Sony CEO Kazuo Hirai Candid On 4K, TV Content & Wearable Tech

Sony CEO Kazuo Hirai Candid On 4K, TV Content & Wearable TechEarlier today, we sat down with Sony CEO Kazuo Hirai and a small group of journalists to catch up with Sony announcements at CES 2014. Many questions were asked, and Mr. Hirai answered as candidly as he could without announcing anything new. Here are the highlights:

4K adoption & content availability

This is the obvious question that most people want to know: basically “if one buys a 4K TV, what content is available, and how fast will new content arrive? Kazuo Hirai acknowledged that these things “don’t happen overnight” and pointed out that it took years between the apparition of HD (1080p) and its large-scale adoption. We’re basically at the beginning of 4K and it will also take years before it becomes a mass-market.

He didn’t get into details, but my interpretation of this is that mass-market is when 50” 4K TVs cost around $2000 and $2500. I personally believe that 4K will come much quicker than HD did because the world has gone digital and content is already being produced in 4K. In fact, if you look at the upcoming content, most big budget movies will be available in 4K fairly quickly. Now, if each of us will have his/her own appreciation of “when” 4K availability will be good enough, but from the looks of it, this should not be a huge problem in the next 18 months. I anything, the content will come before prices will reach a point where 4K becomes a mass-market product. (more…)

Singer Lily Allen’s Lost Bitcoin Opportunity Could Be Worth Hundreds Of Millions

Singer Lily Allens Lost Bitcoin Opportunity Could Be Worth Hundreds Of MillionsBitcoin – whether you love or hate the virtual currency, you cannot deny its value at the moment, which at the moment is sitting at around $840 for a single Bitcoin. Of course rewinding the clock some five years ago, the currency was worth almost nothing, but we guess not many could have predicted its meteoric rise, and those who did not get in on it are probably regretting it right about now. One of the people highly regretting it at the moment is celebrity, Lily Allen, who has recently taken to Twitter to express her regret at not accepting Bitcoin as payment for one of her concerts several years ago.

According to Allen, “About 5 years ago someone asked me to stream a gig live on second life for hundreds of thousNds of bitcoins, “as if” I said. #idiot #idiot” Based on what Bitcoin is worth at the moment and assuming Allen isn’t exaggerating when she said “hundreds of thousands”, she would have at the very least walked away with a whopping $84 million for her performance! However like we said, not many would have predicted Bitcoin gaining so much value over the past few years, and for all we know it could be a bubble waiting to burst, but had Allen accepted the payment and cashed in when Bitcoin was at its highest, she could have easily retired right there and then.

Anyone else have any regret stories about not getting in on Bitcoin when they should have?

    Samsung’s 4Q 2013 Profit Falls Below Expectations

Samsungs 4Q 2013 Profit Falls Below Expectations

Even if companies like Samsung dominate the global smartphone market, it doesn’t mean that its all smooth sailing for them. In order to please shareholders and investors, these companies strive to post positive quarterly fiscal results, but that’s not always possible. Samsung has announced that its 4Q 2013 operating profit is down 6 percent year-over-year as smartphone sales slowed down in developed countries.

In its earnings preview, the company estimates that it will have raked in an operating profit of 8.3 trillion won or $7.8 billion in the last three months of 2013, thus falling under analysts’ expectations and also registering an 18 percent drop as compared to the previous quarter. According to analysts, higher marketing costs have been eating into Samsung’s operating costs as it tries to ramp up demand for its products in established markets. Samsung is actually believed to spend the most on marketing, well into the billions. The company did not go into much detail in the earnings preview, but it will paint a much more broader picture about earnings as well as net profit later this month. In the new year, Samsung is expected to focus more on tablets as well as low-end smartphones. Apparently it expects to sell as many as 330 million smartphones in 2014.

New Poll: Do You Use Inline Search Suggestions?

This article was written on July 12, 2007 by CyberNet.

Like Google, Yahoo wants to offer inline search suggestions to you while you’re performing a search. “Google Suggest” as it’s called, was introduced as a lab project while Yahoo’s new addition is called “Search Suggest.” The idea behind both is that your searching experience will be faster and you’ll find what you’re looking for quicker with the help of their suggestions.

By default, Yahoo’s Search Suggest will be enabled. A second or two after you start typing your query, Yahoo will display suggestions. If by chance you don’t like it, you can disable it by clicking “more” and then clicking “disable search suggestions.”

    Yahoo search suggest

Google Blogoscoped has a nice comparison of what Google returns versus what Yahoo returns. You’d think that the suggestions would be similar, however some of them are actually quite different. By typing “paris,” you get the obvious first suggestion of “paris hilton” from both Google and Yahoo, but the additional results from Google tend to be more relevant while the Yahoo suggestions weren’t. Yahoo’s suggestions always take a bit longer to start appearing as well.

    New Poll

Now that both Google and Yahoo offer search suggestions, do/will you use them? Usually if I’m performing a search, I know exactly what I’m wanting to search for, so the suggestions are useless. I remember trying out Google’s Suggest feature when it first launched, and I must admit, I’m not a fan.

So with that, Do you use inline search suggestions?

    • Yes, I Use Google’s.
    • Yes, I will use Yahoo’s.
    • No, they are useless to me!

