Google Maps Navigation now available in Mexico

Android Police noted on Wednesday that Mexico had appeared on the list of countries with Google Maps Navigation support. Soon after, Google announced via @GoogleMexico on Twitter that Maps Navigation is now available for Android in Mexico. Users can grab the beta app via the Google Play Store.

Mexico is one of many countries that have been added to the service in the recent past, joining the likes of France, Germany, Denmark, Hong Kong, and dozens of other locations. The app is currently in beta, something it will remind you of frequently when you go to use it. As many users can attest to, however, it works exceptionally well.

Navigation can be launched by tapping the blue triangle icon, at which point one will be presented with a few different options, including viewing starred locations and adding directions. Directions can be either typed or spoken, something more convenient for those times you need last minute help while behind the driver’s wheel.

The app can be toggled between driving and walking, allowing users to utilize it in a variety of situations. Certain requirements can be specified when getting directions, such as only routes that avoid toll roads or highways. Navigation can also be used to view a map with one’s present location, which is tracked with a blue dot as the user moves around.

Nexus 4 shipping time pushed back to 2013

Yesterday, the LG Nexus 4 returned to the Google Play Store after selling out in just 24 minutes on launch day, and we weren’t surprised in the least to see a flood of prospective Nexus 4 owners quickly overwhelm the Play Store with orders. We were thinking for a moment that the phone would sell out once again, but fast forward to today and the Nexus 4 is still available for purchase. There’s just one little problem: regardless of which Nexus 4 model you order, you’re probably going to have to wait until we’re into 2013 to get it.

At the time of this writing, the Play Store listing for the 16GB Nexus 4 says the phone won’t ship for another 4-5 weeks. That sounds pretty bad, until you flip over to the listing for the 8GB Nexus 4. According to the Play Store, new 8GB Nexus 4 orders will ship in 8-9 weeks. That means if you buy an 8GB Nexus 4 today, you can expect it to ship out around the end of January.

Those wait times are cringe-inducing, but at least Google is still selling the phone. For a few weeks after the phone launched, you couldn’t even order one, and Google’s stock situation was so dire that it had to delay some of the orders made on launch day by three weeks. Who knew that a phone with an excellent price tag and some solid internals would sell so incredibly well?

Indeed, we liked the time we spent with the Nexus 4 quite a bit, so it’s not hard to imagine why it’s in such high demand. If you’ve been thinking of picking up a Nexus 4 now that they’re back in stock, it kind of goes without saying that you should make your decision soon, otherwise it might be spring by the time your order finally ships. Check out our story timeline below for more on the Nexus 4.

Google Now Allows Book Pre-orders On Google Play

Following the recent Google+ integration on Google Play, it seems that the Mountain View-based technology giant is now allowing customers to pre-order books on the Google Play Store. To try out the new feature, simply visit Google Play and click on the Books category. There you will find the “New And Coming Soon” section that basically lists all the books that can be pre-ordered. Then you can complete the order process by tapping the pre-order button.

Customers will be charged upon availability of the book and they can also cancel their pre-orders anytime. This is good news for Android users. First, it’s a sign that Google is starting to experiment with pre-orders on Google Play. Had it been made available during the Nexus 4 debut, people wouldn’t have to go through the tedious ordering process while working their way into the first-come-first-serve business model. You can test the functionality by visiting Google Play. Cheers!

Nexus 4 Google Play Store availability returns this afternoon

This afternoon you’ll find yourself once again racing against the masses to grab that one single perfect next-level smartphone: the LG Nexus 4. This device has been available previously on the Google Play store but was sold out in a matter of hours, while the T-Mobile edition (ever so slightly different in its software build) is also either up for sale right this moment (if you’re lucky) or will be again later this afternoon. Those of you looking for the unlocked model will be able to pick it up from either source, but the T-Mobile unlocked version (exactly the same as the Google Play store version) will cost you $150 USD more – so good luck with Google Play!

The Google Play store caters today to the USA with this set of phones, bringing on both the 8GB and 16GB versions of the smartphone to your loving palms. Notes sent out by Google today made it clear that both versions will be available starting at 12 noon PST on November 27th (that’s today) 2012. How long they’ll last is entirely up to you.

We’ve got a full review of the Nexus 4 in all its internationally lovely glory and will be presenting a slightly different angle later this week – here showing how the T-Mobile universe really keeps the device in its true Nexus form. Also feel free to check out our Nexus 4 tag portal as well as our massive Android portal for all the news surrounding this device and the greater Android environment that you can handle!

Also have a peek at the hands-on video above and up close and personal photos above and below. We’re in with this device for the long run, folks, as Google supports this device, the Nexus 7, and the Nexus 10 as their own personal heroes until the next Nexus wave is released. Let us know if you plan on picking up a $349 16GB iteration of the Nexus 4 or a $299 8GB version of the device today!

