Hasta La Gadget!

Fans of classic gaming systems will be happy to hear that HyperKin is working on their latest retro console, and this one has a couple of new tricks up its nonexistent sleeves.

The latest system, dubbed the RetroN 4, leverages today’s technologies to bring improvements to retro gaming. Like the RetroN 3 before it, the new console can play NES, SNES and Genesis cartridges, but can also play Game Boy Advance carts too. It can also handle both NTSC and PAL formats. But the big upgrades come in the form of Bluetooth wireless controllers, and an HDMI output for use on today’s HDTVs.

In addition, the new console will sport an interface called “Perdana,” which is expected to provide capabilities like button reassignment and “other features” to be announced. Personally, I’m hoping for some sort of ability to save game states or run cheat modes, but those aren’t confirmed.

The RetroN 4 is expected to be revealed at the Midwest Gaming Classic in Brookfield, Wisconsin on Saturday, March 23 at 11:00am Central.

At NAIAS 2013 Hyundai has given an indication of where its “premium vehicles” are headed with its HCD-14 Genesis concept. Sporting a sharp-edged style and suicide doors, the sedan gets even better inside, with a control layout that foregoes the traditional knobs and buttons. According to Hyundai (it wasn’t demonstrated) it includes eye tracking and 3D hand gesture recognition accurate enough to control navigation, infotainment, audio, HVAC, and one’s phone.

The RWD vehicle packs a 5.0-liter Hyundai Tau V8 engine under the hood with optical recognition that verifies its driver before starting. Hyundai stated that there would be two vehicles on the way following this concept’s design, with the second including even more of its advanced tech. There we were, thinking touch-based versions of gaming classics were a bad idea on a device intended for gaming — and then we saw Sonic the Hedgehog 2 running on a Nook Simple Touch. YouTube user “ndncnbvcuyuys” rooted his touch-based Barnes & Noble e-reader, installed the Android 2.1 OS on it, and hooked up a Sega Genesis emulator. The results are not what we’d call “ideal,” but as the hacker says, “It is playable.” Sure, technically speaking, the on-screen virtual buttons allow interaction with Sonic and his buddy Tails, but whether it’s any fun at all is another question altogether. “ndncnbvcuyuys” seems to have a penchant for the impossibly fast games on touch-based e-readers, as he got PlayStation 1’s WipeOut running on the Nook Simple Touch just a few weeks back. Might we suggest a PlayStation Vita instead?
