Mega Developing “Cutting Edge” Encrypted Email Service

Mega Developing Cutting Edge Encrypted Email Service

After the NSA’s top secret spying programs were brought to light, by former CIA technical analyst Edward Snowden, many people are started speaking out against widespread surveillance of online activity. The documents leaked by Snowden reveal programs that are capable of tapping in to Skype audio and video calls, monitoring internet history and even accessing the content of emails. Lavabit, an encrypted email provider that Snowden used, recently shut down because apparently its owner and operator didn’t want to become “complicit in crimes against the American people.” It is believed that rather than comply with a surveillance order, Lavabit chose to shut down. Another secure email provider, Silent Mail, also shut down because it saw the “writing on the wall.” So there’s evidently a void needs to be filled, and that’s where Kim Dotcom’s Mega comes in.

Mega CEO Vikram Kumar says that they have been doing “very hard” work in order to develop a secure email service. He says that since the service is going to be based on true end-to-end encryption, its becoming hard to provide features that users expect from a conventional email provider. Kumar says that they are doing “cutting edge stuff.” Kim Dotcom, the founder of Mega says that the company won’t retain decryption keys for customer accounts, thus making itself unable to read user’s email, and as a result, being unable to comply with a surveillance order. No word as yet on when this encrypted email service will go live.

NASA 3D-Printing Gets Closer To “Star Trek Replication”

NASA has been testing 3D printing in space, and this is an interesting development because this could eventually lead to having the space agency “print” a number of replacement parts. Clearly, when you are in the space station, getting parts shipped to you is more than problematic since a launch to space can cost half a billion dollars. (more…)

BlackBerry Forms Special Committee To Explore “Strategic Alternatives”

BlackBerry Forms Special Committee To Explore Strategic Alternatives

BlackBerry’s troubles are well documented. Since January 2013 the company has embarked on a journey to turn itself around, dropping RIM in favor of a singular brand, which is BlackBerry. It launched the BlackBerry 10 platform and along with it two new devices that have failed to gain back crucial market share. Analysts often wonder what is in store for the ailing Canadian manufacturer, and how its shareholders feel about investing in a company that’s struggling to regain its position in the global market. Recently there was a rumor that BlackBerry is considering going private, while there’s no official news on that just yet, the company has announced the formation of a new special committee that will explore “strategic alternatives” in or to escalate BlackBerry 10 deployment.

The company says that these “strategic alternatives” may include among others, “possible joint ventures, strategic partnerships or alliances, a sale of the Company or other possible transactions.” The committee has been formed by BlackBerry Board of Directors. It includes CEO Thorsten Heins, Richard Lynch, Bert Nordberg, Barbara Stymiest and Timothy Dattels as the chair. As the work continues on finding alternatives, BlackBerry CEO Thorsten Heins says that the company will continue with their strategy of driving efficiency, reducing costing and increasing the adoption of BlackBerry 10. It can’t be said for sure whether BlackBerry will make a transaction of some sort, whether its a partnership or an outright sale, but its evident that the board is searching for new ways to improve the company’s position.

Researchers Use Tweets To Map Out Restaurants That Could Give You Food Poisoning

Researchers Use Tweets To Map Out Restaurants That Could Give You Food PoisoningWhile restaurant reviews and ratings might be a good indication of whether you should visit a particular establishment, sometimes there are patrons to restaurants who would rather tweet their experience rather than write a review on Yelp or Foursquare, and if you’ve always wanted to know which restaurants to avoid if you want to save yourself a trip to the doctor’s following a bout of food poisoning, the nEmesis system could be something worth taking a look into.

Developed by a group of researchers at the University of Rochester, basically what the nEmesis system does is that it searches for tweets that could have possibly been made by restaurant goers who have suffered from a foodborne illness. From there it attempts to map out restaurants that they might have gone to show you which particular place you should avoid, especially if you were thinking of going. It’s a pretty interesting system and according to the researchers, they have found a valid correlation between their nEmesis system and official data from the US Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.

If you’d like to read more about their findings, hit up the University of Rochester’s website for the details.

Death Star Holographic Globe Arrives On iOS Platform

Death Star Holographic Globe Arrives On iOS Platform“That thing’s operational!” is one of the more famous quotes upon discovering that the Death Star might not look completed, and yet it is already more than capable of swatting aside the MC-80 cruises aside like flies. Having said that, don’t you wish that holograms could have been invented so that they can see action in everyday use? Well, that is seemingly the case with the Star Wars Death Star hologram, as it was developed as a group project at the School of Electronic & Electrical Engineering at the University of Leeds, U.K.. Known as the POV Globe, it is capable of offering a vibrant and animated circular display that is housed within a glass globe, which more or less gives out the effect of a holographic image. This unique visual effect happens thanks to a ring of RGB LEDs which happen to rotate at 300 revolutions per minute.

Right at the center of this invention lies a Raspberry Pi controller that has been specially outfitted with a custom FPGA-based HDMI decoder. The moment the LED ring starts to gain speed, the image will be projected – sure it is not high definition, but it definitely is able to deliver one of the closest looks at a readily available hologram, just like the ones you would have drooled over in a science fiction movie.

