These Glitch Coats Will Hurt Your Eyes

Thank God we don’t see too many glitches in our technology these days. Visual glitches can be annoying, frustrating and often brightly blinding. Which is how I would describe these coats.

These coats are born from an unholy alliance between Japanese designers Nukeme and Ucnv. They’re available with either a black or white coat and an all-over glitch pattern that might make you lose your lunch if you stare at it too long.

On the upside, each is handmade and ships to you from beautiful Toyko. It will cost you about $295(USD) to look like a walking glitch. Too bad these coats don’t come with recordings of audio distortion to go along with them.

Pokémon X & Y Lumiose City Save Error: Pokémon-Type Bug

Attention Pokémon X & Y players! Avoid saving in Lumiose City! Nintendo has officially acknowledged a bug in the two new Nintendo 3DS games. The bug may occur if you save in the outermost circular road (see image below) in Lumiose City and then power off your 3DS or 2DS. The result is nothing less than a permanently corrupted save file.

Skip to about 1:20 in YouTuber NerdCubed’s video below to see the bug in action. And the game in inaction.

If your save file was corrupted this way, you can either just restart the game or wait for Nintendo’s remedy, which will be an application that will be available from the eShop. The company didn’t say when they will release it though. There are a couple of unofficial tips to fix the bug, but don’t take my word for these. The first one is to load your save file, then press the “Home” button repeatedly as the screen turns black and music starts to play. The second unofficial remedy is to remove your SD card from your Nintendo 3DS, then boot up the game without the card. Again, those are unofficial methods, but I think they’re safe enough to try on your own.

Verizon Wireless website reportedly allowing users to keep unlimited data plans while upgrading

Verizon Wireless website reportedly allowing users to keep unlimited data plans while upgrading

Apparently, now is the time to upgrade your Verizon phone if you want to keep your grandfathered unlimited data plan in tact. According to tips we’ve received, along with reports from Droid-Life and Android Central, the aforementioned type of users are not being forced into a tiered Max data plan during the upgrade process. There doesn’t seem to be any bit of trickery required to make it happen either — folks just go through usual upgrade motions to get a brand new phone on subsidy, and come out with an order confirmation that has all-you-can-eat data still onboard (see above). We’ve reached out to Verizon to find out whether this is an issue with its website or a shift in policy, and will post an update if we hear more. Let us know your results if you’re brave enough to try it out.

iOS 7 bug enables user to bypass lockscreen, send emails and status updates (update: Apple response)

iOS 7 bug enables user to bypass lockscreen, send emails and status updates

The moment operating systems become available to the public is also the moment millions of people have the opportunity to hunt around and find bugs. And, it appears that at least one rather critical bug has already been discovered in iOS 7. A keen-eyed user found a way to bypass the passcode-protected lockscreen and gain access to the device’s photos app, giving him the ability to hijack the email or social network account associated with that device. Essentially, you access the alarm clock through Control Center, make your way into the multitasking menu and head into the camera app from there. We’ve embedded the video evidence below, just in case you’re interested in trying it out for yourself; we tested it out using an iPhone 5s running iOS 7.0.1, and were able to duplicate the user’s claims.

This isn’t the first time we’ve seen an iOS bug capable of bypassing your lockscreen and compromising the security of your device, and Apple typically squashes those bugs with patches; the last one took a month, however, so we’d like to see an update to iOS 7.0.2 a bit sooner than that. While you wait, the easiest way to avoid this concern is to disable the ability to access Control Center from the lockscreen (this can be found in the settings).

[Thanks, @vbarraquito!]

Update: Apple tells AllThingsD that it’s aware of the bug, and that it’s working on a fix.

Glitch Textiles: Your Blanket Was Not Shut Down Properly

If you liked Benjamin Berg’s glitch art throw pillows, check out Phillip Stearn’s Glitch Textiles. With the help of professional knitters and weavers, Stearns turns patterns generated from broken digital cameras and binary files into blankets and tapestries.

According to Fast Co. Design, Stearns makes the patterns by rewiring digital cameras and by “custom-made data visualization software, which translates raw binary data into images.”

iOS Maps Atrocities? Nah, These Are Works of Art

We’re all familiar with the, uh, pitfalls of Apple’s iOS Maps app. But Peder Norrby, the founder of a Stockholm-based tech company called Trapcode, has managed to capture some of the most bizarre 3D mapping glitches in high definition—turning them into lovely, surreal vignettes.

American Airlines Flights Resume After Computer Glitch

American Airlines Flights Resume After Computer GlitchEarlier yesterday, we did talk about how flights of American Airlines were grounded because of a computer problem, and this led to tens of thousands of passengers being stranded on airports with no way of arriving at their destinations on time – insurance companies would definitely balk at the amount of payout that they would need to make. Good to know what whatever issues American Airlines suffered with their computers, all of those have been fixed, and American Airlines tweeted late yesterday, “Our systems have been fully restored, however we expect continued delays & cancellations. More details: on.fb.me/XPTaiC”

The outage lasted for more than 4 hours, and while that might not sound like too long a wait, it has done plenty of damage to the reservations of the every passenger who decided to fly with American Airlines today. It goes without saying that the delays will last for many more hours down the road, and a system-wide ground delay is said to be in effect until 5PM ET yesterday. At the very least, American Airlines were rather chatty over social networking channels like Twitter and Facebook, so at least that part of their PR exercise is covered. Were you affected by this computer glitch?

Glitch Throw Pillows: Don’t Worry, Your Video Card is Fine

Like the Blue Screen of Death, brightly colored pixelated display glitches are a familiar sight to computer users with failing hardware or buggy software. We’re seeing less and less of it though; if you’ve grown fond of it take a good look at these throw pillows made by Benjamin Berg aka Stallio.

I’m not sure if Berg based the designs on actual glitches or if he just ingests bath salts through his eyes then wilds out on Photoshop.

Verizon iPhone 5 update fixes mobile data use on WiFi bug

Verizon iPhone 5 update fixes mobile data use on WiFi bug

Verizon customers received an unexpected bonus when they opted for the latest iPhone, but in an unfortunate case of carrier Karma, the necessary sacrifice was their mobile data. An update has been issued to fix a Verizon-specific bug which, “under certain circumstances,” used cellular data when connected to WiFi. To plug the potential leak, you’ll need to head to the About screen in the phone’s Settings, General menu, where you should find a update prompt. Install, then — importantly — reboot, and if “Verizon 13.1” shows as your carrier in that same About tab, you know you’re safe. We’d also recommend checking your data allowance with crossed fingers — for what use is LTE if you’ve already hit your monthly cap?
