Dutch Court Reverses Block To The Pirate Bay Website, Fines Anti-Piracy Group

the-pirate-bay-most-popular-file-sharing-siteWhen it comes to seeking fines and damages, usually anti-piracy groups and the industries they represent, whether it be music, TV, movies, and etc., are usually the ones asking for it. In fact rarely do we come across an instance in which these groups are fined themselves, but that’s what happened over in the Netherlands when the Court of the Hague basically fined anti-piracy group, BREIN, to fork out €326,000 (which is roughly $445,600 after conversion) in damages to broadband providers. Last year Edward Snowden blew the whistle on U.S. National Security Agency’s clandestine electronic spying programs. Since then he has leaked a barrage of highly classified documents revealing various programs. Yesterday, in yet another Snowden leak, documents alleged that the NSA in collaboration with UK’s GCHQ had been siphoning off personal data of users through popular mobile applications. Super Bowl 2014 Video Streaming Blocked in MetLife Stadium

    metlife-stadium

Smartphones are everywhere these days, keeping us connected to our favorite people as well as social networks, consuming large amounts of data in the process. Its usual to see spectators post updates to social networks, stream highlights, check stats or keep themselves occupied between plays at sporting events, and a lot of that is bound to happen on Super Bowl Sunday. To ensure that spectators stay connected to social media during one of the year’s biggest sporting events, the NFL has confirmed that it will block Super Bowl 2014 video streaming inside the MetLife Stadium, where the Denver Broncos take on the Seattle Seahawks. Both official video streaming sources, NFL.com and Fox Sports, will be blocked on Wi-Fi and cellular networks at the stadium.

T-Mobile Sprint Merger: Magenta CEO Seems To Be Warming Up

    johnlegere

There has been much speculation about an imminent T-Mobile Sprint merger ever since it was first rumored that Sprint’s parent company, Softbank, was interested in acquiring the fourth largest U.S. carrier. Earlier this month, T-Mobile CEO John Legere gave off the vibe that the carrier was not interested in being taken over, saying that there was more potential for T-Mobile as an independent player. Last week it was rumored that Softbank has now entered in direct talks with Deutsche Telekom, which owns a controlling stake in T-Mobile U.S., and Legere now seems to be warming up to the idea of a merger.

Turkish Prime Minister Delivers Speech Via Hologram

If you have seen the older Star Wars movies, you probably remember the scene where Princess Leia delivers her plea for help via a hologram that was projected courtesy of R2-D2. Back then technology like that was the stuff of dreams, and apparently science fiction movies too, but fast forward a couple of decades later, holographic technology is no longer a concept that is in a galaxy far, far away. In fact recently the Turkish Prime Minister delivered a speech via hologram as he was unable to make the trip himself.

Speaking via hologram, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan delivered a speech to the people living in the city of Izmir where he appeared as a 10-foot tall projection which might seem pretty imposing. This was because he was unable to make the trip due to a party meeting in the western Turkish city, but based on the reaction of the crowd who were cheering, it seemed like the speech was a success. Like we said this is not the first time that holographic images have been used. In fact it was back in 2012 that hip-hop artists, Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg, performed live with a holographic image of Tupac Shakur. It was also in 2012 that Indian politician Narendra Modi delivered a speech himself in holographic form. Pretty cool stuff, huh? We wonder what sort of events we might expect in the future that would use holographic images.

H&M Wants You To Vote For David Beckham Ad

February 2 happens to be slightly more than a week away, where it is Super Bowl Sunday. Football fans will know that the Broncos and Seahawks will come face to face in New Jersey, where the conditions are downright chilly at this point in time. Of course, as with all of the other great Super Bowl traditions, you can look forward to the fancy advertisements that are being prepared even as you read this – hopefully without any wardrobe malfunctions along the way! H&M has decided to sign up high profile David Beckham, as the two of them work in tandem to push forward the Spring David Beckham Bodywear collection that will be arriving at H&M stores from January 30th onward. There are two versions of the spot ad, which will see Beckham making an attempt to return to a photo shoot after he was locked out, being stuck on the roof with nothing but his underwear.

Two versions of the ad will be on H&M’s website from January 27 onward, where you can then place your vote for the favorite – and the winner will be the one that makes its way to Super Bowl. He might have retired from playing soccer, but he still has a chiseled body that many would die for.

Microsoft’s Office Web Apps Could Be Rebranded To Office Online

officeonline-500x244Earlier today Microsoft rebranded their cloud storage service, SkyDrive, to OneDrive. The rebranding was reportedly due to an ongoing lawsuit between Microsoft and a UK broadcasting company who felt that the names were too similar. In any case hot on the heels of the rebranding, it seems that Microsoft might not be stopping there. According to ZDNET, Microsoft is expected to rebrand Office Web Apps as well, and will most likely be rebranding them as Office Online instead. These changes will also apply to the individual apps where they will be known as Word Online, Excel Online, PowerPoint Online, and OneNote Online, with Office Online templates expected to be released to users.

No word on when Microsoft will be launching this rebranding, but it seems that Microsoft could finally be doing what they said back in 2007 which was to rebrand and reposition its Office Online website, which at the moment is more of a place for Office subscribers to login as well as a platform where Microsoft can promote the Office 365 suite, so by rebranding Office Web Apps to Office Online, perhaps they can be used in conjunction with the website as well. In any case we’ll keep our eyes peeled for more info.

Select OneDrive Users Receiving Extra 20GB Of Storage

onedriveAs you might have heard the news by now, Microsoft has recently renamed their SkyDrive cloud storage service to OneDrive, and as part of that rebranding process, it seems that Microsoft has also reached out to loyal OneDrive users and offered them an additional free 20GB of storage. According to reports, Microsoft has started to send out emails informing these selected users that they will receive extra storage space as thanks for remaining loyal to the OneDrive service. We’re not sure what sort of requirements one has to meet in order to qualify for the extra storage (it has been speculated that it might only be for paying customers), but if you have been using the service for a while, be sure to keep an eye out on your inbox for the email!

This is not the first time that Microsoft has given out free storage. Back in 2013, Microsoft also gave early adopters of Outlook.com extra free storage, and the same was then applied to Windows Phone customers who were given an extra 20GB of storage themselves. In any case if you’re a OneDrive user who has been given the extra 20GB of storage, do let us know in the comments below, and for those who did not get the extra space, we’re sorry to hear!
