Paytouch Lets You Shop Without Your Wallet

Paytouch Lets You Shop Without Your WalletWhen the going gets tough financially, many of us fall back on our three good friends, American Express, Visa and Mastercard. Of course, that is not the most prudent way of walking forward, but hey, we got to do what we’ve got to do to stay alive, no? Well, carrying cash around used to be the norm for the masses, but it could get dangerous with the rising number of crime cases all around. What if you had something that allows you to perform transactions without having to carry cash around? A debit card is a good idea for cashless shopping without spending tomorrow’s money, but with the Paytouch idea, all it requires is a quick fingerprint scan whenever you want to make a purchase, and you’re good to go.

Basically, the Paytouch system would hook up your card information to your personal fingerprint. While it might be safer that way, it could very well be more dangerous as well, as you start “spending” money without keeping track on how much dough you have as you make your way through the different shops, one by one. Right now, the company behind Paytouch is focused on selling their product at gas stations and grocery stores throughout Spain, with expansion plans for other countries in Europe and of course, to the US.

Yahoo Android App Update Brings Summly Integration

Yahoo Android App Update Brings Summly Integration

Recently Yahoo acquired a mobile news app called Summly, which was developed by a teenager from UK called Nick D’Aloisio, for $30 million. Nick developed Summly when he was 15 years old and now he is one of the youngest self made millionaires in the world. Soon after its acquisition, Yahoo updated its iPhone app with Summly integration. Today they’ve finally brought over the technology to their Android app, which is now available for download.

The new Yahoo app for Android looks a lot like its iOS counterpart. It will offer users the same “visual stream of stories” that it does on the other app. If you’ll be using this app a lot to read up on a variety of topics, chances are you’ll come across something that you’ll want to share. The app has prominent buttons for sharing content to Twitter, Facebook as well as various Android apps. Users can also choose their preferred topics to be shown more information on them. Yahoo has also improved its image, video and Web tabs so that the app can show better search results. The new Yahoo app for Android can now be downloaded from Google Play Store.

Samsung And Intel Throw Money In Expect Labs’ Way

Samsung And Intel Throw Money In Expect Labs’ WayIt has been reported that both Intel and Samsung are going to invest in a speech analysis company that is known as Expect Labs, in addition to Telefónica Digital, where Expect Labs’ technology is used to analyze and understand conversations in real-time, in addition to finding out related information. It cannot be denied that speech recognition is gaining more and more prominence among users of smartphones, tablets and computers, in addition to TVs, of course. Expect Labs also claim that the future might see connected devices that “will know who we are, understand what we say, and be far more capable of interpreting our intentions and anticipating our needs.”

One of Expect Labs’ already developed apps would be MindMeld, which is capable of analyzing a conversation, where it would then display related relevant pictures, videos and articles automatically. Right now, MindMeld is available over at Apple’s iPad, and is on its way to Android and other platforms sometime down the road. It would be interesting to see how the “injection” of dough would spur Expect Labs to greater heights.

Intel CEO Supports Softbank’s Bid To Acquire Sprint

Intel CEO Supports Softbanks Bid To Acquire SprintWe’re sure you guys might have heard that Japanese carrier, Softbank, is looking to acquire a majority stake in one of the major US carriers, Sprint. At the same time it seems that American company, Dish, could be interested as well and seems to be thinking about making a counter-offer of their own. Dish even goes as far as saying that their acquisition of Sprint could be better for national security. In any case it would seem that Softbank might have stumbled across a hurdle, but at the same time it looks like the Japanese carrier may have found themselves an ally in the form of Intel’s CEO, Paul Otellini, who in an email sent to FCC chairman, claims that he supports Softbank.

According to the email, Otellini was quoted as saying, “Son-san’s vision to build a high speed competitive third national network is very compelling […] We need this competition in the wireless space as the ATT / Verizon model is not giving that to consumers at this time.” We’re not sure if Otellini’s message of support will play a role in helping the regulatory bodies decide if this acquisition should be allowed to happen, so we guess we will just have to wait and see.

Vulnerability In Adobe Reader Discovered By McAfee

Vulnerability In Adobe Reader Discovered By McAfee

A new vulnerability has been discovered in Adobe Reader by security firm McAfee. The vulnerability makes it possible for people to see how a PDF file has been used. This un-patched security issue exists in every version of Adobe Reader, according to Haifei Li of McAfee. The latest sandboxed Adobe Reader XI, version 11.0.2, also has this vulnerability. It doesn’t allow code execution, meaning that this flaw isn’t a problem that should set off alarm bells, but it could pose a certain kind of threat.

