Time Magazine’s 50 Best Websites of 2007

This article was written on July 11, 2007 by CyberNet.

I always love the “Best Website” lists because there’s usually a handful of sites that I haven’t heard of, or paid much attention to. Time magazine has put together their list of the 50 Best Websites of 2007. They explain it as their picks of “what’s new and exciting about the Web right now.”

You can get involved by taking their poll and ranking each of the sites on a scale of 1 to 100. After you’ve given the site a rating, it will display the average rating that it has received.

  2. Chow.com

  5. StumbleUpon.com (our coverage here)

While I haven’t heard of some of the listed sites, there are several well-known sites that we’ve covered like:

You can view the entire list of 50 websites here. Are there any that you don’t think belong on the list? On the other hand, is there a site that you think belongs? Let us know in the comments!

Oh, and just in case you’re interested, there’s also the Time Magazine’s list of the 5 Worst Websites. That list included e-Harmony, Evite, Meez, MySpace (no surprise here!), and SecondLife.

Top BlackBerry Executives Depart Company

Top BlackBerry Executives Depart Company

BlackBerry has a lot of work to do if it wants to turn its fortunes around. It took the first step by ousting former CEO Thorsten Heins and appointing turn-around legend John S. Chen as the interim CEO. Today, the company announced that it has made some changes in the management and board ranks. BlackBerry COO Kristian Tear is leaving the company, and so is its Chief Marketing Officer Frank Boulben.

BlackBerry’s Chief Financial Officer Brian Bidulka is now being replaced by James Yersh, who has worked at the company since 2008 as a senior vice president. Bidulka isn’t being shown the door immediately however, unlike Boulben and Tear, he will remain at the company as a special advisor to John Chen for the remainder of this fiscal year to assist with the company’s transition. In a statement, BlackBerry CEO John S. Chen once again reiterated his previous comments that the company is in it for the long-haul, and that it has a “strong cash position and continues, by a significant margin, to be the top provider of trusted and secure mobile device management solutions to enterprise customers.” It doesn’t come as a surprise that these executives have been relinquished of their roles at the company. During their tenure, BlackBerry has burned through its cash pile and aggressively lost marketshare around the world. For BlackBerry’s new direction, it seems like a logical move for Chen to surround himself with an almost entirely new top management team. BlackBerry also said that board member Roger Martin has resigned from the board.

Dropbox CEO Reveals Steve Jobs Wanted To Kill Off Their Service

Dropbox CEO Reveals Steve Jobs Wanted To Kill Off Their ServiceWe’re sure that there are plenty of users out there who use Dropbox, but for those who don’t, the service is a cloud storage service that lets you sync files and folders across multiple devices through its software that is available on a variety of platforms, including mobile. Of course there are a lot of new cloud storage services these days, such as Google Drive and Apple’s iCloud, but it seems that if Apple’s late co-founder, Steve Jobs, had his way, Dropbox might not be around.

According to Dropbox’s CEO, Drew Houston, in an interesting anecdote, he revealed that Steve Jobs had called him in for a meeting. It was unclear at first what Jobs wanted to do with Houston, but it was revealed that Jobs had told Houston he was unhappy at the fact that he couldn’t acquire Dropbox, and instead told him that if he could not have their company, he would be going after them with a competing product that would kill them off, and the result is iCloud. Safe to say iCloud did not manage to kill off Dropbox, which we’re sure many Dropbox users are thankful for, but what do you guys think? Would the Dropbox experience be very different had it been acquired by Apple?

Foxconn To Invest $40 Million In A Factory In Pennsylvania

Foxconn To Invest $40 Million In A Factory In PennsylvaniaIf you’re the type of consumer that worries about where their products come from and whether it is made under ethical conditions, such as no mistreatment of their workers, you might be interested to learn that manufacturer Foxconn will soon be opening up shop in the US. The company has revealed that they are looking to invest $40 million in a new factory in Pennsylvania, with $30 million going towards the factory itself, while the remaining $10 million will go towards R&D efforts at the Pittsburgh Carnegie Mellon University.

Foxconn manufactures for a lot of big companies, such as Apple and Sony, just to name a few. We’re not sure if Apple’s products will be transferred to Foxconn’s new factory in the US, but it seems that Foxconn is hopping aboard the bandwagon where a lot of companies are starting to shift their manufacturing efforts back to the US. We have seen how Apple will be bringing advanced sapphire manufacturing to the US, and will also see the new Mac Pro assembled in the US, as opposed to countries such as China or Brazil. Motorola has also shifted their efforts back to the US with the Moto X.

Foxconn has been under fire many times for alleged mistreatment of their workers, but hopefully with the shift to the US, where labor laws are stricter, they will be able to prove that they are able to operate under “normal” conditions as well.

Microsoft To Take Up Residence In Nokia House

Microsoft To Take Up Residence In Nokia House

Microsoft might have taken Nokia’s Devices and Services division as well as licensed some of its patents, it appears that the company will take up residence in Nokia House as well. The building housing Nokia’s headquarters in Espoo, Finland is known as Nokia House. Microsoft will move in by the end of March 2014. Since majority of Nokia’s employees at the House are involved in Devices and Services as well as other activities and support functions, Microsoft will simply take control of the site. Employees which aren’t going with the division sold to Microsoft will be relocated to another campus in Finland.

Employees working in Nokia management and support functions will be moved to Karaportii Midpoint, while some employees will be relocated to the Open Innovation House in Otaniemi, Espoo, Finland. Nokia’s headquarters for HERE and NSN, its location services and telecom equipment business respectively, will continue as normal. Nokia House has been an iconic structure in Espoo for a couple of decades now, the locals might feel sad to see that the company no longer lives there. Nokia owned the building at one point in time, but then sold it to an investment and management company called Exillion and leased Nokia House back from it.

    CyberNet Forum Gets an Update

This article was written on July 11, 2007 by CyberNet.

CyberNet ForumAs everyone has probably noticed by now, our blog got a nice update last week. We couldn’t let the forum go untouched, so late this weekend we launched a redesign of the forum that made it match our new site a lot better.

In the next day or two the forum will be hitting 8,000 posts from members located around the world. With the new redesign we also decided to enable guest posting once again, so if you see a topic that you want to respond to feel free to jump in without registering. However, if you register you’ll also be able to start your own topics, bypass the captcha, and surf the forum ad-free! You can participate without registering for an account, but in the end it will probably be easier if you do sign-up since it takes less than a minute.

So come on over and join us in the forum. As Ashley previously mentioned, there are several regular visitors that are always on the site, but we’re always looking for some fun conversations. We talk about and review movies, discuss our freeware finds, and for some reason we’re on the brink of obsession when it comes to remote controlled helicopters. 🙂

All-in-all it is a good time, and a place Ashley and myself hang out quite frequently.

Qualcomm Launches “Internet Processor” With Snapdragon DNA

Qualcomm Launches “Internet Processor” With Snapdragon DNAQualcomm has just announced that it is introducing a line of Internet Processor (IPQ, the Q stands for Qualcomm) that will provide higher performance for connected devices like routers and other Internet appliances that may need to handle high data throughput. When we discussed with Todd Antes from Qualcomm-Atheros, he said that in Qualcomm’s own estimations, a number of Internet devices were limited by their network processing power, instead of their maximum theoretical bandwidth. With these IPQ chips, Qualcomm’s customers should be able to provide faster products. (more…)
