipment For Sensitive Communications With U.S.

Its no secret that the U.S. doesn’t trust Huawei’s networking equipment. It has been alleged quite a few times that Huawei’s equipment might allow the Chinese government to spy and snoop around, these allegations lead to speculation late last year that Huawei could step out of the U.S. market for good. Apparently Washington had the same concerns when South Korea allowed Huawei to develop its advanced wireless network, so Seoul has reportedly agreed to route all sensitive communications with the U.S. through networks that don’t use Huawei equipment. This according to unnamed U.S. officials who spoke with The Wall Street Journal.

CyberNotes: Sanyo Launches 42 Inch Weatherproof LCD Monitor

This article was written on November 13, 2006 by CyberNet.

    CyberNotes
    Million Dollar Monday

Last week we wrote about the LG 100 inch LCD TV that is set for mass production and has been deemed by the Guiness Book of World Records as the largest! This week we’re still sticking with LCD displays, but we’re scaling back a bit and switching from TVs to monitors.  The reason? Sanyo has recently unveiled their 42 inch LCD monitor, and what makes it unique is that fact that it is weatherproof.  Simply the fact that it’s weatherproof tells you it’s meant for the outdoors!

The cost has been rumored to be around three times the price of any standard 42 inch LCD display. It is capable for using even with dusty, humid, and other questionable environments. The obvious common uses will be for courtyards and pools, however it is really capable of being installed just about anywhere.

This monitor is high definition, and could possibly change  how gamers operate! Instead of sitting in the house all day, gamers will be able to move their addiction outside and continue to play on their weatherproof display.

    A few additional specs:

    • Brightness: 500cd/m2
    • Resolution: 1366X878
    • Viewing angle of 178 degrees

Body Odor Used In ID Identification

Body Odor Used In ID Identification Fingerprints, a social security number, your dental records – the list goes on when it comes to identifying your identity. How about one’s body odor? BoIn happens to be a possible futuristic form of biometric identification, where it will be able to figure out just who you are using your body odor alone. It seems that fingerprints, iris scans and facial recognition will have another “friend” to join the biometric identification posse, although the rest seem a whole lot more dignified. Scientists over at Spain’s Universidad Politécnica de Madrid have stated that one’s scent has the potential to remain similar even over time without changing, so much so that one can achieve an ID accuracy rate of approximately 85%.

Reader Trends & Graphs Added to Google Reader

This article was written on January 04, 2007 by CyberNet.

At the end of September, Google Reader released their big update. It was a huge improvement, and in my opinion, much needed. It featured a new look, and a load of new features. Since then, there really hasn’t been a whole lot of excitement going on with new features, until yesterday. Google announced on the Google Reader blog that a new feature has been implemented called Reader Trends which can be found on your Google Reader homepage. If you like charts and tables to analyze data, you’ll love this new feature. Particularly, it will be most useful to those who subscribe to many feeds, or who use the Reader daily.

Now all of your reading trends are graphed out in easy to read graphs.  One option is to display a graph showing your reading trends day by day for the last 30 days, and it shows you how many items were read over the last month. Another display option is to show the time of day that items are read whether it’s morning noon or night. The last display option shows you when feeds are read by the day of the week. Between the three different options, you get a good idea of what time of day you read your feeds, and how often.

There is also helpful information next to each subscription.  It gives you the number of news items read for each feed, and then also provides what percent have been read out of all of them.  This gives you a good idea of the feeds you could probably unsubscribe from if you’re not reading them. You can also view two other tabs within this section to view your starred or shared items. Between the graphs, and the information given on the number of feeds you’ve read, you should get a picture of how much time you spend scouring the Internet for news.

The final new feature is the subscription trends diagram which shows you all of your subscriptions, and how many items are posted per day.  From that, you’re given the percentage of items you’ve read out of the items posted for each subscription. Within the subscription trends is a tab for all of your inactive feeds, the ones that haven’t updated recently.

All of these graphs are more for fun than anything else.  It might be interesting to see just how many subscriptions you read, and when, and out of those subscriptions, how many are left unread. So while it’s a fun new feature for users, think about all of the useful information Google has always had, but that’s now organized into graphs for them. They’ve got a good picture of what people subscribe to most, and what time of  day they get read! This is great information for Google, who’s already in the advertising business.

Comcast And Time Warner Cable Merged

Comcast And Time Warner Cable MergedComcast has agreed to take in Time Warner Cable in the latest corporate merger over in the U.S., where this agreement happens to be a friendly, stock-for-stock transaction. In this particular merger, Comcast will pick up every single bit of Time Warner Cable’s 284.9 million shares which amounts to roughly $45.2 billion where equity value is concerned, and each Time Warner Cable share will be exchanged for 2.875 shares of CMCSA, equal to Time Warner Cable shareholders who happen to own around 23% of Comcast’s common stock. This particular transaction is said to generate around $1.5 billion in operating efficiency, and it will also be tax free to Time Warner Cable shareholders. There is one major talking point about this particular transaction – it will hopefully manage to create a leading technology and innovation company, where it leverages on a national platform while offering ground-breaking products, creating operating efficiencies and economies of scale.

    Researchers Develop Non-Flammable Li-ion Batteries

Researchers Develop Non Flammable Li ion BatteriesYou might have come across warnings in the past about how if you notice that your phone swells up, it could be a sign that it could explode as the swelling would be caused by the lithium-ion battery in it. You might have also come across stories of phones catching fire, also possibly due to its lithium-ion battery, and some more famous lithium-ion battery problems include Boeing’s 787 Dreamliner which has been grounded several times due to issues with its battery. Well the good news is that thanks to researchers at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, flammable lithium-ion batteries could soon be made a thing of the past.

According to the researchers, they claimed to have developed the first non-flammable lithium-ion battery, which was achieved by replacing the electrolyte’s flammable organic solvent with an industrial lubricant which is known as perfluoropolyether (PFPE). This industrial lubricant is typically used in maritime applications to prevent sealife from sticking to the bottom of large boats. Leader researcher, Joseph DeSimone, says, “These electrolytes not only are completely nonflammable, but they also exhibi unprecedented high transference numbers and low electrochemical polarization, indicative of longer battery life.” Now the bad news is that this discovery is far from being made commercial as additional testing has to be performed, such as whether it will be able to withstand constant charging and discharging, as well as how to mass produce it, but it is a development worth keeping an eye on.
