BlackBerry Reportedly Courting Facebook For A Buyout Bid

BlackBerry Reportedly Courting Facebook For A Buyout Bid

BlackBerry has until the first week of November to try and find another buyer before Fairfax Financial Holdings comes back with its final offer. Both parties have currently signed a letter of intent, which puts the buyout bid at $4.7 billion. There have been rumors of a number of other companies looking at BlackBerry’s books, companies such as Lenovo, Intel, Google and more, but no other bids have been received as yet. The Wall Street Journal reports today that BlackBerry executives flew to California to meet with Facebook, in an effort to secure a potential bid from the world’s largest social network.

It is not entirely clear if Facebook is interested in buying out BlackBerry, spokesmen for both companies have declined to comment on this report. Facebook has long been rumored to be interested in making a “Facebook Phone,” it even reportedly tried to reach some sort of an arrangement with Samsung, but nothing of this sort has materialized as yet. Could Facebook finally jump into the hardware game by acquiring the ailing Canadian manufacturer? Its too soon to say right now, though it doesn’t come as a surprise to see BlackBerry try and find new potential suitors, as analysts fear Fairfax might come back with a reduced bid if it sees that its the only buyer BlackBerry has.

But scientist have invented a new welding flame that is comprised entirely of water as it’s main fuel source. The Safeflame has the ability to split water into oxygen and hydrogen to then recombine them outside of the torch’s mouth in order to create fire. Bill Gates, the Harvard Dropout will Finally Get his Degree

This article was written on March 23, 2007 by CyberNet.

BillgatesIt’s pretty well known now that Bill Gates is the World’s richest man, and at the same time, a Harvard dropout. Now Bill will finally get that Harvard degree he started way back in 1973 (and gave up a fear years later as a Junior).

In June, Gates will be speaking at Harvard University’s commencement ceremony, and because of that, he’ll receive an honorary degree. This is one more thing that Gates can add to his impressive list of accomplishments, although it’s not like he really needs to add anything else to his resume.

While Bill is probably one of the most well-known successful college drop-outs, there are actually several more to add to that list like:

    • Steve Jobs = Dropped out of college after 1 semester.
    • Steve Wozniak = Apple co-founder (he’s since then gone back to finish)
    • Michael Dell = University of Texas dropout
    • Lawrence Ellison = Oracle co-founder
    • Paul Allen = Partner in crime with Bill Gates

Google WiFi Passport Launched, Provides Cheap Internet Access For Indonesians

Google WiFi Passport Launched, Provides Cheap Internet Access For IndonesiansWe have heard about how Google plans to eventually allow everyone around the world to connect to the internet, and to kick things off, Google has launched Google WiFi Passport over in Jakarta, Indonesia. This WiFi service is a result of a partnership between Google and MOGPlay where the goal is to offer up WiFi hotspots that have been scattered around the city, allowing those without data plans to connect to the internet for free or for an extremely affordable rate. Given that sometimes carriers do charge a fair bit for data, offering up a cheap alternative could be an attractive option, although the downside would be that for now, those living outside the city might not be able to access it.

The WiFi will be accessible through the WiFi Passport app and vouchers will be offered and give users 10 days of free access, after which additional vouchers can be bought. For example a 20 day voucher will cost around $2, while a 50 day voucher will go for $5 which is admittedly extremely attractive in terms of pricing. As it stands Google WiFi Passport is available only in Jakarta but there is no word if Google plans to take this program to other markets. Thailand has a similar service where local carrier, True, allows their subscribers to connect to various hotspots located throughout the country, giving them the option to hop onto a WiFi hotspot or use their mobile internet, depending on preference and coverage.

12 Year Old Anonymous Hacker Pleads Guilty, Was In It For Video Games

12 Year Old Anonymous Hacker Pleads Guilty, Was In It For Video Games

Hacker collective Anonymous has made quite a name for itself. Yes, the group that threatened to wipe the U.S. “off the cybermap,” the very same group that hacked North Korea’s Flickr and Twitter account as part of “Operation Free Korea.” That hacker collective Anonymous. According to The Toronto Sun, a 12 year old boy in Montreal has pleaded guilty to three counts of hacking in a Canadian court. During the 2012 Quebec student protests, he helped the Anonymous group in DDOS attacks. At the time of the offences, he was 11 years old. He doesn’t seem to be politically motivated like most of the Anonymous members, apparently he traded information for video games.

The report mentions that one of the hacked websites was down for two days, causing as much as $60,000 in damages. His targets reportedly included the websites of Quebec Institute of Public Health, Montreal Police, the Chilean government among others. He reportedly accessed user information and even defaced text and appearance of the sites. The Canadian court will sentence him next month, but seeing as how he is a minor, he’ll obviously not be on his way to a full-blown prison. Also, due to the fact that he’s underage, the boy’s name has not been published and can not be disclosed.