Google Play Limiting Nexus 4 Purchases To 2 Per Customer

Now this is interesting. If you’re planning to buy a lot of Nexus 4 smartphones on Google Play for Christmas, you might as well read this report. Apparently Google Play is now limiting the number of Nexus 4 units a user can buy. Not four, not three or one, but two. Just two Nexus 4 units and you’re officially out of luck. Google hasn’t confirmed the limit neither did it gave any explanation.

But perhaps, Google knew that anyone lucky enough to buy more than ten, if not a hundred Nexus 4s, can sell it at a much higher price. No question whether or not it would sell, because the Nexus 4 is one hot Android smartphone. In fact, it’s so hot that the device sold out immediately upon debut. Google even had to cancel its debut in Netherlands and Belgium due to the high demand. In case you missed our Nexus review, you can check it out here.

Google Play reviews now use Google+ name and photo

Google really wants all of the content users of its various services upload and create to use their real name and offer their photograph. Not too long ago Google updated YouTube giving people who upload videos the opportunity to use their Google+ name and profile photo rather than whatever random name they chose when they register for YouTube. Google is now rolling out that more personalized name and photo service to Google Play.

Google is now placing your real name, or at least the name used when you signed up for Google+, and your profile photo for each review you post on the Google Play store. You have to think that this change is at least in part a way to help prevent users from badmouthing apps because they could do so anonymously in the past. The move should also make it easier for other people reading the reviews to trust what people are saying since they can see your photo and know your real name.

The change applies to both web-based and mobile reviews on the Google Play store. If you haven’t made a review on Google Play since this change went into effect, you will be greeted with a message that reads, “From now on, reviews you write will be posted publicly using your Google+ name and picture.”

It seems that using your real name and a picture from your Google+ profile isn’t optional. If you’re the sort that prefers anonymity online, this may not sit well with you. However, I think most honest and rational people won’t have a problem with this change.

Google+ gets integrated into the Google Play store

We’re sure that many developers get frustrated at times thanks to the internet trolls who sometimes leave fake reviews, making negative claims about an app even though they are false. This is partly thanks to the fact that we get to hide behind our internet screen names, but it looks like reviews on Google Play could soon take a serious turn as Google has integrated Google+ into the Google Play store. Basically what this means is that if you wanted to leave a review on an app that you’ve been using, whether positive or negative, you will need to sign in with your Google+ profile and as you can see in the screenshot above, the reviews will now show that it has been reviewed by “A Google user”. We’re not sure if full integration has been implemented, but we expect that similar to YouTube, your real name (or whatever name you’ve listed on your Google+ account) will be revealed, which means that silly and troll-ish reviews will soon come with a real name attached to them, hopefully making reviews a more legit read.

RadioShack offering Samsung Galaxy S III with $50 Google Play gift card

While Black Friday isn’t for another few days, RadioShack is already getting a head start on the deals. Today, they’re offering a Samsung Galaxy S III for only $50, but in return, you’ll get a $50 gift card to the Google Play store. So essentially, it’s like getting a Galaxy S III for free, and you’ll be able to download a ton of paid apps while you’re at it.

If you’re even remotely thinking about buying a Galaxy S III for yourself or even a loved one this holiday season, you should take a peek at the RadioShack deal. It’s essentially a great deal for those who are new to Android, since the $50 Google Play gift card would be great to get new users on the fast track to buying and downloading some cool apps.

The deal is only good on certain carriers, which include AT&T, Verizon, and the Now Network. T-Mobile and US Cellular customers are out of luck on this deal. Of course, you’ll have to sign a new two-year contract in order to get the phone for the $50 price tag, but the Galaxy S III will definitely keep your significant other happy for two years.

On top of the GSIII deal, RadioShack is offering $10 cash back for every $50 spent in its stores and online, so even if you’re not into the Galaxy S III, you may want to see if you can do some of your Christmas shopping at RadioShack if you can. Of course, tons of stores offer similar “cash back” deals year-round, but if there’s something at RadioShack that’s on your shopping list, this may be the best time to get it.

T-Mobile Will Sell the Sold Out Nexus 4 for 200 Bucks Tomorrow

Google already sold out of the off-contract Nexus 4 but T-Mobile told The Verge that they’ll be selling the 16GB Nexus 4 for 200 bucks (with a two-year contract) tomorrow. If you don’t want to tie yourself with a T-Mobile contract, the same phone will cost you $500. Yikes. That’s a steep price bump from the no contract $350 16GB Nexus 4 that was at the Google Play store earlier but if you snooze, you lose money. [The Verge] More »
