Nook app packs new features on iOS and Android, makes UK debut

Nook app now packs VoiceOver support on iOS, fresh Android release tags along

Barnes & Noble’s Nook app has reached version 3.3 on iOS and Android, bringing a handful of new features in tow. Headlining the iOS update are screen magnification and support for Apple’s VoiceOver feature, which can assist the blind and visually impaired by reading content aloud. The app has also been gussied up for the iPhone 5’s additional screen real estate. Both Android and iOS flavors of the application pack language support for French, Italian, German, Spanish and British English — and indeed they’ve now cozied up to the Nook’s UK storefront following the arrival of the latest hardware in that land a few days back. If you’re fixing to download the spruced up app, Barnes & Noble recommends syncing your library before making the leap.

Google Play, developers slash prices on apps and media for Thanksgiving weekend

Google Play, developers slash prices on apps and media for Thanksgiving weekend

If you’ve taken advantage of the myriad Black Friday deals on mobile devices and PCs, you’re probably looking for content to feed the technology beast. Google and app creators are pulling out all the stops to make sure that beast stays full: Google Play has discounts throughout the Thanksgiving weekend for just about every format on offer. Android apps are the highlight, with SwiftKey 3, Shadowgun and Documents To Go on the list of those with grander price cuts, although there’s some definite bargains to be had in media. Among the picks are price drops on books like The Hobbit, movies like The Big Lebowski and Serenity, and music from the likes of Diana Krall and Kendrick Lamar. We can’t possibly mention every offer here, so check our links for some of the larger deals.

Latest Google Play APK suggests pre-orders in the works, app reviews may require Google+

Latest Google Play APK suggests preorders in the works, app reviews may require a Google account

If you’re down for a round of crystal ball gazing into the future of Google Play, then you’d best thank Android Police, which recently tore apart the latest APK in attempt to learn what new features might be on deck. Most curiously, the mobile app suggests that pre-order functionality may work its way into Google Play, and while there’s nothing definitive about how it might be implemented, it goes without saying that the feature would make more sense for hardware rather than software. Not to stop there, it also appears that developers are working to integrate the app review system with Google+. As is, it seems that you may be required to be a Google+ member in order to review apps, and your name and picture will be publicly tied to these reviews. To learn more about these features and other potential new additions, be sure to hit up the source link below.

Firefox for Android adds support for select smartphones with ARMv6 processors

Firefox for Android adds support for select smartphones with ARMv6 processors

Firefox on Android has been a luxury that devices running Google’s mobile OS with ARMv7 processors have had, but now Mozilla is broadening its browser’s horizons. Now, the latest version of Firefox’s mobile incarnation adds support for phones sporting ARMv6 processors with minimum speeds of 800mhz alongside at least 512MB of RAM. With those specs, that brings the HTC ChaCha and Status, LG Optimus Q, Motorola Fire XT, Samsung Galaxy Ace and others into the fold. In addition, the browser’s latest version brings Explore by Touch support on Jelly Bean and hardware and software decoding of H.264, AAC and MP3 formats on Android 4.0 and 4.1 devices. Fixes that address instability on Android 4.2 and text deletion issues also tag along in the release. To get your mitts on the download, simply tap the second source link below.

Google Play Store update on Android brings post-install suggestions, translations

Google Play Store update on Android brings postinstall suggestions, translations

Google likes to stealthily roll out Google Play Store updates for Android users on a frequent basis, whether it’s to add new sections or to encourage a little more impulse shopping. We’d put a brand new revision in that last camp. The 3.10.9 tweak no longer just leaves us lingering at an app’s page during an installation: start the process and the store offers suggestions based on fellow adopters’ habits as well as a shortcut back to the main portal. Language mismatches in the store could also be a thing of the past with an option to translate descriptions into the device owner’s native tongue. Along with a quicker way to add Google+ friends and get better app recommendations, Google’s refresh is clearly built to remove those last points of hesitation before trying something new; if the app drawer is looking a little bare, hit the source link (or wait for an automatic update) to fill up.

Google+ auto-embeds Android app install links to spur curious downloaders

Google autoembeds Android app installs to encourage impulsive downloaders

Next to an in-person demo, social networking is arguably the most common way to learn about apps through unofficial sources. It’s only natural, then, that Google streamline the whole process of sharing Android apps in Google+. Include a link to a release in the Google Play Store with a Google+ post and the page now generates a clickable title card that installs the app right after choosing a target device. While the gesture doesn’t extend to +1 votes, it’s more than enough to give Android fans an easy and trustworthy way of spreading love for a favorite app. Or, at least, some shameless self-promotion.

PSA: Google Nexus 4, Nexus 10 for sale in US now! (update: Nexus 4 already sold out)

PSA Google Nexus 4, Nexus 10 on sale in US now!

All three sizes of Google’s hardware family are now available for purchase in both the US and Canada. Joining a 3G-flavored Nexus 7, the LG-made Nexus 4 starts at $299 for 8GB, Samsung’s Nexus 10 rings in at $399 for 16GB. And what do you get for that kind of money? A whole lot; the new Nexus phone houses Android 4.2, Snapdragon S4 Pro and rich 4.7-inch 1,280 x 768 display. Meanwhile the ten-inch Nexus tablet packs the same fresh software, an incredible 2,560 x 1,600 resolution screen and a quad dual-core 1.7 GHz processor, so a whole lot of bang for several hundred of bucks. Hit up Google Play below and pick your screen and storage size.

Update: And like that, it appears the 16GB both models of the Nexus 4 are sold out. Already.

Google Play Movies, Music reach Australia, Canada and parts of Europe on November 13th (update: Google scales it back)

Google Play on Google TV

Google’s long-awaited offering of Google Play Movies and Music on Google TV may have answered a longstanding demand for streaming access from some viewers, but it still left many of those outside of the US turning to alternatives. The company is closing that open loop with plans to take the media strategy global. Australia, Canada, France, Germany and the UK will all get similar streaming video options on their Google TV hubs as of November 13th; while content will undoubtedly vary, the gesture once more puts the international stores on roughly the same level as their American counterpart. The only debate left likely centers on what movie to rent for celebrating the occasion.

Update: Google has made a new post suggesting that its earlier outline was a mistake: Australia and Canada aren’t part of the November 13th mix.

Google Play carrier billing goes live for impulse buyers on Verizon

Google Play carrier billing goes live for impulse buyers on Verizon

Google gave the broadest of targets when it said Google Play carrier billing would reach Verizon in the “coming weeks” — those last two words are often hints from companies that we shouldn’t hold our breath. Call us surprised, then, when Google quietly takes the option live two weeks later. At least one Droid-Life reader has discovered that it’s now possible to load as many as $25 in purchases per month on an existing Big Red smartphone bill and pay through just the one channel. The move puts all four major US carriers on the same page, and gives Verizon subscribers an incentive to splurge on apps and movies for that new Droid RAZR HD… so long as they remember to deal with the financial fallout afterwards.
