Gartner Will Recommend Enterprise Users To Find BlackBerry Alternatives [Report]

Gartner Will Recommend Enterprise Users To Find BlackBerry Alternatives [Report]

Gartner, a well known analyst firm, is reportedly going to recommend to its enterprise clients that they find alternatives to BlackBerry. The firm’s Bill Menezes said in an email interview with ComputerWorld that “Gartner recommends clients take no more than six months to consider and implement alternatives to BlackBerry.” The recommendation comes after the ailing Canadian manufacturer announced that it will focus more on enterprise customers and prosumers more. Enterprise customers still account for a large part of the company’s user base, despite the fact that most major companies and even governments have now allowed devices from other manufacturers on their networks.

Menezes notes that BlackBerry isn’t going to disappear overnight, which is why they’re there’s “probably a six month window” to consider and then implement alternatives. Gartner will deliver a full report with three recommended courses of action to clients who use BlackBerry Enterprise Service and BlackBerry devices soon. It obviously can’t be speculated right now what BlackBerry’s enterprise customers will choose as an alternative, every customer will have their own set of preferences and requirements. Seeing as how they’re crucial for its survival, the company will probably try to keep them on for as long as it can. BlackBerry has already said that it will reduce its device lineup from six to four models, and that they’ll be focusing on enterprise customers. The company has received a $4.7 billion takeover bid, despite that, its future is still uncertain as its BlackBerry 10 devices struggle to become relevant in the global smartphone market.

Samsung Makes $4 Million Investment In Wireless Charging Company

Samsung Makes $4 Million Investment In Wireless Charging Company

Samsung Ventures America has made a $4 million funding in a wireless charging startup called PowerbyProxi. The system that this company has developed allows multiple devices to be placed on a single charger for wireless charging. The system also allows more flexibility on how the devices are positioned on the single charger. Senior investment manager at Samsung Ventures America, Michael Pachos, will now be joining PowerbyProxi’s board as both companies are also forming a strategic partnership. Recently PowerbyProxi announced that it had become an ally of the Wireless Power Consortium, a group that backs the popular Qi wireless charging standard.

The investment from Samsung comes as part of the wireless charging company’s ongoing Series C funding round. PowerbyProxi’s CEO Greg Cross has said that the fact that they have received this investment from “the world’s leading consumer electronic brand,” is in itself an endorsement of the company’s wireless power IP portfolio. Samsung Ventures’ Michael Pachos says that wireless power transfer is going to “significantly change the way consumers use and interact with their devices.” It remains to be seen what fruits the strategic partnership both companies have formed will bear, nevertheless, $4 million for a wireless charging startup is definitely going to be welcome injection.

Unlocked iPhone Works on T-Mobile and Others…

This article was written on August 24, 2007 by CyberNet.

TmobileWow, that didn’t take long. The iPhone launched June 30th, it’s now August 24th, less than two months later and the iPhone has been unlocked from the AT&T Network. Engadget has reported that a team called iPhoneSIMfree.com has created software that takes the exclusivity away from AT&T. Engadget says, “We can confirm with “100% certainty that iPhoneSIMfree.com’s software solution completely SIM unlocks the iPhone, is restore-resistant, and should make the iPhone fully functional for users outside of the US.” They also mentioned the fact that they don’t have a copy of the software, so don’t even ask. 🙂

The team that created the software to unlock the iPhone has set up a website and says they welcome publications from around the world to “apply to receive their iPhone unlocked FREE of charge” to silence any doubters. They also say that they’ll be selling licenses to the software starting next week, and will also offer the purchase of bulk licenses (500 and above). The unlocked iPhone will work on other networks and around the world!

So now that leaves me curious how much they’ll end up charging for the software. Whatever the cost, I’m sure that these people are going to end up with a hefty profit, particularly from those overseas purchasing the software.  And because Apple doesn’t ship iPhones Internationally, I can see many more iPhones being listed and sold on eBay, and shipped Worldwide.

Engadget tested their iPhone with an active T-Mobile SIM, and they had no problems. One of the only downsides with the unlocked iPhone is the that visual voicemail will not work because that’s something special to AT&T’s network. Other than that, everything is “confirmed as working on a non-AT&T network: SMS send/receive, Internet – including Safari, Mail, Google maps, etc. Here’s a video Engadget put together that shows a phone call being made using the iPhone on a T-Mobile network:

Samsung To Spend $13 Billion On Marketing This Year [Analyst]

Samsung To Spend $13 Billion On Marketing This Year [Analyst]

A company can’t just make a product and not market it. Regardless of how amazing the product is, companies have to have a marketing strategy, which usually includes running advertisements on a wide variety of mediums both online and offline. Marketing isn’t just limited to advertising, sales promotions, product placements in TVs and movies and various other factors are included in it as well. Big companies spend big on marketing, and according to one analyst, Samsung might lead the pack in the technology sector this year by spending up to $13 billion on marketing alone.

Analyst Benedict Evans claims that Samsung’s marketing expenditure will reach an all time high in this particular year, with the Korean giant spending a staggering $13 billion dollars. Try and wrap your head around this figure, its more than what Google paid to wholly acquire Motorola Mobility, its more than the entire market value of HTC, its nearly enough to buy BlackBerry almost three times over. It goes without saying that this is a huge marketing budget, one that can only be rivaled by Apple. Evans predicts that if Samsung is able to repeat last year’s growth, it is on track to spend $4.5 billion on marketing alone in the fourth fiscal quarter.

Intel Makes ‘Significant’ Investment In Google Glass Rival

Intel Makes Significant Investment In Google Glass Rival

Intel might not be jumping into the wearable technology market any time soon, but it is putting its weight, and chequebook, behind an established contender. The company announced today that Intel Investments, the Santa Clara based chip maker’s investment arm, has made a “significant” investment in Recon Instruments. It recently launched Recon Jet glasses, which were originally unveiled back at Google I/O 2013. While Recon Jet glasses might look a lot like Google Glass, they’re actually quite different.

With a dualcore processor, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, movement sensors, GPS, HD camera and components from Android OS, Recon Jet allows users to film and track their movements as well as upload the data online. Its actually called the world’s first consumer Heads-up Display for sports. The company claims that up till now it has sold more than 50,000 HUD units around the world. Intel’s investment in Recon will help fund its product development, global sales expansion and marketing. Recon will also benefit from Intel Capital’s “expertise” in manufacturing, operations and technology. Both Recon and Intel Capital are tight-lipped on the amount of this investment, no estimate has been rumored. Intel has already made a similar investment in Thalmic Labs, a company that’s working on wearable technology as well.

Ark Nova Music Concert Hall Is An Inflatable Building

Ark Nova Music Concert Hall Is An Inflatable BuildingThe folks over in Japan do come up with some of the more stunning inventions from time to time. In fact, it was just earlier this morning that we talked about a robot which was specially programmed to pick ripe strawberries, allowing farmers to take a break and let the robot do the job – and it has even been touted to offer up to a 67% higher level of efficiency, now how about that? This time around, we have word that a music hall does not need to take years to build, but rather, it can be inflated. This is what the Ark Nova classical music concert hall is all about.

With a seating capacity of approximately 500, this particular inflatable structure can be erected just about anywhere (as long as the plot of land is suitable enough, of course) in a jiffy. Specially designed by Japanese architect Arata Isozaki who worked alongside the British designer Anish Kapoor, the Ark Nova is set to make its debut in Matsushima this coming September 27 (which is today in Japan by the way) with a concert that will be conducted by classical superstar Gustavo Dudamel. Additional concerts will also see a number of other artists who will range from Claudio Abbado to Ryuchi Sakamoto.