Space Tourism: Orbiting Hotel to Open in 2012

This article was written on August 10, 2007 by CyberNet.

Galactic suite1The thought of boarding a rocket to whisk you off to outer-space for your next hotel stay seems like something you’d see in a movie, doesn’t it? It’s not though because expected in 2012, a hotel called “Galactic Suite” will be the first orbiting hotel. The $3 billion that it will cost to build the hotel has been paid for, mostly by a former aerospace engineer. Guests who travel to the hotel will wear “velcro suits to “crawl” around pod-like rooms so that they can stick themselves to the wall — Spiderman style.”

Any space trip isn’t cheap, and this is no exception. For $4 million dollars you’ll get a three-day stay in which you’ll see the sun rise each day 15 times. The director of the company, Xavier Claramunt says they know that there are at least 40,000 people in the world who could afford the $4 million price for the three-day stay. The hotel would consist of at least three pod-shaped rooms, and Claramunt says the biggest challenge thus far has been designing a bathroom. At this point they believe they have solved the shower problem by designing a “spa room” with floating bubbles of water.

I don’t know about you, but I simply can’t imagine planning my next vacation for a trip to space. The cost not only includes the trip into space and the stay at the hotel, it also covers “eight weeks of intensive training at a James Bond-style space camp on a tropical island.” Even if I had $4 million dollars that I didn’t know what to do with, I still don’t think I’d spend it on a hotel stay in space. Claramunt talked about the fear that many people would have of going into space, but not to worry, “That’s why the shuttle rocket will remain fixed to the space hotel for the duration of the guests’ stay, so they know they can get home again.”

Take A Look At The First Instagram Ad

Take A Look At The First Instagram Ad

Earlier this month Instagram confirmed that it would soon start running photo and video ads. It said that the ads would go live within a couple of months, initially for users in the U.S. who might get to see the “occasional ad” in their feed. Instagram has released a sample ad today which is going to be the first advertisement that users see in their feeds, Instagram says that this ad is going to be distributed in the “coming week.”

This particular advertisement is a one time ad that is being distributed so that users can get an idea of how ads will look and feel on Instagram. Ads will contain a “Sponsored” label where the timestamp is usually found, this stamp will accompany all paid photo and video advertisements. Tapping this label will educate users more on how ads work on Instagram. Running a test ad first would give users a feel of how posts from brands that they do not follow look like in their feeds, so they won’t be caught by surprise once Instagram opens up its ads to a select number of brands, ones that already have a solid following. The test ad will initially only be shown to users based in the U.S.

Samsung And LG Allegedly Caught In The Act Of Industrial Electricity Theft

Samsung And LG Allegedly Caught In The Act Of Industrial Electricity TheftIn South Korea, there are two different kinds of electricity pricing tiers. The more affordable one between the two is meant for industrial use only, and that would mean manufacturing, mining, and other production equipment and facilities (factories included). Apart from that, there is also the standard priced electricity, which is meant for offices, R&D centers, and general purpose buildings among others. Well, this is certainly cause for temptation, as some companies have been discovered to have used the cheap ‘industrial’ electricity for ‘normal’ usage. Surprisingly, both Samsung and LG have been seen on a list of companies in South Korea who have done just that.

This means that both Samsung and LG have been forking out money for the cheaper electricity tariff, instead of purchasing the more expensive electricity tier that they were supposed to. In fact, it has been classified as ‘stealing electricity’ in South Korea, and this has been happening since 2004 – which is a long, long time already. Needless to say, when your hand is caught in the cookie jar, it is time to pay your dues, and the law of restitution would be to pay twice the price difference, so that means burning a hole in their pockets. Ouch! Do you think that this is a harsh enough lesson?

The CyberNet Forum After One Week

This article was written on December 01, 2006 by CyberNet.

CyberNet Forum It has been a week since the CyberNet Forum was launched and I have had a lot of fun with it. Many great topics have found a home on our forum and they are all started by a variety of our 42 members. As of right now there are 274 posts that are spread out over 28 different topics…which means each topic is averaging 10 posts.

Some of the topics cover things like what Firefox extensions do you use, the ultimate list of freeware, and even responses to homepages that people have for their browser. These are all useful and at the same time it gives people a chance to discuss their opinions. I think everyone who has registered is very knowledgeable about technology because if a question is asked there will be someone who jumps in to try and answer it.

I have even found myself spending a lot of time over in the forum trying to help people and share my own opinions. The number of emails that I receive on a daily basis has even dropped slightly because of the forum being a place for people to get my response along with several others. I love the new forum and hope everyone thinks it compliments the blog well.

Over in the forum I have made a post to “commemorate” this one-week marker and have provided a few tips. Believe it or not I never really participated in forums before so this was a whole new experience to me. I find it to be commenting on steroids but some things don’t work like HTML, such as inserting a URL. So I walk you through how to do things like that and how to change a few settings. Hope to see everyone over in the forum!
