Apple patents a method to refine curved glass for displays and beyond

The curved screens of Samsung’s Nexus S and Galaxy Nexus helped them stand out in the smartphone crowd, but it’s clearer than ever that the company doesn’t have a lock on the idea. Apple is exploring the concept as well: it just received a patent for a technique that molds thin glass into bent or curved shapes without a drawn-out process or using risky chemicals. By having alignment tools shift along with hotter temperatures during a glass slumping process, where the material shapes itself around a mold, Apple can bend glass without any interference — leading to curvy surfaces that are both quicker to make and higher quality. A patent doesn’t mean that we’ll see a curved iPhone in the immediate future, though. Apple leaves its options open and suggests that anything from mice to TVs could be candidates, should the company take action at all. If the patent ever applies to real-world products, however, we’ll have an inkling as to how the bendy shapes came to be.

‘Twas the night before…

'Twas the night before

‘Twas the night before Christmas and all through the house
Not a gadget was running, not even a mouse.
Updates were posted and tweeted with care
In hope that minutiae would be widely shared.

The children were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of Galaxies danced in their heads.
Smartphones and tablets and consoles for gaming,
Their daydreams and night reveries were inflaming.

For Christmas should not be in sad disconnection
From touchscreens and 4G and pixel perfection.
Mini or maxi is not much the point,
But latest and greatest does not disappoint.

DIY Google Project Glass: I Am Locutus of Nerd!

Even though people haven’t been that hyped up about Google’s Project Glass of late, some technophiles still couldn’t wait and decided to hack together their own augmented reality eyewear. This particular design makes you look like some sort of space pirate.

Gregory McRoberts designed his augmented reality specs to look like an angry eyepatch. Apart from serving as a cool disguise for Halloween, it was designed as a aid for the visually impaired. Instead of an LCD screen to show information, the patch uses a simple set of glowing LEDs to translate temperature and distance information to the wearer, helping provide depth and safety cues to those without 3D vision.

A flashing green LED will blink faster or slower depending on whether an object is closer or farther away. Blue LEDs will shift to red if an object or a room is above 80 degrees Fahrenheit.

Gregory also suggests that the device could be fitted with vibration motors to provide similar feedback to the totally blind.

Clink! Glass: Solve a Puzzle While You’re Drunk

Remember those old plastic maze games with the little ball in them? You know, the type where you had to carefully move them around until the ball landed in the little divot? Well you can now relive this childhood memory while you’re three sheets to the wind, thanks to the Clink! Glass.

This blown-glass rocks glass holds 10 ounces of your favorite beverage, and has a rudimentary ball maze built into the bottom to keep you occupied while you nurse your cocktail. This version has two balls you need to get into the little grooves, and looks like it might be tricky even if you’re completely sober.

The Clink! Glass is available over at Perpetual Kid for $19.99(USD). Whisky not included.

Master Chief Stained Glass is a Masterpiece of Halo Fan Art

Stained glass seems to be having some sort of a geeky renaissance period. So why shouldn’t Halo get in on the colored translucent glass action? Well, okay then…

master chief stained glass 1

This impeccably detailed Master Chief stained glass window was made by Evan Daniels of Martian Glass Works. It’s just about perfect. The only thing it’s missing is a little glowing blue Cortana floating around and guiding Chief’s way as he takes on the Covenant and countless other nasties.

Measuring in at 50″(H) x 40″(W) and made up out of about 200 pieces of glass, it’s an impressive feat for sure. It took Evan about 70 hours to construct. Of course, all of that work is bound to be worth something, and the big glass Chief is selling for a whopping $3000(USD). But even if you can’t afford it, you should pop on over to Etsy and admire it from afar.

VITREO Protects Your iPad Glass with More Glass

I’m here to tell you if you don’t have some sort of screen protection on your iPad, it’s only a matter of time before you end up with little scratches all over it. Scratches on the screen are annoying too because after a while you can pretty much only see scratches when you look at the screen. Many screen protectors out there are little pieces of film that stick to the screen surface.

