Meet the Gold Man of Pimpri: Smart Investor or Foolish Romantic?

I don’t know if I should be impressed by Datta Phuge’s foresight or laugh at his naivete. But here he is, Mr. Datta Phuge aka the ‘Gold Man of Pimpri,’ who hails from the Indian city of Pimpri-Chinchwad. Why the ‘Gold Man of Pimpri,’ you might ask? Because of the custom-made and hella expensive 22-karat gold shirt that he had made and now wears wherever he goes.

Gold Shirt GuyI kid you not. Phuge allegedly had the shirt made both as an investment and as something that he hopes will attract the ladies. The shirt took a team of 15 goldsmiths two weeks to make, working 16 hours a day creating and weaving the gold threads.

Regarding the price, it turns out that there’s some confusion as to the actual value of the shirt, with some sources reporting that it’s worth $230,000 and others saying that it’s priced at $23,000. Either way, we think that’s an excessive amount to spend on a mere shirt. Especially one that looks as ridiculous as the one Phuge is wearing proudly in the picture.

Phuge was quoted as saying: “I know I am not the best looking man in the world but surely no woman could fail to be dazzled by this shirt?”

He doesn’t sound like he knows much about women, does he?

Zelda Wedding Rings: A Link to Your Soulmate

If you’re thinking about getting married, and both you and your significant other are into classic video games, then I can’t think of anything better than these Zelda wedding bands as a symbol of your undying commitment to love, honor, and cherish one another (and occasionally dust off the old NES console together.)

zelda wedding rings

Even if your names aren’t Link and Zelda, you’ll still want to wear these rings. They’re actually quite elegant from the outside, and only those in the know will realize the meaning of the Triforce on them. One of them is inscribed with “It’s Dangerous” and the other with “To Go Alone.” Awwwwww. That’s so sweet, I think I just threw up a little bit in my mouth. But seriously, these rings are pretty swell.

These were custom made by Toronto jewelry artist Zsolt Székely. They don’t list the pricing for these exact rings on their website, but says that their rings range from $295 for sterling silver designs up to $5000 and beyond for precious metals and diamonds. That’s a whole lot of rupees if you ask me, but well worth the price for something you’ll both cherish for years to come.

Solid Gold LEGO Brick Costs Almost $15,000

If you’ve recently won the Powerball jackpot and don’t know what to blow your money on, consider this solid gold LEGO brick that will cost you $14,449.99(USD). It’s an official building piece from LEGO, so it isn’t just some knockoff.
Gold Lego
This brick is 25.65g of 14K gold and it is the same size and shape as the original 2×4 LEGO brick. It’s just worth a heck of a lot more. These bricks were given to LEGO employees that had 25 years of employment at the Hohenwestedt, Germany factory from about 1979-1981, when gold wasn’t worth as much.

This one is for sale if you have the money to spare and need some bling added to your LEGO creations. At least it comes with a nice box to store it in.

The World’s Most Expensive Lego Is A $14,500 Solid Gold Brick

With all the insane, high tech Lego contraptions running around these days, it’s easy to overlook the beauty in a single, elemental brick — unless that element is solid, 14-carat gold. More »

Sony coats Xperia P in 24-carat gold, keeps up tradition of so-so phones in luxury shells

Sony coats Xperia P in 24carat gold, keeps up tradition of soso phones in luxury shells

Outside of custom projects, the cardinal rule for draping phones in exotic materials is that they must never, ever be truly high end devices: at best, they should involve mid-tier hardware that could be eclipsed by a garden-variety smartphone at a fraction of the price. Sony’s maintaining that all too time-honored tradition by producing a gold-coated, 24-carat version of… the Xperia P. Yes, rather than spruce up a flagship like the James Bond-approved Xperia T, Sony has instead given the luxury treatment to a smartphone with a strictly middling 4-inch display and dual-core 1GHz processor. In fairness, the company sees this as an experiment rather than a Vertu-like business model, with the intent strictly to emphasize the unibody design. A maximum 15 have been built as a result — and rather than count on impulse purchases from oligarchs, Sony hints that it’s offering at least some of its gold Xperia P stock to followers on Facebook. As long as there’s no pretenses of living the high life with what’s really a very ordinary phone underneath, we’re satisfied.

Sony offers Limited 24K Gold Edition Xperia P as competition swag

Sony offers Limited 24K Gold Edition Xperia P as competition swag

Gold-caked gadgets are usually left to luxury manufacturers and modders, but now Sony is offering a slice of the high life with its “Limited 24K Gold Edition” Xperia P. The indulgent handset was spotted on the Facebook page of Sony Sweden, where one is being offered as a competition prize (sorry folks, it’s only local to Nordic countries). We have no idea whether this is a solitary handset, or if Sony plans to release a limited run for general consumers. All we do know is one of these guys will definitely silence that friend who insists on waving around their James Bond-edition Xperia at every opportunity.

3D Printed Ark of the Covenant: Raiders of the Lost Tech

Raiders of the Lost Ark is still one of my favorite movies of all time, and at the center of that film was the quest for the mysterious lost Ark of the Covenant. Now, you can own your own miniature version of the Ark, intricately crafted using 3D printing technology.

3d printed ark covenant

This mini version of the Ark was created using a 3D printer, and is made from 10-karat gold-plated stainless steel. It’s amazingly detailed, with every little nook and cranny down to the winged creatures on the top. It was made by Canadian artist Matthew C. of Geomatrix Studio, and measures 7.8″(L) x 4″(W) x 3.4″(H).

Due to the gold-plating, it’s very expensive, selling for $3400 Canadian Dollars (~$3514 USD). However, Matthew will also take special orders for the Ark in Antique Bronze or stainless steel, with prices starting at $800 Canadian (~$805 USD). That’s still way less expensive and dangerous than traveling around the world on a quest against a bunch of hateful Nazis. Speaking of which, I wonder if this thing would melt the faces off of evil action figures.

Scientists Have Changed The Color of Gold

The pattern embossed on the gold’s surface

Anodizing’s in the tech news world today because Apple (and other gadget makers) are realizing it’s a great way to make portable devices more durable and more attractive. However, the anodizing process involves coating metal with a thin layer of colored aluminum oxide: basically, it’s not changing the actual color of the metal. Researchers from the university of Southhampton in the UK announced today that they actually changed the color of gold by scuffing up its surface. It’s much more precise than that, but it does use a pattern of tiny indentations or embossments alters the way the metal absorbs and reflects light, which makes it look like different colors. Stargate Wedding Ring Spins You into a Whole New World

I love sci-fi, but I just never understood all of the hype about the Stargate franchise. I’m more a Star Trek or Babylon 5 kind of guy. Sure, it’s ok. I don’t think it’s great sci-fi. (No throwing stuff at me.) That’s probably why I wasn’t invited to any Stargate themed weddings.

stargate ring

The Chapa’ai ring you see here was conceived by Seattle-based company Wedding Band Designs. The coolest feature is that the inner ring spins like a real stargate, without the need for visual effects. If you still have Flash running on your computer, you can even check it out in action below:

It’s made from 14K white gold with the chevrons made from 18K yellow gold. The Chapa’ai ring is available as a custom piece only, and you’ll need to contact Wedding Band Designs for a price quote.

It’s an appropriate ring for marriage since you are certainly stepping into a strange new world.
