UK Legalizes CD Rips From June 1 2014 Onwards

UK Legalizes CD Rips From June 1 2014 OnwardsProgress has been extremely slow when it comes to the UK and its copyright law making their way across the finish line in the digital era. It has taken a rather lengthy two-year legislative process for the UK’s Intellectual Property Office to publish the final version of copyright exceptions. In layman’s terms, this would make it legal for users to rip CDs and shift formats from this coming June 1, 2014, onwards, as long as those rips are used for personal purposes and not on a commercial whim or business premise.

Acer Sends Out Invites For 29th April Event

Acer Sends Out Invites For 29th April EventWearable technology is definitely a big thing and it has only been growing. In fact this year we’ve seen efforts from LG, Samsung, Motorola, and Sony and we’re still pretty early in the year. What this means is that it is possible that there could be more wearable devices that we’ve yet to see and it’s possible that Acer could be next.

According to recent invites that Acer has handed out, the company will be hosting an event on the 29th of April in New York City. Unfortunately the invite does not mention what Acer could be unveiling, but it does come with a tagline that reads, “Touch, More Connected” which some have taken to mean that Acer could be using that event to unveil new wearables. Changing Fonts Could Save The Government A Lot Of Money

By now most of us have realized that different fonts come in different sizes and thickness. For example Arial Bold is naturally a lot thicker compared to Arial, and what this means is that the amount of ink required to print an entire page written in Arial Bold would naturally be more, compared to using fonts that are “thinner”.

This is the realization that a 14-year, Suvir Mirchandani, stumbled upon when tasked with trying to save money for his school district. He compared a group of fonts, printed them, weighed them, and came to the startling discovery that if the Garamond font were to be used, it could potentially save his school district $21,000 a year in ink. MIT Researchers Develop New Encryption System That Is Allegedly More Secure

MIT Researchers Develop New Encryption System That Is Allegedly More SecureWhen the Snowden reports were revealed to the public, many were understandably outraged. After all it seemed like what everyone thought about security was a lie, especially since the NSA had no problems getting into emails, messages, phones, equipment, and more.

In fact there were even reports on how the NSA paid encryption companies to make their software more vulnerable so that hacking in would be easier. Then there were also reports on how the NSA is in the process of developing a quantum computer that can supposedly break any encryption. (more…)

Microsoft Enterprise Mobility Suite Could Be Announced On Thursday [Rumor]

Microsoft Enterprise Mobility Suite Could Be Announced On Thursday [Rumor]Come this Thursday, Microsoft will be hosting an event of their own in which many expect Office for iPad to be launched. According to the rumors, Office for the iPad has already been developed but apparently Microsoft is waiting for the greenlight to release the app by its new CEO, Satya Nadella, which we guess could take place this Thursday.

Now apart from launching Office for iPad, Mary Jo Foley of ZDNet claims that Microsoft could be launching another product as well, this time in the form of an Enterprise Mobility Suite. Essentially this is a licensing bundle designed for large enterprises in mind. According to Foley, this will allow IT managers at larger enterprises to manage iPads, iPhones, Android, and Windows devices, sort of like a one-size-fits-all version of BlackBerry’s BES. (more…)

Easter Eggs And Jokes Found Within MS-DOS And Word’s Source Code

Easter Eggs And Jokes Found Within MS DOS And Words Source CodeThe other day we reported on how Microsoft would be releasing the source code for MS-DOS and Microsoft Word to the Computer History Museum where the code is expected to be shared with the public.

What this does is that it allows the public, and especially programmers, to get an idea of what it was like to code software back in the day where things were done perhaps a little more “old school”. Who knew computer code could be an actual museum exhibit, huh? (more…)
