Infamous media giant Walt Disney has announced that effective immediately, it has elected Twitter chairman and Square CEO Jack Dorsey as an independent director on its board. The seat Dorsey occupies now once belonged to a former chief technology officer of Cisco, Judith L. Estrin, who served on Disney’s board for 15 years, the maximum number of years for which one member can occupy the seat. Dorsey will stand for election when Walt Disney’s board meets for its annual meeting on March 18, next year.

Disney chairman and chief executive officer Robert A. Iger said that Jack Dorsey happens to be a “talented entrepreneur” and that the prespective he brings to the company’s board is extremely valuable, given the fact that Disney’s strategic priorities include making use of the latest technologies to better reach out to its customers. Dorsey is well known for his role at Twitter, which included posting the world’s first tweet back in March 2006. Until 2008, he was the president and CEO of Twitter, before becoming the chairman. He has also spearheaded the development and growth of Square, a popular commerce company founded in 2009. In a statement, Dorsey said that he is “honored and humbled” to join the “timeliness” company’s board.

Bitcoins Digitally Stolen Shortly After Being Shown On TV

Bitcoins Digitally Stolen Shortly After Being Shown On TVThe digital currency Bitcoin has been making the news recently, because it hit an all-time high of $1000 per Bitcoin recently, only to plunge below $500 after China and other governments have expressed the desire to hinder, control or oppose digital currencies. Yet, Bitcoin is a great discussion topic and a TV anchor wanted to give away $20 worth of Bitcoins during a TV show. The currency is represented by a long sequence of numbers, which is seen here in the form of a QR-code (a 2D  barcode). (more…)

BlackBerry Live 2014 Bites The Dust

BlackBerry Live 2014 Bites The Dust

Most major OEMs host their annual conferences which are attended by a wide variety of people, including developers, analysts, journalists and more. Apple hosts the Worldwide Developers Conference whereas Google hosts the I/O every year. BlackBerry, the once iconic Canadian smartphone manufacturer, has hosted its own annual event since 2012 under different monikers, most recently under the BlackBerry Live branding. The company has confirmed that it will not host BlackBerry Live 2014. Instead, BlackBerry says, it will continue to host smaller and targeted events in various regions around the world next year.

The decision to cancel BlackBerry Live 2014 certainly deals a blow to the company’s device plans. They have always served as the perfect platforms for building hype about an upcoming device. It goes without saying that the company has suffered monumental losses due to deteriorating performance of its hardware division. It also clears the air about the direction that BlackBerry is going to take under new CEO John Chen, which seems to be moving away from devices and focusing on its core strengths that lie in security and enterprise solutions. BlackBerry isn’t shutting down its hardware division immediately, it probably can’t afford to right now, but it has made some changes. Foxconn has been brought onboard as partner for developing low-end devices, whereas the folks back at Waterloo are going to focus exclusively on high-end devices that are favored by its loyal user base as well as enterprise customers.

Stolen Target Credit Cards Start Appearing In The Black Market For $20-$100

Stolen Target Credit Cards Start Appearing In The Black Market For $20 $100The other day we reported that retailer Target had experienced a security breach in which they had a lot of their customers’ credit/debit card numbers stolen, 40 million to be exact. Now according to reports, it seems that the stolen credit cards have surfaced in the black market where they are currently being sold from anywhere between $20 to $100 per card. According to cybersecurity firm, Easy Solutions, they have noticed that the stolen credit card market has increased anywhere between 10 to 20 times than normal, with the credit cards ranging from pretty much nearly every bank and credit union.

While in theory if the thieves could get ahold of the customer’s PIN, they would be able to withdraw money from their accounts, but Target’s CEO has stated that at the moment there is no indication that the PIN numbers have been compromised. Target expects to notify all their affected customers over the weekend but we’re sure with the news making its rounds, and judging the response on Target’s Facebook page, many are well aware of this. In any case if you are one of the affected customers, we guess we don’t have to tell you to call your bank and request for a new card, not to mention changing your PIN would probably be a great idea as well.

NSA Reportedly Paid Software Encryption $10m To Make Their Software More Vulnerable

NSA Reportedly Paid Software Encryption $10m To Make Their Software More VulnerableAt the moment the NSA is getting a lot of flak from people all over the world, not just US citizens, over its spying program that was revealed by whistleblower Edward Snowden. Not only did we find out that the NSA is spying on its own citizens, but now according to the latest reports, it seems that one of the reasons the NSA is able to gather data is because they could have been paying off security firms to insert code into their software that would make it easier for the NSA to access. This is the latest accusation in which it claims that the NSA paid off security company, RSA, about $10 million to sell encryption software that would be vulnerable to surveillance.

While this has been suspected before and mentioned by Snowden, this report by Reuters would make it the first where an actual company has been named, along with possible monetary compensation at the same time. RSA claims that they were unaware of the NSA’s backdoor capabilities, with the company releasing a statement that says, “RSA always acts in the best interest of its customers and under no circumstances does RSA design or enable any back doors in our products […] Decisions about the features and functionality of RSA products are our own.” It was recently that the top executives from tech companies such as Apple, Google, and Yahoo met with President Obama to discuss NSA reforms.

T-Mobile Uncarrier 4.0 Announcement Will Be Made At CES 2014

T Mobile Uncarrier 4.0 Announcement Will Be Made At CES 2014

Magenta has started making waves again. A few days back T-Mobile CEO tweeted that the carrier is going to remove another customer “pain point,” he didn’t offer much details except that we should wait for T-Mobile’s uncarrier 4.0 announcement. Invitations have been sent out to the media, T-Mobile is going to make its hyped announcement at the Consumer Electronics Show 2014 in Las Vegas, next month. The media event has been planned for Wednesday, January 8th.

