Digg Finally Launches Dedicated Images Section

This article was written on December 04, 2007 by CyberNet.

It seems as though the one thing Digg users have requested over and over again, and the one thing that Digg has promised was coming is a dedicated images section.  It finally went live last night which means if users come across a funny or interesting image they think is Digg worthy, they can submit it and a thumbnail of the image will appear aside the submission so that users can get a preview of it before clicking through to the original source.

The nicest thing about the new images section is the image crawler. When a user goes to submit both news submissions and image submissions, Digg will crawl the site looking for images.  Then they’ll display the images available as thumbnails, and the user can select the image they’d like to use for the submission.  As mentioned, this works with news submissions as well.  Say you were to submit an article from CyberNet and the article had multiple images.  Digg would crawl the page and then pull up all of the available images and thumbnails, and then you’d select which image would work best.

Also on the list of changes was the addition of two new categories. We all know that Digg changed their focus from catering to geeks to catering to everybody a while ago, but now this is even more evident.  The two new categories include “Lifestyle” and “Offbeat.” According to Kevin Rose, the Lifestyle category will include your casual topics like cars, food and drink, and travel. Even though there are more non-tech related categories, I think it’s safe to say that it’s the geeks and technology enthusiasts who are most passionate about the site.

Next up for Digg? Yet another new comments system…

Canadian Company Builds A Truck Made Out Of Ice (And It Works!)

So the other day we reported on a car built out of LEGO parts that actually worked, which we have to admit is pretty damn cool, and speaking of cool, how about a truck completely made out of ice? Well maybe not completely as the wheels and engine are still the same, but the top part of the truck’s chassis is built from ice blocks that have been cut and sculpted to resemble a truck! The details and shape alone would have made it pretty awesome as a ice sculpture but the fact that it works and actually runs makes it even cooler! The video was put together by a Canadian company boasting about its battery which remains operable even in extreme temperatures, and what better way to test it out then sticking it in a truck made of ice, right? 3D Printing Service Uses Your Kinect To Make Mini Figurines Of Yourself

Some might think it is narcissistic to make a figurine of oneself, but one the other hand it would make a great gift to your significant other, or maybe even your parents who might want to remember you in 3D-likeness if you were to go overseas for work or studies. Well if you’ve always wanted to do something like that and you have a Kinect device at home, well you can do that thanks to shapify.me’s website. The website basically takes advantage of the Kinect’s 3D scanning technology to help develop a 3D figurine of yourself and will print it out in 3D.

In fact if you don’t want to scan yourself, shapify.me states that users are free to scan any object that is able to maintain a pose and a facial expression, but has warned against scanning transparent, shiny, or glossy surfaces, which we reckon might give the Kinect’s scanning abilities a hard time, not to mention could mess up the final printout which could be distorted. In order to make use of their website, it requires that users have audio speakers, a USB 2.0 connection, an internet connection, a Kinect for the Xbox or Windows. As for how much it costs, the company has estimated it should cost $59 for a 7-10cm 3D printout of the scan. If you’d like to learn more, hit up its website for more details! Alternatively you can check out the video above for more details as well.

ATM Hack Uses USB Drives To Steal Money

ATM Hack Uses USB Drives To Steal MoneyWe have all seen the warnings on ATMs in which banks advise their customers to avoid using the machine if it looks like it might have been tampered with. After all with 3D printers creating ATM skimmers with relative ease, anyone not aware could be easily fooled and could lose their life savings in one fell swoop. Now it seems that instead of relying on ATM skimmers, hackers have managed to use USB drives in order to steal from unknowing customers. This is done by thieves cutting a hole into ATMs that allows them to plug in a USB drive that then installs code into the ATMs which then allows them to steal from it.

This was discovered when a lender discovered its ATMs were being emptied out despite the use of safes to help protect the cash inside. The findings of this hack was presented at the Chaos Computing Congress, although its presenters asked not to have their names published. As it stands this hack appears to be limited to European banks but there’s no telling if the hack has managed to make its way stateside or to other banks around the world. Interestingly enough the researchers have indicated that there might no be honor among thieves because in order to release the money, separate codes had to be used, discouraging thieves from the gang to go solo or rip one another off.

Netflix Testing New Subscription Service At $6.99 A Month

Netflix Testing New Subscription Service At $6.99 A MonthAt the moment Netflix’s basic subscription is set at $7.99 that allows you to watch programs from its service on two screens, either in high definition or standard definition. $7.99 is admittedly not much to pay but at the same time we suppose for some individuals or families, it is considered to be a luxury. Well the good news is that Netflix is looking to offer even cheaper subscription fees at $6.99, a good $1 cheaper than its current offering but the only difference is that instead of allowing high definition viewing, the new offering will only allow viewers to enjoy their shows in standard definition.

For those who don’t own high definition televisions or really can’t be fussed about those sorts of things, we suppose saving a dollar ain’t too bad. As it stands, Netflix stated that this new service is currently in testing and will only be offered to select customers for now before the company plans on making it available to a wider audience. According to The Verge, they claim that this subscription plan can be found after signing up for one month of free streaming, after which the option will be made available to you. What do you guys think of this newer and cheaper service from Netflix? Is the price difference between $7.99 and $6.99 going to help make customers hop on board the Netflix bandwagon if they haven’t joined already?

Photo Realistic Painting Of Santa Claus Done On Microsoft Paint

A while back we reported on an ultra realistic painting of Morgan Freeman that was done with an iPad app. In fact it was so real that many of you guys were convinced it was a hoax. Well if you still don’t believe that an iPad app could have done that, perhaps you might be even more blown away by this time lapse video in which it shows how an extremely photo realistic painting of Santa Claus was done entirely on Microsoft Paint! Yes, the same Paint software that is used to make stick figures, doodles, and otherwise “bad” pieces of art, has managed to create a masterpiece. Of course this did not happen overnight. In fact the video has been condensed from a little over 50 hours worth of footage because that’s how long it took to make it happen.

