Business 2.0 Magazine Loses June Issue after Back-up System Failed

This article was written on May 02, 2007 by CyberNet.

Business20Practice what you preach has never been more true as in this situation.  Business 2.0 which is a magazine published by Time, just had the unfortunate situation of losing their entire June issue due to a system crash.

In their very own magazine, Business 2.0 has written about the importance of backing up your important files, saying backups are like flossing– “everybody knows it’s important, but few devote enough thought or energy to it.”

So after their editorial system crashed containing their June issue and they realized that their backup server hadn’t been working, they were faced with the realization that their June issue was gone and it wasn’t coming back.

Makes you wonder how long they’ve had a dysfunctional system for back-ups, doesn’t it? So lesson learned: Not only should you have a backup system, but perhaps multiple backups, off-site backups, whatever it takes. And once those back-up measures are in place, test them to make sure that they actually work. No one is immune to a hard drive failing, as we experienced a week ago.

Verizon FiOS Network Gets Faster with 50 Mbps

This article was written on January 12, 2007 by CyberNet.

The Verizon FiOS network is getting a speed boost! There’s lots of competition going on between different networks these days.  It’s always a race and a competition of who can offer the fastest speeds.  Verizon just upped the speeds on their FiOs network which currently has 522,000 users. Now they are offering 50 Mbps (as though 30 weren’t enough) downstream and 5 Mbps upstream.  Previously, their top speed offered was 30 Mbps on the downstream.

As the network speeds keep getting faster, it also seems that the prices just keep climbing as well.  No price has been set, however $179 is what they currently charge for 30 Mbps.  These higher speeds are only available in certain states (they’ve also just added a few), like New York, Connecticut, New Jersey, Massachusetts, and Road Island. I don’t know of anyone yet that has FiOS available in their area, so I’m still left to wonder if it’s worth the money! Just think, you could download 1 gig in about 2 minutes and 44 seconds.  Those speeds may sound too good to be true, which could be because there are still many websites that can’t support download speeds that fast.  Impressive nonetheless.

Security Breach At Target Compromises 70 Million Names, Phone Numbers, Emails, And More

Security Breach At Target Compromises 70 Million Names, Phone Numbers, Emails, And MoreBack in December 2013, a little before Christmas, retailer Target announced that their systems had been breached and that around 40 million credit card numbers were stolen in the process. Target then went on to reveal that encrypted bank PINs were stolen as well, and now according to a new report from the retailer, it seems that the security breach was larger than they had expected as it has been revealed that more than 70 million phone numbers, mailing address, email address, and names had been compromised as well. While most of this information can be readily found online, it can still be used by thieves and hackers who might use it for other nefarious purposes.

According to Target, the information about their customers are stored separately from the 40 million credit card numbers that were previously stolen, and while there could be overlapping information, Target did not reveal how extensive it was. However the semi-good news is that Target has since identified the point of attack which has since been closed off. It is unclear what the authorities are planning to do about these breaches at the moment, and if Target could be facing some legal consequences as well, if not from the government, from its shoppers possibly who might not appreciate having their information stolen as it could be seen as negligence on Target’s part. In any case this recent security breach is definitely not helping customers forgive and forget the previous incident.

BlackBerry’s Largest Shareholder Pumps In More Money

BlackBerrys Largest Shareholder Pumps In More Money

2013 was a particularly tough year for BlackBerry. Its stock reached an all time low, it ended up having to write down inventory worth billions of dollars, and it tried selling itself but failed to spark interest in any potential buyers. Fairfax Financial Holdings, BlackBerry’s largest shareholder, made an acquisition bid of $9 per share but apparently could not raise the required funding, so it pumped in $1 billion with a few other institutional investors. BlackBerry has now announced that Fairfax has agreed to pump in even more money, $250,000,000, in convertible debentures to be precise. The $1 billion investment was also made in convertible debentures.

That investment brought about major changes at the company. Its former CEO Thorsten Heins was pushed out in favor of turnaround expert John Chen, who is also the executive chairman of the board. Chen then removed top executives from the previous regimes, regrouped the company under four major divisions and appointed his very own team of high level executives. Under Chen BlackBerry also partnered up with Foxconn, which will be tasked with creating low-end and mid-range devices for emerging markets. This partnership will free BlackBerry from inventory management risks while it focuses on high-end devices and its enterprise business. The $250,000,000 transaction is going to be completed on or before January 16th, 2014.

T-Mobile Doesn’t Seem To Be Interested In Being Taken Over By Sprint

T Mobile Doesnt Seem To Be Interested In Being Taken Over By Sprint

Late last year rumors started circulating that Sprint, owned by Softbank, was interested in acquiring T-Mobile. The former is currently the third largest mobile carrier in the U.S., and even if it did end up acquiring T-Mobile, it still won’t be as big as Verizon or AT&T, but it would have a better chance of competing at a wider scale. Sprint wasn’t T-Mobile’s first suitor, Magenta accepted AT&T’s $39 billion takeover bid back in 2011 though it fell through due to regulatory concerns. Last year T-Mobile made a few bold moves, positioning itself as a bonafide player in the industry, and it seems to want to continue that momentum independently.

