Verizon Could Announce Intel’s TV Service Acquisition Next Week

Verizon Could Announce Intels TV Service Acquisition Next Week

It has been rumored multiple times in the past that Verizon is interested in acquiring Intel’s TV service that failed to take off. While there has reportedly been interest from other suitors as well, Verizon’s name has popped up time and again, it is certainly believed that Big Red is committed to picking up the service. Citing people familiar with the discussions, Bloomberg reports that Verizon could announce the deal to purchase Intel’s internet based TV service as soon as next week.

Intel worked on the service, called OnCue, for quite some time before deciding to give up on investing in it and releasing the service on its own. Since early this year, the company is said to have been looking for a buyer. Final details of the deal between Verizon and Intel have reportedly been hammered out, which is why it is believed that an announcement could be made next week. Verizon will then be able to use OnCue to extend its existing pay TV service beyond FiOS. It hasn’t been revealed just how much Big Red is going to pony up for OnCue, but according to previous rumors, Intel was asking for as much as $500 million. Spokespersons for both Intel and Verizon have declined to comment on this report, which means that we now have to wait until next week to be absolutely sure about OnCue’s future.

Sprint Wants To Buy T-Mobile [Rumor]

Sprint Wants To Buy T Mobile [Rumor]

Right now there are four major mobile carriers in the U.S., Verizon, AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile. When AT&T’s bid to acquire T-Mobile ultimately fell through, nobody thought that another major carrier would immediately move to pick up the fourth largest U.S. carrier. Given that considerable time has passed since that failed attempt, a new report by The Wall Street Journal claims that Sprint is gearing up to bid for T-Mobile U.S. If it goes through, rather if regulators let it go through, the U.S. market will effectively be left with three major carriers.

It is reported that Sprint is likely to make an offer in the first half of 2014, the offer is likely to be to the tune of $20 billion. Sprint’s bid is almost half of what AT&T offered back in 2011, around $39 billion. There’s an obvious advantage here for Sprint to consider this bid. Bringing T-Mobile’s subscriber base and infrastructure on board will enable Sprint to launch much more effective competition against behemoths like Verizon and AT&T. Both Sprint and T-Mobile’s subscriber bases account for less than what AT&T holds, roughly 109 million. The question remains though, is Sprint going to face regulatory hurdles that might make it impossible to pursue this any further? That remains to be seen. There has been no official comment from either Sprint or T-Mobile confirming if talks are under way. So before a bid is officially made, we must hold on to those grains of salt.

Yahoo Mail Was Down Due To A Hardware Problem

Yahoo Mail Was Down Due To A Hardware Problem

Over the past few days a number of Yahoo Mail users have complained about not being able to access the email service. The company didn’t say anything, so it wasn’t known for sure exactly what was causing the problem. Yahoo has finally acknowledged that something is indeed wrong, and it apologizes for recent difficulties that users have been facing with Yahoo Mail. The company revealed that the downtime was caused by a hardware problem in one of its mail data centers, and that the problem turned out to be harder to fix than Yahoo originally expected.

Yahoo says that it has “dozens of people” working around the clock to get the service fully up and running again. It is keeping customers up to date through the Yahoo Mail Twitter account. So far, POP mail access has been restored, it is still working on restoring IMAP. Best way to access Yahoo Mail on a mobile device right now is through a Yahoo Mail app, available only for iOS and Android. The company says that affected servers have been able to deliver over 30 percent of the emails that were sent during the outage. It also says that some people might still be facing issues, and reassures that it won’t rest until the problem is fixed once and for all.

Remaining UK Blockbuster Stores To Shut Down

Remaining UK Blockbuster Stores To Shut DownWhen it comes to Blockbuster Video in the US, it is more or less a goner – although there was still some hope left that the UK brand of Blockbuster might see some light at the end of a particularly long tunnel. I guess it was rather too optimistic to see things that way, as there was an announcement which got out earlier today, touting that the remaining 91 stores in the UK will need to shut down by December 16th, which would mean a less than merry Christmas for 808 folks who would be out of a job then.

One of the main reasons Blockbuster’s online business came to a grinding halt was because it failed to compete toe-to-toe with the likes of Netflix and Amazon’s Lovefilm, and Blockbuster’s UK administrators are keeping their fingers crossed that they will be able to find a buyer who is willing to bail the company out – before arriving at the decision to shut down the remaining Blockbuster stores. In order to make sure that the stores have literally nothing left at the closure, expect all remaining stock to see a discount of up to 90%. What are some of the other more notable businesses that you can think of which have shuttered their physical doors and windows (or are struggling) because of increased competition in the virtual space?

Ex-Napster Executive Killed In Cycling Accident Involving Police Car

Ex Napster Executive Killed In Cycling Accident Involving Police CarA former executive of Napster, Milton Everett Olin Jr., met with a tragic accident on Sunday after he was hit by a police car while he was on his bicycle, ending his life at that very instant itself. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s department reported that the 65 year old Everett was cycling in the bike lane when he was hit by the unidentified deputy. Apparently, the policeman happened to be driving in the same direction that Everett was cycling in when the fateful accident happened on Mulholland Highway.

