Bill Gates Talks About The Search For New Microsoft CEO

Bill Gates Talks About The Search For New Microsoft CEO

There has already been a lot of speculation about who is going to get the top job at Redmond. Being the CEO of one of the biggest tech companies in the world is no easy job and Microsoft will most definitely be looking for the right candidate. Microsoft co-founder and chairman Bill Gates has attended but not addressed the company’s annual shareholder meeting for the past few years, today he broke that pattern in Bellevue, Washington. Bill Gates talked about various subjects, including the company’s search for a new leader.

Gates thanked Ballmer for his service, adding that Microsoft is “quite unusual” as it has only had two CEOs in its entire 38 year history, the two CEOs being Gates himself and his successor Steve Ballmer. Outgoing CEO Ballmer announced earlier this year that he’s going to step down within the next 12 months as the board’s special committee conducts a search for his successor. Gates said today that the committee is considering several people, both internal and external candidates are being vetted, but he didn’t give any specific names. Recent rumors suggest that ex Nokia CEO Stephen Elop, Ford CEO Alan Mulally and Microsoft COO Kevin Turner are at the top of the list. Gates didn’t say when we can expect the search to be completed, though he did mention that he and the committee are pleased with the search process so far. Gates said that the new CEO will have to lead a “complex global business,” and focus on the company’s strengths and address the areas where its weak or faces challenges.

Stephen Elop Heavily Criticized At Nokia’s Shareholder Meeting [Report]

Stephen Elop Heavily Criticized At Nokias Shareholder Meeting [Report]

Earlier today Nokia’s shareholders met in Finland to vote on the $7.17 acquisition deal made with Microsoft. The deal was approved by an overwhelming majority, 99.7 percent of the shareholders voted in favor. However, it appears that outgoing Nokia CEO Stephen Elop might have been the target of immense criticism at the meeting today. According to one of Finland’s oldest publications, Uusi Suomi, several shareholders were quite vocal in their criticism of Elop, some even described his reign as a “triple-A-flop.”

It didn’t end with just one remark, apparently, as Elop was also reportedly blamed for “the funeral of Nokia phones” and for putting the company itself on the “road to ruin.” The publication reports that matters got so heated during the meeting that the chairman Manne Airaksinen told shareholders present there to refrain from passing any person comment about Stephen Elop. This isn’t the first time that Elop has been criticized in Finland. The country’s press hasn’t been too fond of him particularly after he reportedly refused to accept anything less than the $25 million payday he’s entitled too, despite the fact that under Elop Nokia’s share price and market share dipped considerably. As the transaction closes by Q1, 2014, Elop will move to back to Microsoft where he’s apparently being considered for the CEO slot.

Snapchat Overtakes Facebook In Photo Uploads

Snapchat Overtakes Facebook In Photo Uploads

Snapchat has been in the news recently, apparently because it has a few potential suitors who’re willing to put up billions of dollars. Now why would these companies want to pay so much for a service that’s not generating any revenue at all right now? Perhaps because it has the potential to generate revenue by leveraging its immense growth. Snapchat has now passed Facebook in photo uploads, users are uploading more than 400 million snaps and video messages every single day as opposed to Facebook’s 350 million photo uploads.

Even though the comparison isn’t exactly spot on, given that the 400 million figure includes both photos as well as videos and Snapchat hasn’t given exact figures for both, it is possible that the service may have an edge on Facebook when it comes to just photo uploads. Another thing to consider is the fact that Facebook has over 1 billion users, Snapchat doesn’t have that many, but its few hundred million users are almost equalling the photo upload activity on the world’s largest social network. Perhaps that’s why Facebook was willing to offer as much as $3 billion in cash for Snapchat, which it turned down. Google is said to have outbid Facebook by offering $4 billion, but Snapchat turned Mountain View down as well apparently. They’re in no mood to sell, because if these figures are legit, then the folks at Snapchat are certainly of the view that they’re worth more than $4 billion.

Nokia Shareholders Have Approved Sale To Microsoft

Nokia Shareholders Have Approved Sale To Microsoft

The world marked its calendars for November 19th when it was first announced that Microsoft has agreed to acquire Nokia’s phone business for $7.17 billion. The Finnish manufacturer’s shareholders were to vote on this deal today, and they have done so in favor of the deal with overwhelming majority. 99.7 percent of the votes have returned in favor of Nokia’s phone business being sold to Microsoft, which means that Redmond now has the all clear, at least from Nokia. While some shareholders might have been upset that the iconic Finnish manufacturer will no longer slap its name on devices, that didn’t tilt the vote against the deal in any major way.

