Google Hangouts SMS support on Android is no longer a dream. Vic Gundotra announced a number of improvements that have been made to Hangouts, today. Improvements include support for SMS, location sharing and animated GIFs. It was previously rumored that support for SMS messages in Hangouts will come with Android 4.4 KitKat, but evidently Google doesn’t want us to keep waiting. Unfortunately, Google Voice still hasn’t been integrated in the Android app. Nevertheless, users will no longer need to use the stock SMS app, texts will go through Hangouts exactly the way they do through the stock app. Location can be shared through just one touch of a button that’s placed beside the one used to share photos.

Google has also made some improvements to Hangouts apart from its mobile app. Auto enhance has been added to video calls, the feature automatically adjusts contrast and brightness levels to provide clear video. Moreover, all video calls made through Hangouts will be in HD, regardless of the mobile or desktop device being used. Hangouts on Air receives a couple of updates as well. Once a broadcast is scheduled, a dedicated landing page is created that is integrated with Google+ events, and it lists RSVPs and even includes a countdown timer. Pre-show Q&A sessions and trailers can even be run. Some changes have been made to the user interface as well, which now lets hosts adjust audio or even kick people from the session. The updated Google Hangouts app will be rolled out over the next few days, whereas updates to Hangouts on Air will take several weeks to go live.

New screenshots and an accompanying report claim that the next Google Hangouts for Android update, version 1.3, will bring new communication abilities. Hangouts is finally expected to get SMS and MMS integration. Up till now it has only worked to unify Google+ Messenger and Google Talk, there was no native ability in Hangouts to send messages through SMS. Google has already promised that SMS integration will come to Hangouts, so its no longer a matter of if it will happen, only of when its actually going to drop. No word as yet on when the updated app will be available for Android devices.

Fans of Google’s social networking service, Google+, were probably pretty stoked to hear the company was rolling out some major changes to the service earlier this year that would makes changes to its layout, photos and incorporation of Hangouts. Today, Google is announcing it’s adding some new features to Google+ for Android

Google+ for Android will come with a total of five new features, one of which is removing Messenger support within the application in favor of Hangouts. The reason for its removal is due to Messenger working across platforms as well as the Web, making Messenger completely obsolete.

Aside from the removal of Messenger to make way for Hangouts, the new Google+ for Android will allow users to switch accounts and pages, will fully support Google Apps for Business and will allow photos and videos stored in Google Drive to be available for use. Location sharing is also being incorporated in today’s update, which should make former Google Latitude users extremely happy.

Google+ Android users can proceed to Google Play to update their application in order to take advantage of today’s new updates. Considering the Google+ Android app will now support Hangouts, we think it’s probably in your best interest to do so right away.