    Corning Antimicrobial Glass Announced

Corning Antimicrobial Glass AnnouncedLet’s face it, our hands are not clean, neither are our faces, especially when you’re out all day either at work or school, and there are only so many times we can wash our hands on a daily basis. Even then there’s no stopping friends, family members, or strangers with grubby hands to grab at your smartphone, ultimately “soiling” its display with germs and bacteria. It does sound pretty gross but it is a common occurrence and not something we give much thought, but if you’re really particular about cleanliness, you might be interested to learn that Corning has announced what they are calling the world’s first antimicrobial cover glass.

According to Corning’s SVP and General Manger, James R. Steiner, “Corning’s Antimicrobial Gorilla Glass inhibits the growth of algae, mold, mildew, fungi, and bacteria because of its built-in antimicrobial property, which is intrinsic to the glass and effective for the lifetime of a device.” This helps Corning stand out from the competition whereby other antimicrobial wipes/films tend to degrade over time, versus Corning’s solution which seems more permanent. Corning expects that their new glass can be installed in a variety of products, such as computers, cellphones, telephones, display panels, and even calculators.

It sounds like a pretty cool piece of technology and we can’t wait to see which company will be the first to implement it into their products. Corning’s antimicrobial glass announcement was made shortly after the company announced their 3D Gorilla Glass which many have speculated could make its way into Apple’s rumored iWatch.

Intel’s RealSense Technology Allows For Better Interaction With Computers

Intels RealSense Technology Allows For Better Interaction With Computers[CES 2014] Ever wanted to control your computer using gestures, such as making swiping motions in the air to ALT-TAB between windows, browsing, exiting programs, and such? Well perhaps Intel will be the one to bring such technology to our computers in the future, thanks to the company recently announcing what they’re calling RealSense, which is basically a camera-like technology that will be able to detect gestures, facial recognition, facial features to better understand human movement and emotions, and even finger level movements as well.

Intel’s RealSense technology will also be able to better understand foregrounds and backgrounds, allowing for the creation of better augmented reality, as well as the ability to scan items in 3D. The good news is that Intel will be bringing their RealSense technology to future Intel-powered products, such as Ultrabooks, notebooks, and all-in-one desktop systems come the second-half of 2014. Intel has also announced that their partners, such as Acer, ASUS, Dell, Fujitsu, HP, Lenovo, and NEC will be on board with this new RealSense technology.

Some examples of the use of RealSense technology include better Skype calls, where the background of the caller can actually be removed, thus providing a more focused experience, and could also come in handy for those who work at home and want to look more professional. There will also be educational software for children that takes advantage of gestures to allow children to interact with it as well.

    Netgear Trek N300 Travel Router

Netgear Trek N300 Travel Router[CES 2014] The Trek N300 is another travel router that looks pretty interesting: first of all, it can share public WiFi HotSpots to all your devices, so that may beat your older travel router, but it also has a flip-out antenna that supposedly makes the reception better. It’s impossible to tell without running some tests in the real world, but I just think that it looks cool. (more…)

Corning Develops “3D” Version Of Its Gorilla Glass, Fuels iWatch Rumors

Corning Develops 3D Version Of Its Gorilla Glass, Fuels iWatch RumorsCorning is a company that is known for its Gorilla Glass series of screens that are supposedly extremely resistant to scratches and cracks. They have supplied these screens to numerous smartphone manufacturers in the past, and it now it looks like the company might have something new for OEMs in the future that comes in the form of a 3D-shaped version of Gorilla Glass, as announced by Corning a few days ago. What’s 3D-shaped Gorilla Glass, you ask? Well it’s basically glass that is curved in a more pronounced way, which we guess you could liken to devices such as the Samsung Galaxy Round or the LG G Flex.

According to Corning, “More than half of the top 10 smartphone manufacturers already market devices that incorporate cover glass with subtle curves, and the demand for even more-dramatic form factors is increasing. Corning’s 3D-forming technology meets this demand and expands the design possibilities for industrial designers.” This seems to suggest that companies in the future who might want to create more dramatically curved devices will not have to forgo durability afforded by Corning’s products for something else that is more pliable. Of course as it stands only Samsung and LG have devices that are curved, but according to speculation, some believe that this could be Apple’s answer to a curved display which might be used in their rumored iWatch.

Assuming this is true, it will not be Apple’s first foray into curved displays. In fact older models of the iPod nano (specifically the 2009 model) did feature a subtly curved display. We’re not sure what will result from this but hopefully Apple’s iWatch will be able to show off Corning’s efforts.

New Microsoft CEO Candidates Are Reportedly Worried About Gates And Ballmer’s Influence

New Microsoft CEO Candidates Are Reportedly Worried About Gates And Ballmers Influence

It has nearly been four months since Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer announced that he is going to step down within 12 months. A special committee of Microsoft’s board is actively working to hire a replacement. A number of internal and external candidates are believed to be favorites but so far no official announcement has been made. According to unnamed sources who spoke with The Wall Street Journal, potential candidates are apparently worried about the influence of Bill Gates and Steve Ballmer, who remain on the company’s board.

Both Gates and Ballmer are without a doubt influential figures at Microsoft. Apart from the fact that they’re the only two CEOs that the company has ever had, Gates is also the co-founder of this behemoth whereas Ballmer will retain his seat on the board despite stepping down as CEO. The Journal’s sources claim that some candidates are “particularly uneasy” about Ballmer based on some of his decisions that have generated controversy between managers and investors and even “altered the company’s strategy.” Potential candidates for the top job include Ford CEO Alan Mulally and Nokia CEO Stephen Elop, who will return to Microsoft after its acquisition of Nokia’s devices and services division is closed later this year. The board is reportedly looking for a turnaround expert, which is why most rumors point to Mulally as the possible successor to Steve Ballmer.
