Target Malware Presumably Developed By A Russian Teenager

Target Malware Presumably Developed By A Russian Teenager

By now most of you might have heard about what happened to Target’s point-of-sale registers during the holiday season. They were infected with malware, which ended up compromising personal information of more than 70 million people. It was initially believed that the ringleader of this massive attack was based in Eastern Europe, though security firm IntelCrawler appears to have found the person who wrote the malware. Apparently it was a 17-year old Russian, having roots in St. Petersburg, who has sold more than 60 variants of the software to hackers based in Eastern Europe and other countries.

IntelCrawler is of the view that this teenager isn’t behind the attacks himself, his involvement is limited to the malware known as BlackPOS, which was found to have infected retailers such as Target and even Neiman Marcus. This programmer is “very well known” for his skill set in underground online communities for malware distribution, it is claimed. The security firm is of the view that this malware, or an iteration of it, might have affected other retailers as well, retailers who have yet to discover that they too were hacked. The security firm says that it has detected six breaches at various other retailers in the country, though it has refrained from naming them.

New Poll: How Often do you Reformat your Computer?

This article was written on January 03, 2007 by CyberNet.

Last week we started a poll asking which Google service needs to be updated more frequently.  It looks like the top priority isn’t about getting new features, it’s about bringing current Google services together into one easy-to-use package. Out of 685 votes, overwhelmingly, 69% of voters felt this way.  Next up was Gmail with 9% of the votes. In third place was Google Earth, with 4% of the voters felt needs to be updated more frequently.

Next up is… How often do you reformat your computer? Vote in the sidebar to your left!

Best of CES 2014 Ubergizmo Awards

Last week, we gave 10 Best of CES awards, and the physical trophies have already been delivered, but as a last look back on CES 2014, here’s the list for the record, and why we like those products or technologies. Here they are, in no particular order and see you next year for another crazy week in Las Vegas. Drop a comment to let us know what your favorite CES product was!

    1/ Intel Edison

Best of CES 2014 Ubergizmo AwardsIntel wants to enter the wearable tech market and their Edison SD-Card sized computer may just get them there much faster. We have seen some pretty small computers in the past, some as small as a shirt button, but Intel’s is basically a PC shrunk into the size of a memory card. The choice for using the SD card format is astute because device makers can already have access to a wealth of options to build their hardware. While the card uses the SD Card physical format, it is not limited at all by the SD protocol, so developers are free to build any system they want. We can’t wait to see the first prototypes. (more…)

    President Obama Announces NSA Reforms

President Obama Announces NSA ReformsGiven the hullabaloo over the NSA and their spying programs and tactics, safe to say many, including US citizens and other countries around the world, aren’t too pleased about it. The NSA’s argument is that their actions have been done for the sake of national security, and while that might be true, the methods used has since caused many to evaluate and question the integrity of tech companies and supposedly secure encryption software. In any case the good news is that President Barack Obama has since come forward and announced that there will be reforms made to the NSA, as he had promised he would address earlier this week. The Simpsons To Begin Streaming Onto Mobile This August

The Simpsons To Begin Streaming Onto Mobile This AugustThe Simpsons has to be one of the longest running cartoon series in the world and is beloved by millions around the world at the same time. Now the good news for those living in the US is that if you were hoping to catch up with some older The Simpsons episodes, you will be able to do so come August 2014 as all 530 episodes of The Simpsons will be made available for streaming via a VOD app for FX Networks. To make it even better, all seasons will be available at all times, meaning that you should be able to catch up to any episode you want at any given time ,as opposed to being cycled through various intervals which can be a little annoying and frustrating. The episodes are also expected to be cross-referenced and searchable in a variety of different ways.

Now there is some bad news and that is not everyone will be able to stream it. Like we said this is a US-only offer at the moment, and to top things off, the content will only be available to those who are authenticated subscribers of the FX Networks, meaning that not everyone in the US will be able to stream it either. It is unclear if the app is available for both iOS and Android, or if it will be exclusive to one platform only, but we’re guessing it’s probably the former. In any case if you’re a subscriber to the FX Networks and live in the US, come this August you will have a ton of content you can catch up on.

