Google Play gift cards officially announced, now rolling out to Target, RadioShack and GameStop

Google officially announces Google Play gift cards, now rolling out to Target, Radio Shack and GameStop

We’ve seen hints of them in the Google Play app and some pretty clear evidence of them in the wild, and now Google has finally officially announced the availability of Google Play gift cards. Those are available in $10, $25 and $50 denominations, and will be rolling out to Target, RadioShack and GameStop retail stores in the United States over the next few weeks (no word on availability outside the US just yet). According to Google, they’ll also be available on Walmart.com later this month, but not in Walmart stores for the time being. As you’d expect, the cards can be used to purchase anything on Google Play, including movies, music and books in addition to apps (or in-app items).

Samsung Galaxy S III on Verizon gets one-click bootloader unlock, freedom is just a Google Play away

Samsung Galaxy S III on Verizon receives oneclick bootloader unlock app, freedom is just a Google Play away

We were intrigued to see a bootloader unlock emerge for Verizon’s Galaxy S III variant just this week. Unless you’re the kind for whom a beta is just too… safe, though, the method on offer to date has been a tad cryptic. Dingus on the RootzWiki forums has taken all the danger out of it through EZ-Unlock, an app that reduces most of the process to a single tap. While it does require existing root access, everything else is sorted out; its most recent forms can also re-lock the bootloader if there’s any anxiety about venturing out of bounds. The app is even available through Google Play, which makes unrestricted (if warranty-challenging) firmware just a short hop past the source link.

Nexus 7 returns to Google Play as 3rd parties push accessories

Google has once again fully replenished their supply of ASUS-made Nexus 7 tablets in both 8 and 16GB iterations, with delivery again cut back to 3-5 days on both models. Several times since the launch of this device in both iterations we’ve seen the Google Play store online move shipping times back to weeks instead of days and once or twice run out of stock of one or both tablet sizes entirely. At the moment it appears that Google and ASUS have come to a point where supply has met the demand.

In addition, groups such as DODOcase have begun shipment on accessories like their HARDCOVER case. This case makes the Nexus 7 appear to be a hardcover book and is available in four different colors, red, purple, gray/black, and blue. Also included here is a magnet hidden in the cover so that when the cover is closed, your Nexus 7′s display will be put to sleep!

We’ve also had a peek at the official Nexus 7 case as distributed by Google too – it’s quite simple and not a whole lot of imagination is required to make it work. You’ll not have to worry about dropping your device on gravel anymore should to pick this unit up, that’s for certain. This case is also available on the Google Play store online and shipping is just as quick as the unit itself.

And for those of you that want to grab a Nexus 7 tablet with no cash at all, there’s always an NVIDIA event like the one we’ve got going on right now. All you need to do is tell us what your favorite Tegra-laden device or TegraZone game is and BAM! You’re right in the mix – grab one of three right this second!

Google Play gift cards readied for iTunes attack

It’s time to get physical with Google Play, the online media store where Google sells apps, music, and movies, because the big G has just revealed gift cards for retail. Just like Apple’s mega-popular iTunes Gift Card initiative, Google is bringing on at least two cards to the show, prepping them for the likes of Target, Best Buy, Fry’s, and retail locations across the United States. Google has not yet officially let it be known that these cards exist, but there they are, plain as day.

The photo you see above comes from a source who would not say where they worked, of course, but they were likely behind the scenes this week, with images sent to Android Central. By the look of the floor below the cards, our money is on Target. Also included in this lovely rain of gift card madness is a bit of software revealed by the Android Police – inside the Google Play store app on an Android smartphone, they discovered a Google Play balance interface. With “Gift card code” plain to see here, there’s little doubt that the cards will be coming soon.

Now what we wonder about is how this will work with the few physical objects in the store. Will we be able to purchase the Galaxy Nexus, the Nexus 7, and accessories with these cards? Or will we be limited to purchasing music, movies, and apps? Another question we’d like to ask is how your Google Play balance will work with your greater Google Wallet. As the two are connected – somewhat – here as the NFC craze continues to explode, will these gift cards be able to be translated in to non-Google Play cash?

