Microsoft’s Bill Gates is letting people how he makes use of technology in his work day. He has three monitors that he uses (as pictured) and all of them are hooked up to the same machine. This allows him to drag things across from one monitor to another in order to maximize his work area. His Outlook is on the left screen, then he views emails in the center screen and uses the screen on the right to browse the web.

His email is probably the best filtered in the world, since he has a personal secretary that composes a list of emails he receives that aren’t on his permitted list. His permitted list consists of people from HP, IBM, etc…

The amount of papers you will find on his desk are next to none. He wants almost everything in digital format for easy transferability and easy sharing. He uses the Web to get 90% of his news and OneNote to take any notes in a meeting.

The software he uses the most is Outlook, SharePoint (software for collaborating with others), OneNote (digital note taking), and Communicator (instant messaging and phone integration).

Honestly, I was expecting his office to be a little more extravagant than what it is. I am sure there is some stuff under-the-hood that he didn’t discuss like using a Pocket PC and possibly voice-activated devices in his office. The three 21″ monitors are a nice touch though 🙂 .

Germany’s Deutsche Telekom has a 67 percent controlling stake in T-Mobile U.S. The country’s fourth largest mobile carrier received a buyout bid from AT&T back in 2011, it was offered $39 billion, which it accepted. However the deal was blocked by regulatory authorities, and T-Mobile was compensated with roughly $7 billion in cash and spectrum. Since then, T-Mobile has become quite popular, in 2013 alone it made a number of “uncarrier” moves that brought in a lot of new subscribers. The carrier has bounced back in spectacular fashion, even after the botched deal with AT&T left its future uncertain. Deutsche Telekom CEO Timotheus Hoettges believes that the carrier is now back to the AT&T deal level, he pegs it at $42 billion.

Last year Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer announced that he would be giving up the top job at Redmond within 12 months. So far his successor has not been appointed, though there has been endless speculation about who is going to fill Ballmer’s shoes. It certainly won’t be an easy task, Microsoft has only ever had two CEOs in its entire history, Gates and Ballmer. Both of them have a seat on the board, which was reportedly irking many candidates who were in the running for the CEO slot. Perhaps the board might have convinced Ballmer to let go, as re/code reports, he might resign once a new CEO is appointed, thus ending his direct involvement with the company and its board of directors.

It almost seems like there’s nobody that you can trust these days. From governments spying on its own citizens, to retailers getting hacked, it seems like the world is just not safe anymore. Looking to add fuel to the fire is a report where personal details of over 20 million South Koreans might have been exposed after an employee at a credit ratings firm was arrested on suspicion that they might have taken confidential information and sold it to marketing firms. Given that marketing firms base their strategies on the behaviors of consumers which involves knowing who their consumers are in terms of age, income, gender, and so on, no doubt the stolen information would be a huge boon in their marketing efforts.

Based on the reports, the perpetrator was a temporary consultant who worked for the Korea Credit Bureau and is suspected to have stolen information from a variety of credit cards, such as KG Kookmin Card, Lotte Card, and NH Nonghyup Card. The stolen information was then allegedly sold to phone marketing companies. According to the Korean Financial Supervisory Service, they promised that the credit card firms will be covering any financial losses that might have been a result of the crime. To put this into perspective, the population of South Korea is at 50 million, meaning that almost half of the country had its information stolen and sold, which we have to say is a pretty damn big deal.

It may not necessarily be a crime, but a lot of subscription services would prefer that their subscribers keep their account credentials to themselves and not go about sharing it with friends and family who might have otherwise signed up, and paid mind you, for said subscription service. This doesn’t bother HBO though, CEO richard Plepler revealed in a recent interview. He said that its not like the cable juggernaut isn’t unmindful of the fact that subscribers are doing this, “it just has no impact on the business,” Plepler says.

Plepler was taking to Buzzfeed, so it wasn’t really a formal interview to begin with, the CEO isn’t even donning a necktie, most CEOs don’t give interviews without neckties! He believes that this is actually a smart marketing ploy that brings in more HBO viewers, “We’re in the business of creating addicts,” Plepler boasts in a way that would put Walter White to shame. So yeah, HBO’s cool like that, it doesn’t mind people sharing passwords, though it would go a long way if HBO GO was actually offered unbundled from cable packages. Plepler says that this is a move that he’s “always thinking about,” but its probably not going to happen soon.