    SmileDrive App Launched By Volkswagen

You know, it makes perfect sense to keep your eyes peeled on the road whenever you are behind the wheel, and the use of smartphones while driving can be dangerous – not only to yourself, but to other motorists on the road. After all, it takes a few seconds of carelessness for disaster to happen – and even worse, one might end up in a potentially fatal situation. Having said that, Volkswagen has just introduced the SmileDrive app that intends to make make driving a more fun experience. This is an Android app, and the good news is, you do not need to own a Volkswagen to make use of this app, although it is essential that your smartphone and car are able to “communicate” via Bluetooth connectivity.

Upon a successful connection between your ride and SmileDrive, the app will run in the background throughout the entire duration of your commute. Upon arriving at your destination, you will be able to check out a list of your on-road achievements, stickers and “punches”. The punches are reminiscent of an old grade school game “Slug Bug” (or as VW has named it “Punch Dub”), where each time you pass a VW Beetle on the road, you end up with a “punch”. The achievements list is a long one, and at least getting stuck in traffic would not make you lose any of the proverbial points, so to speak.

Game Of Throne’s Piracy Is Better Than An Emmy, According to Time Warner’s CEO

Game Of Thrones Piracy Is Better Than An Emmy, According to Time Warners CEOPiracy, for the most part, has been viewed in a negative light, especially it usually implies a loss of income for at least one party. In any case you might have heard that HBO’s Game of Thrones was the most pirated TV show on the internet, despite the US ambassador pleading to stop the pirated downloads, and while that does not sound too good, the director of the show was not too concerned, with some at HBO even taking it as a compliment, and now it looks like HBO’s parent company, Time Warner, does not seem too fussed over the piracy either.

Speaking at a recent earnings call, Jeff Bewkes, the CEO of Time Warner, was asked on how he felt about the piracy of the show. Bewkes admitted that the piracy wasn’t all that bad, and he agreed that he too saw it as a compliment of sorts. In fact Bewkes went on to state that it was better than winning an Emmy and was quoted as saying, “Our experience is that it leads to more paying subs. I think you’re right that Game of Thrones is the most pirated show in the world. That’s better than an Emmy.” Now that’s saying something!

Bill Gates Criticizes Google For Not Doing Enough Philanthropic Work

Bill Gates Criticizes Google For Not Doing Enough Philanthropic WorkBill Gates has been known for his philanthropic efforts, having spent his time and millions, if not billions, of his money to help improve living conditions around the world, especially in developing countries. While that is certainly a noble effort on his part, it seems that he also expects people and companies of his position and status to do the same thing, to the point where he has recently criticized Google for being carrying out more philanthropic activities.

Speaking to Bloomberg in an interview, Gates was quoted as saying, “Google started out saying they were going to do a broad set of things. They hired Larry Brilliant, and they got fantastic publicity. And then they shut it all down. Now they’re just doing their core thing. Fine. But the actors who just do their core thing are not going to uplift the poor.” Gates also went on to criticize Google’s plan to introduce balloons that will provide internet saying that providing internet will not help a child suffering from diarrhea or malaria. What do you guys think? Does Google deserve to be taking flack from Bill Gates just because he does not think they are as philanthropic as he is?

Webcam Broadcast From Warhol Grave Marks Artist’s Birthday

Webcam Broadcast From Warhol Grave Marks Artist’s BirthdayIf Andy Warhol were to be alive today, he would have turned 85, but alas, he left the world all the way back in 1987, but not before ensuring that his legacy among the great pop artists would have been immortalized. Apparently, in order to celebrate what would have been Warhol’s 85th birthday, a museum which was set apart and dedicated to Andy Warhol has broadcasted a live webcam feed from his grave in Pittsburgh, US. This particular project was called “Figment” as the late artist did mention before that he would have liked the word inscribed on his gravestone, or so the Pittsburgh-based Warhol Museum shared.

Warhol’s gravestone lies in a graveyard in suburban Pittsburgh, and comes with Warhol’s original surname, Warhola, in addition to the dates of his birth and death and a cross. According to museum director Eric Shiner, one of Warhol’s quotes mentioned, “I always thought I’d like my own tombstone to be blank. No epitaph and no name. Well, actually, I’d like it to say ‘Figment’.”, hence the project name. This is an interesting way of using technology to honor the departed, even more so a famous one, don’t you think so?

Comcast Said To Be Readying New Anti-Piracy Strategy

Comcast Said To Be Readying New Anti Piracy Strategy

There has been much debate on ways to curb online piracy, but no one seems to have come up with a concrete solution up till now. For the people who make movies, TV shows and music, piracy is a big problem. Rumor has it that Comcast is readying a new strategy so as to drive down the rate of pirated movies and TV shows being downloaded. Variety, citing unnamed sources, claims that Comcast’s strategy is to display links to legally buy or rent movies or TV shows that a user is attempting to download illegally. This would mean that those users will actually have to pay for whatever they wish to download, the price they pay will not only be for the content itself, it will also be for upholding the law.

This new strategy is radically different from the Copyright Alert System that’s currently in place. User’s indulging in online piracy receive notices from their ISP, if they ignore them continuously, their accounts may be suspended or the ISP may throttle their internet speed. Comcast is apparently trying to get movie studios and ISPs onboard, so right now it is not known when this new strategy will come in effect.