As a result of this deal, ex Nokia CEO Stephen Elop will now head back to Redmond where he will take charge as the head of the devices and services team. His name has been rumored to be in the running for the CEO slot at Microsoft, so it remains to be see if he ultimately becomes Ballmer’s replacement. Microsoft gets to keep the Asha and Lumia brands, though it remains to be seen how the company integrates them with its own branding strategies. Ballmer has already said that they could go with shorter device names, but at this point in time, nothing has been said about future devices. Microsoft looks to close the transaction by Q1, 2014.

Selfie Becomes The Word Of The Year For 2013

A number of questionable “words” were added to the Oxford Dictionaries earlier this year, which included phablet, bitcoin and twerk. One word that we’re sure many of you groaned at its inclusion was the word “selfie.” Well – prepare to groan a little bit more as Oxford Dictionaries has announced selfie has been named the word of the year. Nokia Shareholders Expected To Approve Microsoft Acquisition Later Today

Nokia Shareholders Expected To Approve Microsoft Acquisition Later TodayLater today, Nokia’s shareholders are expected to convene and vote on the approval of the sale of Nokia’s handset division to Microsoft, although it should be noted that this does not cover the approval of the Patent License Agreement or the HERE licensing arrangement as well. It is expected that there will not be much opposition to the acquisition by Microsoft as Nokia shareholders have seen the company’s share prices doubled since the deal was announced back in early September. Assuming all goes well with shareholders and regulatory boards approving the acquisition, the deal is expected to conclude in the first quarter of 2014.

Both Microsoft and Nokia have  had a pretty special partnership with each other over the past few years, with Nokia pretty much putting all their eggs into Microsoft’s Windows Phone basket, a move which surprised many given that the Windows Phone platform was struggling at that time. While Windows Phone is still a pretty small player in the smartphone market, it has managed to grow, partly thanks to the efforts of Microsoft and Nokia, with the Finnish company rolling out some pretty impressive Windows Phone devices which have surprisingly caught on in emerging markets. What do you guys think? Are you for this acquisition, or do you think that Nokia should not have sold themselves to Microsoft?

Yamamoto Comes Up With Radiation Shielding Underwear

Yamamoto Comes Up With Radiation Shielding UnderwearThe Fukushima nuclear disaster still remains fresh in the minds of many, despite the event happening nearly three years ago. Well, much has been said about it, and I am quite sure that the Japanese government and people are working hand in hand to help alleviate the condition there within the shortest time possible. Yamamoto Corp. a swimwear company in Japan, has decided to do their bit for the country by coming up with an interesting kind of clothing line that they call “radiation shield wear”.

According to Yamamoto, this will be very different from the usual kind of radiation protective clothing. For instance, the first layer of protection would feature a pair of lead-lined underwear which will make sure that any harmful gamma rays are kept away from your abdomen and lower spine, where it could result in damage to your tissues that would be beyond repair. On top of the crotch guards, you will then pull over a beta ray-shielding drysuit that was specially designed to prevent radioactive materials from sticking to your body. These radiation shielding garments will go on sale later in November, with the drysuit costing a whopping $1,072, while the lead-lined underwear will require you to fork out another $825. Sounds expensive? Better safe than sorry, no? Definitely cooler than any 3D printed underwear for sure. [Product Page]

Microsoft Denies Interest In Renaming Real Madrid’s Stadium

Microsoft Denies Interest In Renaming Real Madrids Stadium

Over the past few weeks it has been rumored multiple times that Microsoft is interesting in securing the naming rights to Santiago Bernabeu Stadium, which is the home of the famous Real Madrid soccer team. The unsubstantiated rumors even claimed at one point that Microsoft co-founder and chairman Bill Gates was personally involved in the negotiations. That is not the case though, as the president of Microsoft operations in Spain has confirmed to the country’s EFE press agency that Microsoft has no intention of renaming Real Madrid’s stadium after it.

Microsoft has collaborated with Real Madrid in the past, and Maria Garana, the president of Microsoft operations in Spain says that the company has “excellent” relationships with the soccer club. She rubbishes the rumors and reiterates that adding Redmond’s brand name is not part of the sponsorship package and that neither party is interested in making such a move. Garana says that Microsoft’s relationship with Real Madrid is “fundamentally based in technology and innovation.” Real Madrid fans, who were quite irritated by these rumors, can certainly heave a sigh of relief. The home of their beloved soccer club isn’t going to be rebranded or renamed in any way, at least not by Microsoft.