Pew Study Finds E-Books Are On The Rise

Pew Study Finds E Books Are On The RiseJust like how music lovers have started to embrace the digital life, we’re sure book lovers are starting to do so too with e-books and e-readers. Given that an e-reader can store hundreds, if not thousands of books in a device that’s thinner and lighter than a book, it makes sense especially if you’re tight on space or you want the convenience of your library being with you wherever you go. This is why it is not surprising to find that according to a recent Pew study, it has been found that Americans in general are starting to read more e-books, with the numbers rising from 23% at the end of 2012 to 28% at the end of 2013. However despite the rise in e-books, it’s a bit strange because a different Pew study has found that 46% of Americans own a tablet or e-reader, suggesting that not everyone who owns a tablet might actually be using it for e-books, despite its ability to do so.

Now you might be thinking that with these numbers, it’s a scary thought to think that e-books might eventually replace physical books, but that does not appear to be the case. In fact the study found that e-books are actually supplements to physical books, with seven in ten adults claiming to read both physical and e-books, while only 4% claim to read e-books exclusively. Personally I find that reading a physical book is somewhat more comfortable and also a lot more familiar compared to an e-book. The benefits of e-books cannot be denied, such as environmental friendliness due to the lack of paper used, and also convenience, but sometimes going old school is not such a bad thing either.

Giant 3D Printer Can Print A House In 24 Hours

Giant 3D Printer Can Print A House In 24 Hours3D printers have their uses. They are able to print all sorts of small-ish objects, ranging from toy dragons to even bones which are used medically, but wouldn’t it be cool if 3D printers could print something a lot bigger, say a house, for example? If you think that’s impossible, think again because the folks at the University of Southern California have designed a giant robot that is able to 3D print a house! In fact it works so fast that a 232sqm home can be actually built and finished in 24 hours! Dubbed Contour Crafting, the robot was the brainchild of Professor Behrokh Khoshnevis who calls it, “basically scaling up 3D printing to the scale of building,”

The printer will rely on being positioned on two tracks and will be able to work in both the X and Y axis once it has been calibrated. Now we’re sure some are wondering how might this affect the jobs of construction workers? Well undoubtedly there will be some side-effects to this, but according to Khoshnevis, “the reality is that a lot of new jobs can be created in this sector as well (from it).” In fact this technology might not necessarily have to be limited to just the Earth, but could also be sent into space where the technology might then be able to help create habitats on other planets. Now that would be pretty cool, wouldn’t it?

Japan To Deploy A Magnetic Net In Space To Clean Up Floating Debris

Japan To Deploy A Magnetic Net In Space To Clean Up Floating DebrisWe can’t really see it from where we are, but in reality there is a lot of junk floating in space and in our orbit. Its actually our fault since the junk consists of debris from previous space missions, and you would think that we would have learnt to clean up after ourselves already, but apparently not. Well it looks like Japan could be doing everyone a huge favor as the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) has announced a plan to create a gigantic magnetic space net that will basically attempt to scoop up all the junk that we have left floating around in space. Citi To Replace All Debit Cards Affected By Target Hack

Citi To Replace All Debit Cards Affected By Target Hack

By now you have probably heard about the massive Target hack. Personal as well as credit and debit card information of more than 70 million users was stolen as a result of this hack, which took place during the holiday season, a time when customer activity is usually high. Customers who were affected have already been advised to keep an eye on their bank activity and report any anomalies, but as a precautionary measure, Citigroup has announced that it is going to replace all customer debit cards that were affected by the hack.

While the financial juggernaut declined to reveal how many debit cards are being reissued, it did say that they weren’t replaced sooner because Citi wanted to minimize disruptions during the holiday shopping season. JPMorgan has already said that it will reissue new debit cards at many of its branches. It has been reported that Citi does not plan on reissuing credit cards that might have been affected by said hack. On the other hand, Target has announced that it is now offering a year’s worth of credit monitoring and identity theft protection to all affected customers, there’s a three month window to sign up for the free service, which normally costs $191.
