Dell's Automated Customer Support

If you are ever looking for a good laugh then you need to head over to This Is Broken. That is where I found a user that submitted a technical support question just to receive a funny automated response. The user sent an email saying “I need a system restore CD for an inspiron 5150 purchased in 2003. Thanks!” and received the following email:

****************************************************** Original Message Follows: ***************************************** Problem: I need a system restore CD for an inspiron 5150 purchased in 2003. Thanks! *********************************************** Dell’s e-mail software interprets your message as a request for help with buying an auto/air AC adapter for your Dell notebook computer. To purchase an adapter to charge your portable computer from your car or while in an airplane go to: http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/default.aspx?cs=19&c=us&l=en * Click Notebook Accessories in the Browse For Products list * Click Power Adapters and then choose Auto/Air * Click the company name to see more details If you have other battery questions please check our general battery and AC adapter troubleshooting guide at: ftp://ftp1.us.dell.com/diags/R66243.htm

Dell obviously needs to work on their keyword matching system. From the looks of it the email must not have been sent to a support group and instead must have been sent to the sales department since they are obviously trying to get you to purchase some accessories. 😀

I thought this was pretty funny since many of us have had similar experiences where technical support people don’t even understand what we want. So how can they expect a computer to be able to figure it out?

AllCast Chromecast App Regains Its Core Feature

AllCast Chromecast App Regains Its Core Feature

Google released the $35 HDMI dongle, Chromecast, last year and it sold out soon after the fact. The company itself claimed that demand for the dongle had been underestimated. Tinkerers had their way with the dongle, rooting it and opening up additional functionality, before Google rolled out a firmware update and closed that door. Popular Android developer Koushik Dutta created the AllCast Chromecast app back then which allowed users to stream content from their device’s gallery, which the dongle doesn’t allow by default. He had to take the app down and remove the functionality, while continuing to support almost every major media streaming device. Today AllCast has regained its very beating heart.

Nanotips Could Make Your Glove Touchscreen Friendly

Nanotips Could Make Your Glove Touchscreen FriendlyWho would have thought that just about every modern day mobile device would feature touchscreen functionality these days, which is a far cry from the alphanumeric or QWERTY keyboard that we saw in mobile phones some years back? Well, having said that, those who live in tropical countries where it is warm all year round would never run (or perhaps, rarely) into the frustrating experience of trying to use a touchscreen display while wearing a glove. It can drive you nuts especially during winter, where you want to keep your fingers nice and warm, but still need to attend to all the incoming messages and calls on your smartphone. Taking off and putting on the glove over and over again can get tedious, which is why this Kickstarter project known as Nanotips could change the game forever.

Google Mystery Barge Receives Orders To Move

Google Mystery Barge Receives Orders To Move

A few months back mystery barges appeared at Pier 1 of Treasure Island in San Francisco as well as Maine harbour, leading to widespread speculation about the ownership of these structures. Some believed Google was behind the project, and that these barges will essentially function as a “floating showroom for Google Glass.” The company then confirmed that it was behind the barges, but merely classified them as interactive learning spaces. The barge docked at Pier 1 has now been ordered by the State of California to move.

Text Messages Used To Encourage Weight Loss

Text Messages Used To Encourage Weight LossAre you looking to lose weight? Being disciplined and being focused helps, but so does having external sources of motivation, and that’s what the city council of Stoke-on-Trent in the UK is trying to do. The council has recently announced a rather novel approach to motivating its citizens to lose weight by sending out daily motivational text messages to residents of the city who are considered to be overweight. This basically covers about 500 people in total and will supposed cost £10,000 in total, which is about $16,000 when converted.

So what’s the deal with this approach? Well apparently the council decided that it would act as an early intervention meant to prevent additional expense that comes with invasive surgical procedures. Some of the examples of text messages include the ones in the screenshot above. This project will last for 10 weeks and while it does sound like a good idea, not everyone is in approval. Opposition members believe that the £10,000 could be put towards better use. We guess we will have to wait until the end of the program to see how effective it will be, but in the meantime what do you guys think? Do you think daily motivational text messages will help with weight loss?

Lenovo Intended On Acquiring Motorola Several Years Ago

Lenovo Intended On Acquiring Motorola Several Years AgoThe other day it was announced and confirmed that Lenovo would be buying Motorola Mobility from Google for around $3 billion, which is significantly less than what Google paid for the company back in 2011. That being said, it seems that acquiring Motorola Mobility was always part of Lenovo’s plan but due to a blunder, they missed out on the deal which then went to Google. According to Lenovo’s CEO, he stated that the reason Lenovo missed out on the opportunity several years ago was because they approached the wrong Motorola. Motorola had been split into two companies back in 2011: Motorola Solutions and Motorola Mobility.

Instead of approaching Motorola Mobility, Lenovo instead talked to Motorola Solutions’ CEO, Greg Brown, where they found that Motorola Solutions had nothing of value to Lenovo. By then it was too late as Google would then go ahead and acquire Motorola Mobility for a whopping $12 billion. Either way all things considered, we guess Lenovo did acquire the company in the end, although we’re not sure if $3 billion would have been considered a steal for the company, or if they would have paid less back in the day.

Brain Waves Used To Control Music Player

Brain Waves Used To Control Music PlayerThere is nothing quite as potent as the power of the mind – it is the one thing that keeps us going even through the darkest night for sure, as the glimmer of hope is there to ensure that life is worth living and fighting for. Those who happen to have severe disabilities and lack any kind of motor function would have to rely on others in order to do everything on their behalf. Still, their mental faculties are retained, and science intends to tap into such organ’s electrical activity. One such project involves researchers over at the University of Malta, where they have come up with an EEG-based system which is capable of detecting steady state visually evoked potentials (SSVEPs) as part of a response to the user checking out flashing buttons on a screen This would enable the user to control a music player using their brain waves alone.

Lawsuit Claims Gogo Overcharges For In-Flight WiFi

Lawsuit Claims Gogo Overcharges For In Flight WiFiWiFi in cafes, schools, and work places are pretty common. However WiFi in airplanes, that’s a different story. For the longest time ever, airplanes did not come with WiFi and entertainment came in the form of the small screen in front of the passenger, but with our need to stay connected these days, it was inevitable that WiFi was introduced to airplanes, although it did not come cheap. In-flight internet provider Gogo is one of the companies that provides WiFi to airline passengers and they have recently been hit with a class action complaint where the complainants claimed that the company has entered into illegal exclusive contracts with airline companies in a bid to overcharge customers for WiFi use.
