Outlook.com Android App Update Brings New UI And Features

Outlook.com Android App Update Brings New UI And Features

The Outlook.com Android app was previously updated back in November last year. Today Microsoft has announced a new update for this app, which brings an overhaul for the entire user interface as well as new features. Microsoft says that the overall response to Outlook.com has been very positive, but their Android app was quite behind. They say they’re very excited to take this large step forward, which will give Android users the same look and feel of the e-mail service as they’ve seen on Windows 8 as well as on the web.

Apart from bringing the UI at par with other platforms, the updated Outlook.com Android app comes with a host of new features that greatly enhance user experience. These include filters for unread and flagged mail, threading of conversations and the ability to mark email messages as junk. The updated Outlook.com app can be grabbed right now from Google Play Store. It will be supported by any device running Android firmware version 2.2 or higher. Initial user reviews on the Play Store indicate that the new UI is being appreciated a lot.

Burner App Brings Disposable Phone Numbers For Android Users

Burner is a popular app for the iPhone, it provides users with disposable phone numbers that they can use to make calls or send text messages or receive calls, texts and voicemails. The app comes in handy when the user might want to protect their identity. Surely one can think of the app being used for wrongful purposes as well, but there are advantages. It all depends upon the user. Burner has been available for iPhone for quite a while, today it was finally released for Android.

Burner for Android comes with one free disposable number which can be used for a five minute call or 15 text messages. The number is valid for one day only. When it expires, users can either choose to extend its life or buy additional new numbers via in-app purchases. The base price plan for a disposable number is of $2 which offers a week’s validity, 60 text messages and 20 minutes of calling. It is available for download via Google Play Store. Google Pulled Over 60,000 Low Quality Apps From Play Store In February

Google Pulled Over 60,000 Low Quality Apps From Play Store In February

Getting an app approved on the iTunes App Store is no easy task. Apple has strict guidelines that developers have to follow, or their apps wouldn’t be accepted. This is not the case with Google, who has often been criticized for its rather “open” app ecosystem for Android. Nevertheless Google regularly removes apps that are spam or are non-compliant. The company reportedly removed as much as 60,000 low quality apps in the month of February alone, making it the largest round of low quality app cleanup to date.

Google is a bit different from Apple when it comes to accepting apps. The latter has an army of reviews that check every app to make sure it complies with their guidelines. Google doesn’t do that, rather it scans Play Store after the apps go live. This greatly helps the company to improve its automated spam handling system. Google has a separate section in its policies which says that spam apps will definitely be removed, and developers are given a set of guidelines that they should follow so as to not have their apps branded as spam.

Version 4.0 of Twitter for Android has been released. Being one of the most widely used apps on Google’s mobile platform, a new update is always welcomed. The latest update brings a new UI feel as well as a couple of nice new features. All doesn’t seem to be good though, multiple users have given bad reviews about the new update on Google Play Store. Google’s Play Store Android App May Soon Get Another Facelift

new-google-play-via-droidlife

Google’s been awfully busy these past few weeks, but it seems that between sunsetting Reader (and pissing off most of the Internet in the process) and rolling out new services like Google Keep, the company has been working on a redesigned version of the Google Play Store for Android. That’s what the folks at Droid-Life claim, anyway. They appear to have obtained and installed the unreleased 4.0 version of the Google Play Android app ahead of a wider release.

The Play Store’s current mobile design first rolled out in July 2012, and while Google has seen fit to rebrand and tinker with a few things since then, more than a few bits look essentially the same as they did back then. If this is the real deal (and I strongly suspect that it is), then Google Play is about to get quite a facelift. Gone are the gloomy blacks and dark grays that used to permeate the app. This new version returns to a lighter color scheme that’s highly reminiscent of the old Android Market days. On the whole, the new app also looks much cleaner and more spacious than the Play Store that so many of us have gotten used to.

It’s not hard to see some similarities between the updated Play Store app and the Google Now design — there’s a more pronounced focus on bigger images and italicized text. What’s more, individual app listings are separated into little cards rather than being displayed in a more traditional list, yet another sign that Google’s Play Store developers are cribbing UI flourishes from Google Now. If anything, the unification of design between these two services makes me wonder just how far Google plans to go here. After all, Google Now and the Play Store are cornerstones of the Android experience. It wouldn’t be a huge shock to see the next version of Android take a similar approach to aesthetics.

At this point there’s no firm word on when (or if) this update is slated to go live, but it’s very possible that Google could wait until I/O to officially pull back the curtain on a redesigned Play Store app. In the meantime, major mobile players like Facebook are exploring ways to bypass the Play Store completely and push new updates to users, so here’s hoping Google pushes the update out before others follow suit.

Google Keep Has Now Been Officially Announced

Google Keep Has Now Been Officially Announced

We previously reported that Google Keep was going to be launched soon, today its finally here. The app has been beautifully developed and is now available for download. With everything moving in the digital arena, sticky-notes seem a bit outdated now. They’re great for jotting down that flash of genius idea that you may forget, or even writing down tasks that you need to accomplish. The problem with these notes is that they can be easily misplaced. Here’s where Google Keep comes in. All notes, which can include checklists and photos, are stored in Google Drive and will be synced to all of your devices. Keep can also automatically transcribe voice memos. It can swiftly search through notes as well, and there’s also the ability to archive or delete notes. (more…)

Facebook Testing Silent Updates For Its Android App

Facebook Testing Silent Updates For Its Android App

It appears that Facebook is currently testing a way that circumvents Google Play Store for getting updates of the social network’s Android app. Dubbed ‘silent updates’, they install in the background when the Android device is connected to a Wi-Fi network. This means that users don’t get a notification that a new Facebook app update is available for download from Google Play Store. Instead the update is automatically downloaded and then the user is prompted to install said update. Users who have received these silent updates for the Facebook Android app say that the prompts for installing a silent update are persistent and don’t go away until the update is actually installed.
