Facebook, Google And Yahoo Petition To Reveal FISA Requests

Facebook, Google And Yahoo Petition To Reveal FISA Requests

It hasn’t been long since former CIA technical analyst Edward Snowden leaked a cache of top secret documents which alleged that the NSA was obtaining user data from major internet companies. The companies named in those documents included Facebook, Google, Microsoft and Yahoo, among others. Most of these companies denied knowing about the PRISM program. Its no secret that the U.S. government does make requests for user data under the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act or FISA. The companies aren’t allowed to disclosed what sort of requests have been made under FISA. These three companies have petitioned the government to allow them to reveal FISA requests to their users, so that they can provide more transparency to the users.

Rob Bell, Yahoo’s General Counsel, wrote that withholding information about such requests “breeds mistrust and suspicion — both of the United States and of companies that must comply with government legal directives.” Colin Stretch, Facebook’s General Counsel, wrote in a statement that the company believes there’s more information that the public deserves to know. He also said that the information will help foster an informed debate on whether or not the government backed security programs “adequately balance privacy interests when attempting to keep the public safe.” It remains to be seen if the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court decides to allow companies to make government data requests public.

NBA To Install Motion Tracking Cameras At All Arenas This Season

NBA To Install Motion Tracking Cameras At All Arenas This Season

The NBA has announced that it is going to install motion tracking cameras this season in all arenas. This is being done to provide fans, players and coaches with improved stats and data. NBA is using Stats’ SportVU motion tracking system, which basically uses a six camera setup to collect various types of data. All 30 NBA teams will use the system to calibrate and measure movements of all players and the ball on the court.

For targeted and detailed analysis of both teams and players, the system will generate a continuous stream of data that’s based on factors such as ball possession, player separation, speed, and distance. The data will be used by NBA Game Time app, nba.com and NBA TV to provide fans with detailed breakdown of every game and to enchance the statistics that the league currently offers. The algorithms that are used to collect data will constantly be refined, they’re already able to identify certain plays as well as defensive rotations. Previously only 15 teams were using this technology, so the database wasn’t comprehensive. Now, the data about every team and every player will be collected every night, thus enabling the NBA to offer a more comprehensive database to both teams and fans alike.

Verizon Gets Sued By Shareholder Over Its $130 Billion Deal With Vodafone

Verizon Gets Sued By Shareholder Over Its $130 Billion Deal With Vodafone

A couple of weeks ago rumors were circulating that Verizon might finalize a deal with Vodafone to buy the latter’s 45 percent stake. Last week Verizon finally announced that the deal had been reached to the tune of $130 billion. Under the deal, Verizon pays the British telecommunications giant $59 billion in cash and another $60 billion in its stock and other considerations. A lawsuit has now been filed in a New York state court by Natalie Gordon. She claims that Verizon’s shareholders are being “shortchanged” by the purchase of Vodafone’s stake, adding that Verizon has overpaid and that “Wall Street analysts concur.”

Verizon CEO Lowell McAdam and 12 directors have been named as defendants in this lawsuit, they’ve been accused of breaching their fiduciary duties. The lawsuit seeks class-action status, the aim is to get Verizon to either improve the terms of this deal, rescind the purchase or compel individual defendants to pay damages. This lawsuit mentions drop in the carrier’s share price on September 3rd, when it was trading for $45.08 a day after the deal had been announced. On August 29th, when it was rumored that Verizon had initiated talks with Vodafone, the share price was trading at a peak of $48.60. This 7.2 percent decline has been defined as “almost 10 percent” in the lawsuit. Executive vice president and general counsel of Verizon, Randal Milch, said in a statement that the lawsuit is “entirely without merit, and Verizon intends to defend itself vigorously.”

Analyst Thinks Nokia Makes A Better Purchase Than Motorola

Analyst Thinks Nokia Makes A Better Purchase Than MotorolaBack in 2011, Google acquired Motorola Mobility, and fast forward 2 years, Microsoft acquired Nokia’s cellphone division. Both are huge acquisitions and they are of some pretty established companies, but is it possible to think who got the “better” company? Well according to brand specialist, Kontera, they believes that Microsoft’s purchase of Nokia was a better one compared to Google’s purchase of Motorola.

This is not based on the opinion of an analyst as Kontera’s executive VP of marketing and action products, Ammiel Kamon, found that through the correlation of content that consumers viewed online, about 2 billion content items analyzed daily, it was found that consumers engaged more with Nokia compared to Motorola. “In a nutshell, Nokia is a significantly stronger global brand. It has tremendous recognition value, and that brand strength is a spark that can translate into sales and market share, given strong products and distribution channels.”