T-Mobile started off with its string of uncarrier announcements earlier this year, the first eliminated traditional two year service contracts on the carrier as well as device subsidies. The carrier also unveiled its Jump! program which lets subscribers upgrade their devices without worrying about eligibility. Only recently T-Mobile announced that it will offer unlimited global data roaming at 2G speeds with no extra cost. As per recent rumors, the uncarrier 4.0 announcement might be related to covering ETF or early termination fees for new subscribers that are switching from other carriers while their contracts are not yet up. Since these subscribers will be charged early termination fees by their carriers, T-Mobile would apparently cover that so these subscribers don’t have to pay a hefty fee just because they want to switch. There’s no confirmation of this as yet, so just wait until January 8th to find out what’s next from T-Mobile.

Sprint Chairman Approaching Banks To Secure Funding For T-Mobile Acquisition

Sprint Chairman Approaching Banks To Secure Funding For T Mobile Acquisition

It was rumored recently that Sprint is interested in acquiring T-Mobile, having Magenta’s user base and infrastructure onboard would allow Sprint to launch a much more effective competition against rivals Verizon and AT&T. While AT&T pursued its own buyout bid for T-Mobile, it could get through due to regulatory concerns. It remains to be seen how far Sprint is able to go in this rumored bid for T-Mobile, but apparently its Chairman, who also happens to be the CEO of Softbank which purchased Sprint, is meeting to banks to advise and finance the T-Mobile acquisition.

Masayoshi Son, the gentleman we’re talking about in this article, has discussed financing with banks like Mizuho, Goldman Sachs, Deutsche Bank, JPMorgan Chase and Credit Suisse Group, people “familiar with the matter” tell Bloomberg. These are the very same financial institutions that advised and financed SoftBank’s buyout of Sprint. Apparently the chairman and CEO is looking to raise $20 billion, and take control of T-Mobile by paying cash for the 67 percent stake in Magenta that’s owned by Deutsche Telekom. According to the report, while Deutsche Telekom and Sprint haven’t sat down as yet, apparently the former is willing to sell its stake for around $16 billion. According to the sources, discussions with the banks are in initial stages, but so far it appears that financing is available for this deal.

Temperfect Mug Will Keep Your Coffee/Tea At The Perfect Temperature

Temperfect Mug Will Keep Your Coffee/Tea At The Perfect TemperatureWhen it comes to the perfect cup of coffee, the temperature cannot be too hot otherwise it would be impossible to drink, and neither can it be too cold because then it’s kind of gross, but unfortunately coffee will get cold, and at times you will get a barista who unfortunately does not know what they are doing when they overheat the milk. Well if you think you know how to brew the perfect cup or know a barista who does a great job, and you would like to prevent your perfect cup of coffee from getting cold too fast, this is a Kickstarter project worth checking out.

Dubbed the Temperfect Mug, this is a mug that supposedly will bring coffee down to the perfect drinking temperature, and will apparently be able to keep it at said temperature for hours on end, and all of this is done is just 2 minutes. According to its creators, the secret to the Temperfect Mug is its insulation material which has the ability to now only draw out excess heat from the drink, but at the same time is able to transfer it back to the drink to maintain its temperature. To top things off, the mug does look pretty sleek and stylish.

It is a great idea for those who love their coffee or tea and want to enjoy it for hours without worrying about it becoming cold and disgusting. As it stands the creators of the Temperfect Mug has managed to raise over $181,000, far exceeding its initial goal of $23,500, so for more information, hit up its Kickstarter page for the details!

UK Web Archive Is Now Live

UK Web Archive Is Now LiveWell, well, what do we have here? Apparently, a major archive of British websites is now live and kicking, but it has yet to be online. This particular project can be accessed only in person assuming you plant your backside in one of the British Isles’ six biggest libraries, where there will be corresponding terminals in those libraries to help you out. This particular effort is made possible after 10 years of legal wrangling between the British Library and publishers. No thanks to the restrictions which were imposed by the Legal Deposit Libraries Act 2003, this translates to the fact that the archive can only be accessed as long as you are physically in library reading rooms.

The British Library, however, offers a glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel, touting that there has been some “discussions into the possibility that the Act might be changed in future so that the archived copies of websites might be made available via the web. Making archived copies of material available online, and also allowing it to be indexed by search engines, could potentially affect the volume of web user traffic to the rights owner’s live website and harm their business model.” This project, first launched in April this year, will comprise of the whole UK web domain, and this includes blogs, public tweets and Facebook pages.

Chuck Norris’ Epic Split On Two Jets Outdo Van Damme

I am quite sure that many folks were awed when they saw how Jean-Claude Van Damme managed to perform a split for a Volvo ad, showing just how tough and yet versatile and agile he still is at his age. Having said that, there could only be one other person who could be able to top that, and it would be none other that the legendary Chuck Norris. In the video above, Chuck himself was seen performing a split nonchalantly on the tips of the wings of two fighter jets, in addition to carrying up to 11 soldiers on his shoulders (who formed a pyramid and carried some sort of LED lights to represent a Christmas tree, I suppose) without breaking a sweat – at that crazy altitude, too.

It will surely add more credence and weight to the ever expanding Chuck Norris facts list, although humanly speaking, this feat is impossible – which is why it is none other than Chuck Norris who starred in the video, enlisting some CGI help along the way, of course. The holiday video hails from Hungarian animation firm Delov Digital, and it remains to be seen whether Norris worked directly with Delov in this matter. It is nice to have some laughter after a particularly long day at work.
