Newsweek Changes Its Mind, Will Return To Print

Newsweek Changes Its Mind, Will Return To PrintWith everyone having access to internet these days, and with smartphones and tablets seeing a higher rate of adoption, it made sense for publications to start offering a digital copy of their newspapers or magazines alongside with print copies as well. Newsweek, however, had a different idea and back in 2012 announced that they would be ceasing its printed publication and offer digital-only copies instead, which debuted in January of 2013. However it seems that Newsweek has had a change of heart and has announced that they will be returning to print.

This was revealed by the publication’s editor-in-chief, Jim Impoco, who told The New York Times that they would be offering a 64-page weekly edition starting in either January or February of 2014. The publication is expected to rely heavily on subscribers rather than advertising, so if you are/were a Newsweek subscriber from before, expect your subscription fees to see an increase. According to Impoco, “It’s going to be a more subscription-based model, closer to what The Economist is compared to what Time magazine is […] We see it as a premium product, a boutique product.” By making the switch to digital, Newsweek reportedly managed to save $40 million a year, but we’re guessing with this new model, Newsweek expects it to be more profitable, so we guess we will have to wait and see.

New Prototype Spacesuit Powered By Body Heat

New Prototype Spacesuit Powered By Body HeatWearing a spacesuit is definitely no fun at all, especially if you are one who feels claustrophobic. Well, it seems that there is a new generation of spacesuits that are in the making, where engineers over at Kansas State University are hard at work, developing a prototype suit which is able to monitor an astronaut’s vital signs through the provision of power to integrated electronic components. The thing about this prototype spacesuit that makes it extra special is this – power is obtained from the astronaut’s body heat, now how about that for innovation?

The new prototype spacesuit happens to be a replica of the spacesuit that is used in the discontinued space shuttle program. Batteries happen to be too dangerous to use with spacesuits due to the amount of oxygen generated, so body heat is an ingenious method when it comes to an alternative energy source, don’t you think so? There will also be sensors embedded within that will measure just how one’s body changes when one is in space, and the data recorded include one’s pulse rate, blood oxygen levels, and respiration. Could such developments actually usher in a new era of space exploration? Perhaps this advancement might eventually see the light of day when humankind populate the Red Planet. [Press Release]

Hubble Locates Water On 5 Planets

Hubble Locates Water On 5 PlanetsThe Hubble Space Telescope has achieved new imaging techniques, and this has helped scientists to detect some tracers of water vapor across five different planets in our galaxy. Of course, having detected water on other planets does not automatically mean that life can be supported, since none of these five planets are able to support life according to our definition due to other numerous factors – the main one being these planets are made out of gas, and remain too close to their respective suns which does not allow them to sustain liquid water on their surfaces.

For the curious, these 5 planets are known as WASP-17b, HD209458b, WASP-12b, WASP-19b and XO-1b, where they remain tidally locked with their stars. This means the same side of the planet will face the star at all times, making it bombarded with a constant and powerful stream of solar radiation, which makes it extremely hot and hence, impossible for life that we know on earth to be able to exist in such an environment. If only there were some alien crop circles or something of the equivalent to give us a glimmer of hope that there is some intelligent life out there, or any form of life at all.

    HTC’s November Revenues Fall 27.1 Percent Year-Over-Year

HTCs November Revenues Fall 27.1 Percent Year Over Year

HTC hasn’t had a great year. The company finds itself in a precarious financial situation because the products it was counted on to succeed didn’t end up generating enough revenue. 2013 actually turned out to be the year in which HTC had its first quarterly loss in its entire history. Even though its revenues for the month of November 2013 met market expectations, up 3.2 percent sequentially, the US$522 million revenues HTC generated this month actually represent a 27.1 percent year-over year decrease.

The company generated roughly $6.5 billion in revenue during the first 11 months of this year, which amounts to a 28.6 percent decrease when compared to last year. The company has outlined its fourth quarter, it expects to ship 5.2 million smartphones and a 16.2 percent sequential drop in revenues. HTC says that its falling market share in U.S. and Europe is to blame for the revenue loss, apart from the fact that it failed to launch any major products apart from the HTC One Max in this particular quarter. HTC needs to seriously up its game if it looks to mount a strong challenge against rivals next year. The company’s co-founder and chairwoman Cher Wang has already said that marketing is one of the biggest challenges HTC faces. HTC would also want to iron out the patent litigation that led to a ban on HTC One Mini sales in the UK, with a similar ban looming for the HTC One, the company would want its flagship smartphone to keep selling in one of Europe’s most lucrative markets.