Kamon goes on to state that because awareness of Microsoft’s Windows Phone platform is lower than that of iOS and Android, the acquisition of Nokia is a “game changer” for their marketing strategy.  Of course given that Microsoft plans to drop the Nokia brand from future handsets, we’re not sure how this will play out, but what do you guys think?

New Microsoft CEO Might Not Be Stephen Elop [Rumor]

New Microsoft CEO Might Not Be Stephen Elop [Rumor]

On Monday, Microsoft announced out of the blue that it has acquired Nokia’s core phone business for $7.17 billion. The deal saw Stephen Elop, Nokia’s CEO, return to Microsoft. Outgoing CEO Steve Ballmer, who is set to retire within 12 months, said that Elop has gone from being an external candidate to an internal one. Since the deal was announced it has been rumored that perhaps the most coveted job at Redmond might go to Elop. People with knowledge of the matter “strongly” hint to Reuters that while Elop is a probable candidate, it’s unlikely that he might become Microsoft’s new CEO.

The source adds that this deal won’t distract the committee tasked with finding a new CEO from conducting a “thorough search” for the best possible candidate. Investors and people familiar with Microsoft’s board’s thinking believe that Elop’s track record at Nokia is “decidedly mixed,” which is probably one of the reasons why he’s not apparently a frontrunner for Ballmer’s job. During his tenure as Nokia’s CEO, the company shares fell 60 percent. He took the helm of the Finnish company back in 2010, becoming the first non-Finn to clinch the job. In its search, the board’s special committee will look at all possible external and internal candidates, no other names have surfaced so far.

    Mab Cleaning System Concept

Mab Cleaning System ConceptIf there is one thing about concepts that everyone absolutely loves, it would be this – the apparent ability to perform the seemingly impossible at that point in time, without being limited by any kind of laws of physics or other perceived ceilings. It allows one to think out of the box, and then retroactively work on the solution to what we have today. Case in point, the Mab cleaning system from a certain Adrian Perez Zapata, who happens to be a 23-year-old Colombian college student with the dream to make cleaning house a simple task.

This particular concept would see a spherical hive of small flying drones into your home, where the “hive” itself has been specially designed to work as not only a charging station for the drones, but also as one of the options for you to dispose of your home’s refuse. The drones would not fly around as and when they please, but rather, will be released at pre-programmed times, so that they need not get in your way when you just want to relax in the living room without any more disturbances. The moment these drones take to the air, they will perform multiple trips around the home, ensuring that grime and other kinds of dirt are removed from their supply of cleaning fluid that is obtained from a reservoir located atop their hive. Of course, this remains but a concept at the moment, so it might never even be realized in this generation.

    PrioVR Full VR Body Suit

PrioVR Full VR Body Suit Virtual Reality (VR), the Holy Grail of gaming, does seem to have improved by leaps and bounds over the years, but somehow or rather, it has not really managed to hit the lofty and intended heights to date. Well, this does not mean that those with the technical know how and a dream to make it happen are going to let the world of VR remain stagnant. Here we are with a Kickstarter project known as the PrioVR, which will be a full VR body suit that would enable you to achieve real-time, full-body control over an in-game character. This is the stuff of dreams, where you can remain fully immersed in the game, although there is the remote possibility of being so “into” the game, that you run into a physical wall – literally.

Still, the PrioVR’s main strength so far might be the ability to overcome the nausea-inducing lag issues which plague other solutions such as the Oculus Rift. There are two different PrioVR body suits for you to indulge in, where the 11-sensor PrioVR LITE suit will cost you $450. Of course, there is something else out there for those who have heavier pockets, the PrioVR PRO suit, that will boast of a whopping 17 sensors, albeit it will burn a very real $625 from your bank account.

Microsoft, Tellme are Talkin’ Business – Acquisition Confirmed

This article was written on March 14, 2007 by CyberNet.

The rumor is true! Microsoft has confirmed that they will in fact be acquiring Tellme Networks. Everybody knew it was coming (despite both parties denying it), it was just a matter of when. GigaOm is reporting that the deal is worth over $800 million but below 1 Billion which makes it one of Microsoft’s most expensive purchases!

Tellme is known for their voice services for the phone including providing information to callers on businesses, driving directions, stock quotes, weather, movies show times, etc. And according to the Microsoft Press Release, Microsoft will use this acquisition to improve and expand their speech capabilities.

    Tellme

Recently Tellme has been experimenting with new products that make use of voice by allowing mobile phone users say what they want, and then they get a response back to their phone as data. Another service uses text messaging to allow users to request something and then get a response back as a text message with their options.

With this purchase, Microsoft is also hoping to improve their voice-enabled apps “including Windows Vista operating system, the Microsoft Office system, and mobile applications such as Windows Mobile and Windows Automotive.”

There’s already rumors that Microsoft is working on some type of phone to compete with the Zune, and an obvious step would be to incorporate some of Tellme services into that phone.
