Hyperkin RetroN 4 to Play Original NES, SNES, Genesis, and GBA Carts via HDMI

Fans of classic gaming systems will be happy to hear that HyperKin is working on their latest retro console, and this one has a couple of new tricks up its nonexistent sleeves.

The latest system, dubbed the RetroN 4, leverages today’s technologies to bring improvements to retro gaming. Like the RetroN 3 before it, the new console can play NES, SNES and Genesis cartridges, but can also play Game Boy Advance carts too. It can also handle both NTSC and PAL formats. But the big upgrades come in the form of Bluetooth wireless controllers, and an HDMI output for use on today’s HDTVs.

In addition, the new console will sport an interface called “Perdana,” which is expected to provide capabilities like button reassignment and “other features” to be announced. Personally, I’m hoping for some sort of ability to save game states or run cheat modes, but those aren’t confirmed.

The RetroN 4 is expected to be revealed at the Midwest Gaming Classic in Brookfield, Wisconsin on Saturday, March 23 at 11:00am Central.

Hyperkin’s fourth RetroN console wants to be the perfect way to enjoy gaming’s past glories. Alongside the ability to play NES, SNES, Gameboy and Sega Genesis titles, it’s compatible with PAL and NTSC formats, with ports for your NES, SNES and Genesis controllers — you still have those, right? If not, Hyperkin’s own Bluetooth-connected controllers can fill in, while the console’s UI will allow you to reassign buttons as needed. There’s also HDMI output, so those 16-bit graphics will get the full glory of your HD plasma screen. Alas, following another notable games console, the company isn’t showing off the device just yet. You’re looking at its predecessor above, which should at least give your mind’s eye something to work with until it’s finally unfurled at Wisconsin’s Midwest Gaming Classic on March 23rd.

Hyundai unveils HCD-14 Genesis concept: suicide doors, gesture and eye controls

Hyundai unveils HCD14 Genesis concept suicide doors, gesture and eye controls

At NAIAS 2013 Hyundai has given an indication of where its “premium vehicles” are headed with its HCD-14 Genesis concept. Sporting a sharp-edged style and suicide doors, the sedan gets even better inside, with a control layout that foregoes the traditional knobs and buttons. According to Hyundai (it wasn’t demonstrated) it includes eye tracking and 3D hand gesture recognition accurate enough to control navigation, infotainment, audio, HVAC, and one’s phone.

The RWD vehicle packs a 5.0-liter Hyundai Tau V8 engine under the hood with optical recognition that verifies its driver before starting. Hyundai stated that there would be two vehicles on the way following this concept’s design, with the second including even more of its advanced tech. Check out the full list in the press release after the break, as well as a good look at the car in our gallery.

Monster Genesis High-End Headphones

Noel Lee, the “Head Monster”, shows us the Genesis before handing them over for a quick ears-on

Monster produces a ton of cool headphones, but the Genesis is the latest wonder-baby of the company. Monster classifies the Genesis headphones as being an ultra-premium headphone design that will surely give Bose and the like a run for their money. The Monster Genesis is an active noise-cancelling headphone that has a very sturdy design, but it was also lighter than one may think. That’s what I really like about the Genesis: the blend between high-quality audio and industrial design, but not at the price of additional weight on my head. I’ve tried other high-end headphones, and many of them are just too heavy for a daily use – even if they all feel incredibly solid. (more…)

The Nook Simple Touch can run a Genesis emulator, but should it

There we were, thinking touch-based versions of gaming classics were a bad idea on a device intended for gaming — and then we saw Sonic the Hedgehog 2 running on a Nook Simple Touch. YouTube user “ndncnbvcuyuys” rooted his touch-based Barnes & Noble e-reader, installed the Android 2.1 OS on it, and hooked up a Sega Genesis emulator. The results are not what we’d call “ideal,” but as the hacker says, “It is playable.” Sure, technically speaking, the on-screen virtual buttons allow interaction with Sonic and his buddy Tails, but whether it’s any fun at all is another question altogether. “ndncnbvcuyuys” seems to have a penchant for the impossibly fast games on touch-based e-readers, as he got PlayStation 1’s WipeOut running on the Nook Simple Touch just a few weeks back. Might we suggest a PlayStation Vita instead?

[Thanks, Ron]

Sega Genesis Emulator Runs on Nook Simple Touch: Sonic the Black and White Hedgehog

Electrostatic ink based E-readers aren’t exactly the best devices for moving images, due to their slow refresh rates and black and white screens. But that didn’t stop somebody from porting a SEGA Genesis emulator to the $99 Android-based Nook Simple Touch reader anyhow.

YouTuber ndncnbvcuyuys (try and pronounce that!) posted this video of his rooted Nook Simple Touch running the Genesis emulator, and playing Sonic the Hedgehog 2. It’s clear from the video clip below that the Nook is more than up to the task of emulating the classic 16-bit console.

I’m actually impressed how well the side-scroller plays, given its fast action and movement – though it’s unclear if the emulator supports sound. You can check out detailed pics of the emulator in action over on Imgur, and some other fun emulators running on the Nook Simple Touch here.

[REVIEW] Shuttle XPC SZ77R5

Introduction
During this year’s Computex, one of the products that caught our eyes was this Shuttle XPC (model: SZ77R5). It is a fairly small machine so you tend to walk by very quickly, however we stopped to read the specifications sheet of this little black box claiming to be a fully-fledged gaming rig. First impression was quite obviously “yea, like this baby case will… “
After agreeing to test one of these XPC (eXtreme PC) models, we have to admit there is a lot more than meets the …