The problem with those sticky adhesive films is that over time they tend to bubble and look crappy. Seidio has unveiled a new screen protector that shouldn’t have such problems. The screen protector is called VITREO and it’s a piece of tempered glass that fits over the entire surface of your iPad, while still allowing usage of the touchscreen. The glass has a hardness rating of 9H meaning that it should withstand both scratches and drops, while protecting the underlying screen of your tablet.

The sheet of glass sticks to the surface of your tablet using a silicone adhesive. That adhesive promises to be removable without leaving residue behind if you want to take it off your tablet. The VITREO screen protector is available right now for $69.95, and is available for the iPad third and fourth-generation as well as the iPad 2.

Stormtrooper Stained Glass: If the Empire Had a Church

While I never figured Darth Vader to be a man of faith, he definitely had enough of an ego to start his own church – but instead of religious figures and scenes on the stained glass, he’d much more likely go with something like this.

stormtrooper stained glass

Yep, that’s a stormtrooper stained glass window, and Vader would line the walls of his church with an army of these, and perhaps images of the Death Star and the extermination of Alderaan.

This awesome stained glass window was made by artist Donna Terraza, and measures a substantial 22.5″ by 43.5″, so it’s almost life-sized. And before you go complaining about the helmet design, this thing is based on CC-1138 (aka Clone Marshal Commander Bacara) – who looked exactly like this.

Can you imagine if you had a glass front door, and installed this thing behind the glass? How cool would that be? I bet you’d never get unwanted solicitors coming to your front door again.

The window shown here has already been sold, but you can order one custom made over on Etsy for $710(USD). You hear that, Lord Vader?

Iron Man Stained Glass: World’s Most Fragile Superhero

Tony Stark is only as tough as he is because of his Iron Man armor. That’s why it’s made out of space age material, not glass. If you want to see the Iron Man armor made from glass, here it is. Sneeze wrong and it all shatters like Tony Stark’s sobriety.

This piece of glass shows off Iron Man’s armor in amazing detail. Seeing the light hit the armor just makes Iron man seem… holy somehow. This amazing piece of stained glass art comes from artist R. Evan Daniels of Martian Glass Works, who says that it’s the most complicated work he’s created yet.

It has 334 pieces of glass and took over 100 hours to build. It measures 9.5 square feet, so he will need to build a special crate just to ship it to you. That is, if you have the $4,500(USD) necessary to bring it home. Tony Stark should be able to afford that with no problem.

Kingmax intros UI05 USB flash drive with glass ceiling, lets you see memory storage 'in action'

If you ever thought the world of flash storage was, well, a little pedestrian, then you’ve clearly never met Kingmax. The memory-maker likes to spice things up with world firsts, and exhibits an enthusiasm for the utilitarian product that can only be admired. The latest innovation? A USB drive with a glass ceiling. The UI-05, as it is known, lets you peer directly at the chip that holds your data, while keeping it waterproof and dust-proof, all in 8, 16 and 32GB denominations. Even better for you, that enthusiasm is backed up by pure faith, with the metal-cased pen drive easing nerves with a (not world first) five-year warranty. What Kingmax didn’t let us see, however, was price and availability. There’s a close-up shot right after the break, or you can jump to the source for more info.

Memorize Pi While You Drink, Cook and Eat

Mathematics geeks will often use the number of digits of Pi they can remember as a measure of pride. While I might be able to get as far as 3.141592653589793, that’s about where I lose it. But with these special drinking glasses, I bet I’d be able to recite 100 digits in no time.

TheUncommonGreen’s Pi series is printed several hundred digits of the mathematical constant – which for those of you who flunked math class is the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter. Duh.

There’s a Pi pint glass ($36/pair), a Pi rocks glass ($36/pair) and a Pi shot glass ($20/each), so you can even memorize digits while you get drunk. I’m not sure how much those Pi coasters go for, though. And if you want to keep working on your math while you cook dinner, there’s a matching Pi kitchen towel.

And when your guests arrive, you can help them learn Pi too, while they cut the cheese on this Pi plate ($55).

But my favorite of the Pi series won’t help me memorize its digits at all – but it will help me drink more beer – and that’s the Pi bottle opener ($45).