Is this entirely possible? Well I’m no artist myself so I can’t speak for technique, but software such as Paint, Photoshop, and other image editing programs are tools to help transfer ideas from the artist’s mind onto canvas. Well, a digital canvas anyway, so if an artist was familiar enough with the concept of shading, lines, and knew enough to manipulate a program, we don’t see why this image could not be the result of such an effort. In any case if you have a few minutes to spare, this is definitely a video worth checking out and one worthy to end 2013 with. What do you guys think?

Nail Polish Can Be Used To Tell If Your Computer Has Been Tampered With

Nail Polish Can Be Used To Tell If Your Computer Has Been Tampered WithWhether you have sensitive information on your laptop or if you’re just simply a private person, having your laptop tampered with either by a nosey sibling or by a corporate spy is a big no-no on your list, and while there are ways for you to check if your computer has been messed around with, it seems that one cheap and reportedly effective way to do so is through the use of nail polish! This is according to security researchers, Eric Michaud and Ryan Lackey, both of whom gave a presentation at the Chaos Communication Congress (the same event in which Jacob Appelbaum presented his NSA findings as well) where they revealed that nail polish, along with a host of other cheap methods, could be used to see if your computer has been tampered with.

While there are seals that one could use, they claim that these seals can be easily broken, not to mention if one takes their time, could replace it with a new seal in almost the same same spot, leaving you to think none the wiser. The idea behind nail polish is to create what seems like a random pattern which makes it harder for the tamperer to replicate. The use of glitter nail polish is similar to what astronomers use to detect changes in the night sky, called blink comparison. Because each application of nail polish seemingly creates a random pattern in the glitter, it would be almost impossible for the tamperer to reapply it in exactly the same way.

Of course once the device has been tampered with, and with data possibly stolen or malware installed, it might be too late, but at the very least you know that it has been messed with and you can take the appropriate action, as opposed to finding out at the last minute.

The NSA Has A Device That Can Supposedly Hack Your WiFi From 8 Miles Away

Think that putting a password on your WiFi network will keep away pesky leechers and hackers? Think again. Speaking at the Chaos Communications Congress, security researcher Jacob Appelbaum revealed that the NSA had a device that is able to hack your WiFi from as far as 8 miles away! In fact Appelbaum speculates that the exploits used to hack your WiFi could even be delivered by drone, but concluded that it would be simpler and possibly more discreet to use an unmarked van parked at the side of the road.

For those unfamiliar, Appelbaum is the author of the Der Spiegel article that first revealed the NSA’s catalog. While the catalog in question dates back to 2007, Appelbaum believes that these tactics are still being employed by the NSA, if they haven’t been improved upon and advanced over the years already. One of the examples that he gave was how Julian Assange’s home at the Ecuadorian Embassy received welcome messages from a Ugandan telephone company, where the messages were later found to have originated from a foreign base station device installed on the roof, and that whoever owned it had forgotten to format the device which might have been used during an operation in Uganda.

If you’d like to learn more about the hack and some of the NSA’s catalog in general, you can check out the video above in which Appelbaum delivers his findings. It’s pretty long at over an hour but definitely worth taking a look at.

German Court Hands Down Patent Injunction Against All HTC Android Devices

German Court Hands Down Patent Injunction Against All HTC Android Devices

Nokia has been taking on HTC for patent infringement in a number of countries. It was able to get an injunction against the Taiwanese manufacturer in the UK and even went after the company in France as well as Germany. Last week it won an injunction against HTC in Germany which covers all Android devices that use USB ports for connecting to a PC, though HTC had the option to appeal. A similar country-wide injunction has been handed down today which also includes all Android devices made by HTC.

The Munich I Regional Court found that the company’s Android devices infringe on Nokia’s EP1148681 patent titled “method for transferring resource information,” as the devices let users connect two HTC devices over Bluetooth or NFC and transfer resource information, such as a URL. If Nokia wants to enforce this injunction it has to post a $550 million bond, which would mean that HTC devices will be taken off the shelves in Germany and recalled from commercial users. The court requires that the bond be submitted before the injunction is enforced so that in case HTC appeals and wins in the appeals court and then demands compensation for wrongful enforcement, the money already resides with the court.

Eric Schmidt Makes Predictions About 2014

Eric Schmidt Makes Predictions About 2014

Google chairman Eric Schmidt likes to talk about the future. Just read the book he co-wrote with Jared Cohen, titled The New Digital Age. It details how modern technology will be used in the years to come and the theories certainly make for an interesting read. He now makes predictions about 2014 and believes that “everyone is going to have a smartphone.” Schmidt says that the trend has been that mobile computing was winning, “it’s now won,” he says, in a video interview conducted by Bloomberg TV.

He also talks about “big data and machine intelligence,” which will drive a new crop of services and apps, allowing people to do so much more than they are able to do today. Schmidt is also of the view that data has the capability to change businesses around the globe. According to him the biggest disruptions expected next year are going to be in the field of genetics, “we don’t really know what’s going to happen,” says the Google chairman. These disruptions would give away to new discoveries in diagnostics and treatment of cancer in the coming year, which he calls unfathomably important. In the end Schmidt talks about social networking and believes it will continue to rise in the coming year, he calls not anticipating the rise of social networking phenomenon his “biggest mistake,” one that they’re not going to make again.