During a press conference yesterday, T-Mobile CEO John Legere laid down the law, saying that the “T-Mobile brand and people will stay.” According to him, all of the rumors are about spectrum, Sprint would certainly get its hands on a lot if it were to acquire T-Mobile, but Legere says T-Mobile will continue to pursue purchase of even more spectrum. Earlier this week it finally announced its much rumored spectrum swap deal with Verizon, getting its hands on lower frequency spectrum that was collecting dust over at Big Red. The CEO believes that this particular U.S. industry “needs a change agent,” and that there’s potential for T-Mobile as an independent carrier. The carrier certainly has made a few changes, it did away with conventional service contracts, offers free global 2G data roaming and will now pay your early termination fees if you decide to switch over from your current carrier to T-Mobile.

New Microsoft CEO Might Not Be Announced Until February

New Microsoft CEO Might Not Be Announced Until February

Ever since Steve Ballmer announced last year that he will be stepping down as CEO within the next 12 months, there has been a lot of speculation about who is going to become the new Microsoft CEO. It would certainly be a tough job heading a company that has only ever had two CEOs, co-founder Bill Gates and his successor Steve Ballmer. It was initially rumored that Ballmer’s successor will be announced by the end of 2013, but that didn’t happen. Then it was said that an announcement will be made in January. While the month has just started, a new report claims the announcement is off the cards until February at the very least.

    Jelly Social Search App

Jelly Social Search AppNow here is a spanking new app from Twitter’s co-founder known as Jelly, where the Jelly app will be able to deliver an answer to your question, although it will retrieve such an answer from your friends. Biz Stone announced the launch of Jelly, a new kind of startup which has been operating in stealth mode for approximately a year. This particular mobile app is available on both iOS as well as Android-powered devices, where it has been specially programmed to answer people’s questions with the help of photos and their current networks of friends.

In a nutshell, all you need to do is to capture a picture with your handset, write down a short caption that will best describe the question, and follow it up with a post. Sounds too easy, right? Hopefully the answers that you receive will be worth reading, and I am quite sure that some hilarious gems will pop up in screenshots in due time. For instance, asking “Worth reading?” might see an image of George Orwell’s “1984″ appear. What do you think of an app like Jelly, and will it be strong enough and not wobble in this highly competitive arena? You can also connect it to your Facebook and Twitter accounts, now how about that for a greater level of interaction? [Press Release]

    Bitcoin Sales Banned By Alibaba

Bitcoin Sales Banned By AlibabaBitcoin has gained plenty of traction as well as spotlight in recent times, and this time around, we have Alibaba Group Holding Ltd’s Taobao laying the smackdown on the sale of Bitcoins. This particular ban comes right after a government crackdown against the virtual currency so that it will be able to plug a potential gap in its tight controls on capital flows. Alibaba, China’s biggest e-commerce company, might have taken such a position against Bitcoin as they look to experience a smooth initial public offering of stock that is tipped to happen later this year.

Taobao’s statement that was posted recently claimed that this particular ban will come into effect from January 14, 2014 onward, mentioning, “The central bank clearly requires third-party payment services to close Bitcoin…trading channels.” Apart from that, Alibaba spokeswoman Florence Shih has also shared, “In the interest of consumer protection, Taobao has banned the sale of Bitcoins on the platform.”

What do you think of the Bitcoin craze that has seemingly swept across many people’s minds these days? Do you think that Bitcoin will be all that it is meant to be, or is it the start of another possible Tulip craze? Only time will be able to tell, so stay strapped in for the ride!

Amazon Confirms Giant Box Found On Reddit Is Real

Amazon Confirms Giant Box Found On Reddit Is RealIf you have been keeping an eye on your Facebook newsfeed or lounging about in reddit, you might have noticed a photo go by, which is a photo of a truck with what appears to be a huge box from Amazon on the back. Naturally some were wondering if this could be real, and more importantly does Amazon even have a box that big? Naturally some were calling this a hoax. Even comedian Jerry Seinfeld thought it was a fake as well, but as it turns out it is real as an Amazon spokeswoman was recently confirmed that the box is indeed real.

In a email, Amazon’s Kristin Schaefer Mariani wrote, “Yes, it’s real. [I]t’s Nissan delivering a Versa Note, the final component of the advertising program we worked with them on late last year.” There were some who speculated that this could be the case, but we guess no one really thought that Amazon would actually deliver said vehicle in a box packaged that way. Then again Amazon’s boxes are sort of iconic, even spawning toys such as Danbo which is a little toy figurine whose body is made using Amazon’s boxes. Now that we know that the box is real, we have to wonder if Amazon might have even bigger boxes in their factory. What do you guys think?