The Daily News reported that Olin ended up on the windshield, and the force of his landing managed to shatter the glass, before succumbing to his injuries later on. The driver, understandably, suffered from just minor injuries and was sent to a hospital later on for treatment. It remains to be seen just what the cause of the accident was. Another life cut short due to unforeseen circumstances. Don’t police cars have this special dashboard camera that records all that happens on the road in front of them? Is it so difficult to pull out such a recording and determine what the cause of the accident was, or is there something that is being covered up?

Mars One Intends To Launch Unmanned Mars Lander In 5 Years’ Time

Mars One Intends To Launch Unmanned Mars Lander In 5 Years’ TimeTo send man to the moon? Pffft, that was one of the great achievement of mankind in the 20th century, but the 21st century – we’re looking farther and farther away. Enter Mars One, a privately-funded company that intends to send humans to colonize the Red Planet by the time 2025 rolls around. Such an undertaking is more or less a one way trip, but it has seen quite an enthusiastic response, with more than 200,000 people signing up already to date. Mars One, however, must have been disappointed with the numbers since they were looking forward to at least 2,000,000 applicants. Still, there is a different plan that is being prepared by Mars One, that is, to launch an unmanned lander to the surface of Mars by the time 2018 rolls around.

This unmanned lander will be working in tandem with a geostationary satellite, where it will be able to provide the public with a live feed from the surface of Mars. It will take several years after that for the colonists to arrive if all goes well, such a live connection would be able to show those of us on earth just how life on Mars would be like. Another reality show that is set to experience high ratings, except that it will be a setting that takes place far, far away from the comforts of our living room.

National Library Of Norway To Digitize Its Entire Collection Of Books And Materials

National Library Of Norway To Digitize Its Entire Collection Of Books And MaterialsPersonally I find books nicer and more comfortable to read in its traditional format, but I suppose for the sake of convenience and also for the sake of saving paper, going the digital route is understandable. If you’re a fan of digital books and/or magazines, you might be interested to learn that just like the UK and Finland, Norway has undertaken efforts to begin digitizing its entire library collection, an effort which is expected to take 20 to 30 years to complete.

By doing so, the National Library of Norway will be able to make all sorts of books in its collection searchable and available to read online. The books will range from more recent titles, to even materials that dates back to the Middle Ages, which we reckon will probably need to be handled with the utmost care, which is why it’s a good thing that it will be getting a digital backup as well. The library currently owns equipment which will allow for this and will be adding metadata and storing it in a database that makes it easy for retrieval.

However there is one caveat and that is anyone from Norway, or with a Norway IP address, will be able to access said copyrighted material. The effort began in 2006 and is expected to be completed in the mid 20202s.

Circuit Scribe Lets You Draw Circuits

Circuit Scribe Lets You Draw CircuitsThere has been pretty interesting crowdfunding projects in the past, and here we are with another potential winner in the form of the Circuit Scribe. The Circuit Scribe resembles that of an average ballpoint pen, but it does a whole lot more than that as you can tell by the name of this unique Kickstarter project. There are three more weeks left in the Kickstarter campaign for the Circuit Scribe, and with half of the amount left to go, it ain’t too shabby as it could still meet the target in due time.

Jennifer Lewis, Brett Walker and Analisa Russo are the ones behind the Circuit Scribe, where it is meant to be a basic tool which would allow students to get a better idea on just what a circuit is all about, as well as how electronics would function. You could more or less say that the Circuit Scribe is a DIY electronic kit, where you can also pick up additional components to go along with it. In the future, we could be on the receiving end of resistor and insulator pens, with the team working on an educational portal for STEM students in order to maximize their Circuit Scribe pens. AmazonFresh Launched In San Francisco

    AmazonFresh Launched In San Francisco

We reported last week that it was possible for AmazonFresh to be launched in San Francisco on Tuesday, December 10th. Granted that the expected launch date didn’t hit the bullseye, but today Amazon finally expanded its grocery delivery service to San Francisco. This service was initially launched in Amazon’s home base Seattle, and six months after its initial launch, Los Angeles was added to the list. AmazonFresh is now live in three cities in the U.S., so its still quite far from becoming a mainstream service.

The service offers same-day delivery for items that are ordered by 10 a.m., any orders placed after that will be delivered in the following morning. Through AmazonFresh, customers can order fresh produce, dairy products, fish and even toys and electronics that are available in its warehouses. Initially customers will be given a 30-day free trial of the service, that doesn’t mean that they won’t be charged for groceries. After the trial is over, customers will be required to pay $299 annually to become a member of Prime Fresh, the membership also gets them Amazon Prime’s two-day free shipping benefits. Once again, paying the membership fees doesn’t mean that the price of the products you order will be waived, you will have to pay for what you purchase through the service, though it will be much easier to get groceries now if you live in San Francisco.
