    Thumbs-Up to DivShare’s Facebook App

This article was written on July 10, 2007 by CyberNet.

We know that many of you use DivShare for all of your file sharing/hosting needs, and we also know that many of you are on Facebook. That’s why you’ll be happy to know that DivShare is now takin’ on Facebook! Just yesterday they made the announcement, and now you have yet another easy way to share files with your friends right from Facebook.

    Thumbs up to…

    • The fact that you can upload your files and post them on your profile for your friends to see.
    • You can send the files to specific friends on Facebook
    • You can post your files to the news feed – if there’s something you want all of your friends to see like a video, song, or image, this is the perfect way to notify the masses.

    Thumbs down to…

    • Can’t manage and access uploaded files on Facebook
    • When you click on a file to view it, you’ll be taken to DivShare to view it instead of viewing it from Facebook. It might be nice if it would open in a small pop-up instead of a whole new window.
    • Box.net seems to have a better interface for viewing files on Facebook

This is what the uploader looks like on Facebook– note your options for sharing:

    Divshare_facebook

This is what will appear on your profile after you’ve uploaded files:

    Divshare_facebook3

Overall it’s a great app for Facebook and another smart move by DivShare to make their service to accessible to everybody. And just as the stand alone service, you have unlimited storage up to 200 MB per file!

Japanese Farmer Grows The World’s First Heart-Shaped Watermelon

Japanese Farmer Grows The Worlds First Heart Shaped Watermelon

As hard as it is to believe, I’m no farmer. I’ve lived in a metropolitan area for all of my life, which means if I stick something in the dirt, it’s probably because it’s dead or I need to hide something for a while. One farmer in Japan not only was able to grow a watermelon, which that by itself amazes me, but he was able to grow a heart-shaped watermelon. (more…)

Kamikaze Spaceships Could Be Solution To Incoming Asteroids

Kamikaze Spaceships Could Be Solution To Incoming AsteroidsThe premise of all life as we know it being extinct because of the impact of an asteroid has already been explored theoretically in movies, and most of the time, the solution would be to send a nuke to blow that asteroid into smithereens. Is nuclear power the only answer? Well, it seems that European scientists intend to take a slightly different route. Known as the NEOShield Consortium, this particular group remains focused on developing defenses against killer asteroids that could wipe out entire cities upon impact.

To ensure the safety of humanity, Project NEOShield has started to designed a range of massive spacecraft that is known as kinetic impactors. These will be launched from earth itself, achieving a velocity that is high enough to break up any incoming asteroids upon impact. They are keeping their fingers crossed that through this, the targeted asteroid would either be smashed to bits for us to enjoy a meteor shower here on earth, or to slow down or hasten these asteroids enough so that we will be able to chalk it up as yet another near-miss event. The speed that these kamikaze aircraft will travel? Really high, as NEOShield scientists have already managed to accelerate millimeter-sized objects to more than 22,000 miles per hour before sending them to smash into blocks of stone.

Singulus Looks At 100GB Blu-ray Disc Which Targets 4K Movies

Singulus Looks At 100GB Blu ray Disc Which Targets 4K MoviesDo you still look back in the past with fond memories of when HD DVD and Blu-ray duked it out? I wonder how much of a role did the Sony PS3 play in championing the cause of Blu-ray, but eventually, Blu-ray was no Betamax successor, and HD DVD basically went the way of the dodo not too long after its debut. Having said that, the Blu-ray Disc Association has shared in the past that they are working on a 4K-friendly disc format eventually, but the folks over at Singulus do seem to be impatient as they are not going to wait before making some announcements of their own. Singulus of Germany has apparently just completed production tests of a Blu-ray disc which has been touted to carry a whopping 100GB of storage space into three layers. This has led it to be described as being “ideal” for 4K movies.

Other than such a specification, very little else was mentioned by Singulus about such technology, and it remains to be seen whether these new discs from Singulus will be able to obtain support from the Blu-ray Disc Association, and backwards compatibility with existing players too, would be an issue. Heck, we don’t even know when they will enter mass production, so you can forget about 4K movies on a 100GB Blu-ray disc at least until the year ends.

Hacker Steals Details Of 2 Million Accounts From Vodafone Germany’s Servers

Hacker Steals Details Of 2 Million Accounts From Vodafone Germanys Servers

Vodafone Germany announced today that its servers were targeted by a hacker recently, which resulted in an illegal intrusion. The hacker was able to steal data of more than 2 million accounts. Data included names, date of birth, gender, bank account numbers, bank sort code and addresses. Vodafone says that despite the intrusion, customers’ credit card data, passwords, phone numbers and call data was not stolen. The carrier believes that this was an inside job and it has already alerted the authorities in Germany.

The carrier is now in the process of alerting customers that have been affected by this hack. Vodafone Germany advises affected customers to be wary against phishing attacks and even fake direct debit applications which can be sent to their banks, customers can reduce the risk of the latter by alerting their banks. Vodafone is going to provide affected individuals with an independent fraud protection service free of cost. Despite its claims that the intrusion could not have taken place without inside knowledge, the carrier says that only a fraction of its 36 million German customers have been affected, whereas those in other regions aren’t affected at all. Vodafone hasn’t mentioned exactly when the intrusion took place, it was apparently barred by German authorities from making any disclosures before the initial round of investigation had been completed.

There has been a lot of speculation about Dell’s future, ever since the company’s founder Michael Dell put forward a proposal to take the company private. It hasn’t been easy for Michael Dell, who saw his multi-billion offer being countered by well known investor Carl Icahn. Icahn finally backed out and judging by the preliminary vote tally from the special meeting of shareholders that took place today, the buyout proposal has been approved. Michael Dell will acquire the company in partnership with Silver Lake Partners, a global technology investment firm.

AT&T CEO Personally Apologizes For Controversial 9/11 Tribute Post

AT&T CEO Personally Apologizes For Controversial 9/11 Tribute Post

It isn’t unusual to see companies offer a tribute to those affected by the 9/11 incidents through social media, a lot of companies took to their social media channels yesterday to remember and pay their respects to the victims. AT&T’s tribute post became controversial and within a few hours it had gained a lot of negative comments on both Twitter and Facebook. AT&T was accused of product placement, while some even called the post “tasteless.” It pulled the post after a short while, but not before thousands of people had slammed it.

Randall Stephenson, AT&T’s CEO, today personally apologized for the controversial post. He said that while they intended to honor those who were impacted by the 9/11 incident, “the image used in the post fell woefully short of honoring the lives lost on that tragic day.” Stephenson personally apologized to AT&T’s customers, employees and all those impacted by the incident, saying that it is a day that “Should never be forgotten and never, ever commercialized.” The carrier’s tribue post showed a smartphone recording the 9/11 memorial lights, this image sparked a series of furious comments and allegations of product placement. AT&T is obviously in damage control mode, but its unlikely that the internet will ever forget that this happened.
