Google Maps adds NYC subway service alerts

Google has been very busy adding new features to its Google Maps service over the last several months. The latest addition to the service has been announced this week and brings something that visitors and New York City locals will really appreciate to Google Maps directions. Google Maps now has integrated messages about subway service alerts.

That means if your Google Maps directions send you to a subway to get to your destination, and the particular subway platform suggested has some sort of service alert, those alerts will be offered right in the app or on the driving directions page. That means you’ll no longer show up at a platform only to discover that the train is skipping your platform for some reason on that particular day.

Google says the relevant subway alerts will be integrated directly into the step-by-step directions offered to get you to your location. The new service covers any of the 468 New York City subway stations labeled on Google Maps. Subway station alerts are available online via maps.google.com and on the Google Maps for Mobile Android application.

The alerts will allow the user to adjust their travel by choosing another suggested route or changing the departure time. This update should prove very useful for many people during the summertime travel season. Google says that it will continue to roll out new features and to add new cities to Google Maps globally.

Google Maps Mercifully Now Shows NYC Subway Alerts [Google Maps]

Google wants to relieve New Yorkers of one of the Subway’s biggest annoyances: Planned service changes you didn’t know about. Now, whenever you click on a Subway station in Google Maps, the information box that pops up will display detailed service advisories like the ones the MTA posts on its website and in stations. The new alerts will also show up when you search for transit directions in Google Maps. There’s nothing worse than realizing a train is running a weird schedule when you’re already late and can’t do anything about it. Bless you Google. Now please roll this feature out for the rest of America. More »

Google brings NYC subway alerts to Maps, makes public transit a little more bearable

Google brings NYC subway alerts to maps, makes public transit a little more bearable

Google has offered up New York City subway information via Maps for some time now, but as anyone who’s navigated the 100-plus-year-old transit system will happily tell / complain to you, such information is only so useful without info on the requisite service changes — a lot of work goes into maintaining something that old. Google’s upping its game by bringing services changes to Maps for Android and its web-based counterpart. Clicking on one of the 468 stations in Maps will bring up relevant maintenance information, as well as step-by-step instructions for navigating around it. Until Boingo rolls out WiFi to more stations, however, you might want to check your status before going underground.

Google Maps gets up close with HQ Olympics tour

Those residing on foreign shores hoping to experience a piece of England without buying an expensive plane ticket can do so with new high-resolution images courtesy of Google Maps. Google has added a couple of new features to Maps, including the ability to use Street View on Downing Street. Users can now peruse the outside of number ten, the famous residence of the country’s prime ministers, and Google has also started to roll out new high resolution map images for various countries across the world.

Google has added high-resolution images for 25 cities and around 72 regions. That includes the Olympic Village towards the east of London, plus a spectacular view of Bryce Canyon in Utah. Not only that, but the company has added new 45 degree angles for 28 cities. The update adds 21 cities in the United States, plus 7 additional countries across the world.

New cities include Munich, Chicago, and Springfield Illinois, with users able to zoom in on various landmarks at a 45 degree angle. Google highlights the Frauenkirche in Munich, and the famous Trump Tower in Chicago. A full list of cities and regions that have received updates is available on Google’s website.

The company says that the new updates have rolled out to Google Maps and Google Earth, and more cities and countries will be added in the future for both high resolution images and 45 degree angles. Google can also notify users of any new updates via email thanks to its Follow Your World app.

PSA: Google’s 3D City View and Tour Guide arrives for Google Earth on iOS today

PSA Googles 3D City View and Tour Guide arrives for Google Earth on iOS today

Google’s 3D City View is now available on iOS. The Google Earth update adds three-dimensional imagery to major locations including Washington D.C, San Francisco and Boston. It’s arriving alongside Tour Guide; select a notable attraction to go straight to it, with accompanying trivia you can bore your friends with later. Sadly 3D maps requires the processing hardware of the iPhone 4S, iPad 2 or the third-generation iPad, but other iOS (4.2 or higher) device users can still get access to Tour Guide. Unsurprisingly, the update’s available via the App Store — but you shouldn’t need a map to find your way there.

Google improves maps for several countries, helps you follow the path well trodden

Google improves maps for several european countries, helps you follow the path well trodden

So it seems the team at Mountain View won’t rest until the whole world is mapped to within an inch of its cartographic life. Good for us though, and especially folk in Croatia, Czech Republic, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Lesotho, Macau, Portugal, San Marino, Singapore and Vatican City. Those nations have had their maps improved to be more detailed and precise. For example, when planning your saunter around Venice’s St. Mark’s Square, you’ll now see the canals better aligned, along with 3D buildings and more detailed labels for places of interest. There’s some more general housekeeping too, with multilingual names available, and clearer distinction between local and major roads. Planning a trip? Just curious? Drop a pin in the source link to discover more.

Google Maps adds panoramic images from Antarctica to Street View

Google Maps just added a whole bunch of 360-degree panoramic images to Street View of some great spots in Antarctica, both inside and out. Among those great spots include places like the South Pole Telescope, Shakleton’s hut, Scott’s hut, Cape Royde Adélie Penguin Rookery and the Ceremonial South Pole. Google Maps had partnered with the Polar Geospatial Center at the University of Minnesota and the New Zealand Antarctic Heritage Trust to make it all happen.

With the release of the new panoramic images on Street View, Google hopes to teach people about the history of exploration in Antarctica, including facts about some of the first people who actually arrived on the continent to study it. ”The goal of these efforts is to provide scientists and travel (or penguin) enthusiasts all over the world with the most accurate, high-resolution data of these important historic locations,” said Alex Starns, technical program manager for Google Street View.

Instead of the usual Google Street View cars and trucks used throughout the rest of the world, Google had to use a lightweight tripod camera with a fisheye lens to take all of the Antarctic images.

Google had initially added images from Antarctica to Street View back in 2010, but they were quite limited. Of course, they still are, in comparison to Street View images from the rest of the world, but at least you can get a bit of a better glimpse of some of the most important places on the ice-covered continent.

The images are now live in Google Maps.

Google has already taken us on a trip to the frigid shores of Antarctica before. Now the search giant is back with even more panoramic images, this time from deeper inside the frozen continent. With help from the Polar Geospatial Center at the University of Minnesota and the New Zealand Antarctic Heritage Trust (not to mention a light-weight tripod and a fisheye lens), Street View can now bring to you the wonders of our most southern land mass. This isn’t a short stroll in the footsteps of penguins either — the ceremonial South Pole and Shackleton’s Hut are among the numerous landmarks that get exposed to Google’s image sensors. Enjoy the quick tour above and the video after the break.