Huawei To Exit US Market Amidst Spy Allegations

Huawei To Exit US Market Amidst Spy AllegationsHuawei is a company known by many to produce a range of electronic devices, ranging from 3G/4G dongles to smartphones, just to name a few. However the Chinese company has come under fire earlier this year from the US government where they were accused of being security threats and possibly manufacturing spy equipment for China, which Huawei has since denied.

Well it looks like enough is enough as the Chinese company has decided to once and for all pull out from the US market. Speaking to French news website, Les Echos, Huawei’s CEO, Ren Zhengfei, had reportedly told the publication that they no longer want to stay in the US market. Ren stated that if the company gets between US and China relations, it could cause problems and that the trouble would not be worth it, thus leading to their decision to exit the US market and not stay in the middle of it. The Fanda: Crowdsourced Global Celebrity Stalking

The Fanda: Crowdsourced Global Celebrity StalkingWith the rise of social networking, there is a huge supply of content coming from “celebrities” of all kinds. A Korean startup called Lasso & Company is trying to capitalize on a global flavor of (healthy) celebrity stalking, by not only aggregating the social network updates of celebrities, but also asking the crowd to either translate the updates in their own languages, or vote on the available translations. By doing so, they open celeb’s reach to a potentially new worldwide audience, since updates are nearly always posted in the celebrity native language. TheFanda exists as a website, and also as an app. (more…)

U.S. DoJ Signs Off On Microsoft’s Acquisition Of Nokia’s Devices And Services Division

U.S. DoJ Signs Off On Microsofts Acquisition Of Nokias Devices And Services Division

A few months back Microsoft announced that it had agreed to purchase Nokia’s devices and services division for $7.17 billion. Even though both companies had agreed to the sale, Redmond still had a few hoops to jump through. At first there was the approval from Nokia’s shareholders, which was overwhelmingly in favor of the deal when voting was conducted last month. Then there’s the approval from the U.S. Department of Justice and the Federal Trade Commission, both of which have signed off on the deal. The DoJ has cleared the acquisition unconditionally, which means that Microsoft is one step closer to finishing the acquisition.

Since Nokia is a Finnish company, an acquisition of its division would require approval from regulators in the EU. Recent reports suggest that EU regulators are likely to sign off on the deal as well without imposing any conditions. Once the acquisition is completed and Microsoft ends up establishing base at Nokia House in Finland, the ex-Nokia CEO Stephen Elop will go back to Microsoft and head an expanded devices team which will include Windows Phone devices, Surface tablet and the Xbox console. Rumors have pegged him as a possible candidate for the top slot at Redmond, as CEO Steve Ballmer has already announced his plans to step down within the next 12 months.

BlackBerry CEO Gives Enterprise Customers Some Assurances In Latest Open Letter

BlackBerry CEO Gives Enterprise Customers Some Assurances In Latest Open Letter

Soon after BlackBerry completed the top management transition that came as a part and parcel of the $1 billion institutional investment led by Fairfax Financial Holdings, the company’s new CEO John S. Chen penned an open letter to customers telling them that BlackBerry has substantial financial resources to keep it afloat. Chen today wrote a letter to the company’s enterprise customers, without a doubt its backbone, assuring them that BlackBerry is “very much alive,” and that they shouldn’t pay much attention to rival mobile device management or MDM firms telling them to switch from BES because BlackBerry’s future is uncertain.

Chen writes that the company has taken off its “for sale” sign and is currently focusing on its roots, which includes handsets, EMM solutions, cross-platform messaging and embedded systems. He also mentions that BlackBerry’s EMM customer base is larger than any other vendor in the Gartner Magic Quadrant for Mobile Device Management and that it continues to grow, that its enterprise solutions manage more mobile devices than any other vendor and the fact that BlackBerry isn’t a small VC backed MDM company that needs additional funding every year. Chen says that the company knows that “BlackBerry devices are not for everyone,” and that its ok because BES10 supports multi-platform MDM, security and mobile application management so even if a company doesn’t deploy BlackBerry devices, it can use the company’s enterprise solutions to deploy iOS and Android devices. BlackBerry definitely needs to retain as many customers, both enterprise and individual as it can because its not going to be an easy road to recovery for the ailing Canadian manufacturer.
