NOOK GlowLight Has A Hidden Browser

Don’t you just love Easter Eggs? I am not referring to the kind where you are able to eat after peeling away at the beautifully painted shell, but rather, the kind of surprises that developers put in their software or work to surprise users upon its discovery. GTA 5 has nearly 30 of those, while Google Maps too, has a Tardis Easter Egg. When it comes to the Barnes & Noble NOOK GlowLight, it might not seem as though it is capable of browsing the Internet with a browser, but if you know where to look, one browser has been tucked away in the GlowLight, although a little bit of work is required to uncover it.

This is not the first time that B&N has shipped a NOOK eReader with a hidden web browser, and we are not quite sure whether it will be the last, either. It is there to help you locate something on the Internet should you happen to have issues with linking up your NOOK to a Google account. On the bright side, you can also tap a few buttons to check out a Google search box that can then be used to perform a search on the web. Far from being a fully functional web browser, you will not find any Back button or download manager, but hey, something is better than nothing, right? Enjoy the video above of the NOOK GlowLight browser trick.

IRL: Nook Simple Touch with GlowLight and the PowerPlant portable battery pack

Welcome to IRL, an ongoing feature where we talk about the gadgets, apps and toys we’re using in real life and take a second look at products that already got the formal review treatment.

Does our own self-professed book collector Dan Cooper need an e-reader? No, but he might get one anyway. And do you need a portable charger with 3.6 times the capacity of an iPhone 5? Yes, or at least that’s what Darren tells us.

Nook Simple Touch with GlowLight gets another $20 price drop, undercuts competition

Looking for a new e-reader? Barnes & Noble is trying to get your attention. The bookseller has knocked a solid $20 off the price of its Nook Simple Touch with GlowLight reader, underselling its competitors by the same amount. This is actually the device’s second major price reduction– the first drop, late last year, matched its price to Amazon’s Kindle Paperwhite. Although price cuts often lead up to a device refresh, earlier this year Barnes & Noble was rumored to be stepping back from new hardware launches. Either way, we won’t scoff at a cheaper Nook, considering how versatile it can be with a little encouragement.

Barnes & Noble Cuts GlowLight Nook Price To $119 As Amazon Prepares To Ship Its Paperwhite Kindles

    glowlight

Amazon’s shiny new Kindle Paperwhite will start trickling out of the company’s myriad warehouses in short order, but it seems e-reading rival Barnes & Noble won’t let Amazon set foot in the illuminated e-reader market unanswered.

To that end, B&N has announced that it has cut the price of its conceptually similar Nook SimpleTouch with GlowLight from $139 to $119 — the same price as Amazon’s ad-supported Paperwhite model.

It’s easy to look at the move as a knee-jerk reaction to Amazon’s impending Paperwhite Kindle launch, but Barnes & Noble claims it’s anything but. Apparently, the price cut has been in the works for “months” now as part of the company’s planning, though I’ve got to wonder if Amazon’s announcement earlier this month may have helped force B&N’s hand a bit. After all, it has gotten to be pretty good at using price cuts to try and disrupt some of Amazon’s thunder — as Kindle Fire HD rumors picked up steam last August, B&N cut the prices of its Nook Tablet line. Of course, Barnes now has some neat new tablets to push, as we head into the holidays, but the move at least keeps those older tablets in competition with Amazon’s earlier Fire.

B&N may have just made the cut official, but a few retailers were perhaps a bit too quick to pull the trigger. Target and Walmart (two companies that have coincidentally dropped Amazon’s e-readers from their inventory) both acknowledged the Glowlight-enabled Nook’s updated price yesterday. Now the B&N site reflects that pricing change as well, and just in time — the country’s annual bout of holiday shopping hysteria is just around the corner, and this move toward pricing parity should force consumers to weigh their e-reading options based on each device’s merits rather than which would hurt their wallets the least.

Barnes & Noble Nook lands in Currys, PC World and Sainsbury’s stores, furthers the UK conquest

    Barnes and Noble Nook Glowlight

Barnes & Noble must want no corner of Britain untouched by Nooks. Following its planned bookstore invasion, the American company is bringing both the Nook Simple Touch and its GlowLight cousin to Sainsbury’s and Waitrose supermarkets, as well as Dixons Retail-owned chains Currys and PC World. When the e-readers arrive at the outlets’ respective online and retail stores from early October onwards, they’ll bring the Nook’s reach to nearly 2,000 UK sales points — not quite ubiquitous coverage, but more than double what we saw in our most recent check. About all that’s left is to offer the Android tablets that have been conspicuously missing from Barnes & Noble’s initial expansion strategy.

DNP! Barnes and Noble hit the UK, launches Nook Simple Touch, Glowlight and a pair of HD tablets

American bookseller Barnes and Noble is planning to broaden its horizons with a little international travel. At the same time the Kindle Fire HD makes its first tentative steps across the pond, the company behind the Nook has appointed Patrick Rouvillois to spearhead its global domination — starting in the UK. As such, it’s releasing the Nook Simple Touch, Simple Touch with Glowlight and both of its new HD tablets this holiday season to win the hearts and minds of cynical Brits. If you’re a Brit (cynical or otherwise) and curious whether Jeff Bezos and chums have something to worry about (hint: most probably) then join us after the break.