The vulnerability only allows a sender to see where and when a PDF file has been opened. It is not entirely harmless though. This security flaw could be used by hackers to gain sensitive information such as ISP details and IP addresses  McAfee hasn’t been able to pinpoint who is exploiting this Adobe Reader flaw as yet, but believes that an “email tracking service” provider is involved. Adobe hasn’t commented on this issue as yet, though McAfee says that they have reported this security flaw to Adobe, who haven’t confirmed to them whether they’ll be releasing a patch in the near future.

New Wikimedia Commons App Makes Photo Donation To Wikipedia A Breeze

Almost all internet using folks have landed upon Wikipedia at some point in their lives. The online encyclopedia has become a vital part of the internet and is heavily relied upon by students, professionals and the average Joe and Jane from around the world. Wikipedia entries not only contain text, they also contain pictures. The Wikimedia Commons project works hard to collect photos and media files that are relevant to Wikipedia pages. They’ve now released new iOS and Android app which lets users submit their own photos to Wikimedia.

The Wikimedia Commons app for iOS and Android offers simple functionality. Users can tag, title and upload pictures from the gallery of their device or by snapping one through the camera. Additional functions are available through the web app, the mobile app simply offers the ability to upload pictures. Though before a user can start uploading pictures through these apps, they’ll need to sign up for an account, and that can only be done online, not through the app. The apps for each platform can be downloaded from iTunes App Store and Google Play Store.

Evernote Food For Android Update Brings New User Interface

Evernote Food For Android Update Brings New User Interface

In the past few months we have seen Evernote Food for iOS receiving a number of updates. It seemed like Evernote had neglected the Android app, as it had not received any such update even when the iOS version was getting them. Today the update of Evernote Food for Android has finally been released, the update makes this app similar to its iOS counterpart as it comes with a significantly improved user interface which includes a new navigation drawer.

The basic function of this app is to make it easier for users to remember the food that they love. Evernote Food 2.0 update gives users access to thousands of recipes from some of the best food websites. The MyCookbook feature displays all recipes saved using the app, and if they have been clipped or saved in Evernote, the recipes will all show up in My Cookbook. My Meals feature offers a photographic journey through your past food escapades. There’s also a location based list of restaurants through which one can clip and save restaurants they want to try or keep a log of those they have already visited. The updated app is available for download now from Play Store.

Microsoft Installs Wi-Fi Routers In Forbes Magazines For Office 365 Promotion

Microsoft has come up with an interesting way to promote Office 365. It has partnered with Forbes to install Wi-Fi routers inside its magazines, which Microsoft has confirmed have been sent to a “limited number of technology and business professionals”. The router is part of a custom 4 page insert in Forbes magazine’s May 6, 2013 issue. T-Mobile is providing internet connectivity, which can be freely used for 15 days.

This method of promotion is different from conventional ways such as pasting ads on buses, park benches, subways or running ads on TV. Come to think of it, who doesn’t love free Wi-Fi? Even though every Forbes magazine buyer won’t be getting 15 days of free Wi-Fi, most of them will read about this unique campaign online, and this helps Microsoft in getting the word out about Office 365. Up to five devices can connect to the router in this 4 page insert, allowing you to share the free internet. People who receive this special issue are advised to first recharge the router, which is capable of lasting up to three hours on a single charge. What do you think about this method of promotion, isn’t it cool?

Android App Updates Now Restricted From Bypassing Google Play Store

Android App Updates Now Restricted From Bypassing Google Play Store

Back in March we reported that Facebook was testing silent updates for its Android app. Silent update means that Facebook would have circumvented the Google Play Store and app updates would have been downloaded in the background while a device was connected to a Wi-Fi network. User’s wouldn’t be notified that an update is available, the update would have been automatically downloaded and then the user would have been prompted to install said update. Google apparently doesn’t want developers following in the footsteps of Facebook, so its has updated the Play Store policies and barred apps from circumventing the Store for updates.

The change in policy says that: “app downloaded from Google Play may not modify, replace or update its own APK binary code using any method other than Google Play’s update mechanism.” Google has implemented this Play Store policy change soon after word of Facebook’s silent Android app updates got out. If other developers follow suit, this would radically decrease dependence on Play Store, and by the looks of it, that is not something that Mountain View is too excited about.