Perhaps we’d like to use our Google Play gift cards at Starbucks? It might not be so difficult as all that – Google Play gift cards will likely be popping up right here at the start of the school season with plenty of time for troubleshooting and gaining a foothold before winter. Once the holiday season begins near the end of this year, Google will be well recognized as an alternative for those that would normally just buy a relative or friend an iTunes card. Watch out, Apple!

Google Play gift cards show up for real, come in $10 and $25 flavors

Google Play gift cards show up for real, come in $10 and $25 flavors

Remember that Google Play gift card support we told you about just this morning? Well now things got real. Literally. The pic above shows one of the shrink-wrapped critters in a $25 denomination. Android Central claims they were sent a few different pictures, showing $10 varieties also — and as we can see from the box — they’re good for music, movies, books, apps and (mysteriously) “more.” So if you’re after that hot new game, now’s about the time to start dropping hints to your nearest and dearest.

Google Play gets ready for gift cards and wishlist

Sometimes the things that Android users really want as gifts aren’t available down at the local retail store. For lot users, birthdays and holidays are the perfect time to ask for the digital goods they want for their Android tablet or smartphone. The problem is that as of now Google Play doesn’t offer things such as gift cards or a wishlist leaving you to ask for money.

A new version of the APK for the Google Play Store, version 3.8.15, started rollout to Android devices recently. Android Police reports that while the new APK looked exactly like the old APK, it had gained about 300 kB of code. After some digging to determine what that extra code was for, we learned that two new features are coming that I’m sure many people have been wishing for.

The new APK code points to Google Play finally adding redeemable gift cards. You can see in the screenshots that under the redeem heading is a space for a gift card code. Also noted in the new menu list is the My Wishlist feature. The wishlist gives the user the ability to add apps, books, TV shows, movies, music, and magazines.

To add content to the wishlist, when the user lands on an app they want there’s a checkbox that would include the app in your wishlist. There are still details I’d like to know about the wishlist. For instance, can you share the wish list with friends allowing them to buy you gift cards for a specific amount? I also wonder if the wishlist can be added as a shopping cart later.

Updated Google Play app reveals gift card support, wish list coming soon?

Updated Google Play app reveals gift card support, wish list coming soon

If the images and link settings Android Police has dug up from the most recent (v3.8.15) Google Play APK that’s rolling out are correct, we could see a coupe more features coming to the Android app and media store soon. First up are very fleshed out menus for the redemption of Play Store gift cards, perfect for users that aren’t enthused about putting their credit card info out there and would rather purchase a few bucks prepaid and then spend them as they will. Also contained within the APK but not activated or accessible by default is some sort of wish list functionality. Hit the source link for all the images and screens that have been found so far, well have to wait and see when these pop up in a future updated or get activated later on.

[Thanks, Cullen]

PSA: Adobe halts new installs of Flash on Android as of tomorrow

PSA Adobe halts new installs of Flash on Android from tomorrowAdobe has been broadcasting as much as possible that Flash on Android is going away, although it’s been offering a grace period for those addicted to the plugin. It’s now time to wean yourself off. As Adobe warned earlier in the year, new installations from Google Play won’t be an option from August 15th onwards. Any downloads after that point will be limited to updates for existing installations or to those willing to raid Adobe’s archives — assuming would-be users aren’t already running Android 4.1, that is. While we’d still expect Flash to preserve some of its relevance in mobile as long as phones ship with it preinstalled, and alternatives like Skyfire persist, we’d strongly suggest getting comfortable with HTML5 and native apps from now on.

RealPlayer leaves beta, becomes fully-fledged Android app

RealPlayer leaves beta, becomes fullyfledged Android app

RealNetworks has decided to roll out that old internet chestnut, RealPlayer, to a fresh-faced generation of smartphones that are screaming out for one more media player. This one reckons it can handle your music, video and photo content al in the same blueish hue and while the player has a basic flavor out for free, there’s a $5 app for those that like the finer things in life. Extra features in the paid-for version include a graphic equalizer with save function, Gracenote database compatibility and manual metadata editing for those with more esoteric music tastes. Naturally, advertising is nixed in this version too. Now out from beta testing, hit the source for the download.
