GPS Shoes: Ruby Slippers 2.0
Posted in: Today's ChiliThese shoes won’t take you home when you click its heels, but it will help you get there. Made by British artist Dominic Wilcox, the No Place Like Home shoes points the wearer to the right way via the magic of GPS.
According to Inhabitat, there’s a GPS receiver on the heel of the left shoe that can be used to punch in an address, although they didn’t mention exactly how that’s done. Once it knows where you want to go, LEDs on the left shoe indicate the direction to take, while a line of LEDs on the right shoe provides a rough estimate of proximity to the destination.
The shoes are part of Wilcox’ solo show Variations on Normal at the KK Outlet. It would’ve been awesome if he made them with roller skates.

Getting GPS navigation on your smartphone or tablet is cool but it can be weary to look on the screen every other minute to find the next turn towards your destination. Imagine how convenient it would be if you could somehow tell your shoes about your destination and they guided you towards it. No more peeking at GPS screens every other second.
Such is the concept design of GPS brogue shoes that has been proposed by a British designer, Dominic Wilcox. The idea is to upload a destination to these shoes and then help them ‘light’ the right path for you. (more…)

The iPhone 5 will be the first device to bring on iOS 6, the system from Apple that’ll have the company’s first mobile turn-by-turn navigation system as well as 3D mapping, and today Apple has listed the regions where each feature will be appearing. Traffic, 3D buildings (aka Flyover), and turn-by-turn navigation are limited to a certain set of countries at the launch of iOS 6 for not only iPhone 5 but the rest of the compatible list of Apple mobile devices as well. While 3D buildings is limited at the moment to the USA, traffic is open to a much larger list – and turn-by-turn navigation is ready for almost everywhere.
The list begins with turn-by-turn navigation covering everywhere from the USA to Israel to Hong Kong and back again. New Zealand is included, as is the UK, and Sweden and Romania get to join in on the fun as well. Siri support for international destinations – a list of compatibility, that is – has been revealed and updated with Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Mexico, Spain, Switzerland, UK and the USA on the list. Siri Twitter integration and Facebook integration have been listed too with 14 countries on the list.
Dictation support has been extended to a list of 15 countries, while Siri restaurant reservations are currently set for Canada, Mexico, and the USA. Siri’s sports support – new to iOS 6 also – will be appearing in the USA, UK, Mexico, and s list of 12 other countries. Siri Movie Information will be popping up in 13 countries while Siri Movie Reviews will be in Australia, Canada, the UK, and the USA. Movie Showtimes will be in Canada, the UK, and the USA.
The USA is the only region to be included in the full list of iOS 6 features at launch time, with 3D Buildings being the only item that the UK is not included on – otherwise its the UK and the USA on ever single list. The iPhone 5’s announcement yesterday did prove to be rather underwhelming for some, where one of the updates include Apple’s Maps, which is Cupertino’s new proprietary mapping and navigation app that will make sure that iPhone users will not miss Google Maps on iOS too much. In conjunction with the iPhone 5’s 4” display, CoPilot Live has been specially optimized for the taller display for an incredible widescreen navigation experience. Just in case anyone missed the memo, CoPilot Live has been integrated with Apple’s Maps in iOS 6. If you are a CoPilot Live user, you can find and select a location on Apple’s Maps, followed by using CoPilot’s offline, voice-guided, turn-by-turn GPS guidance to arrive at your destination safe and sound.
Similar to the rest of CoPilot apps, maps will be stashed away on the phone so that you can always refer to it whenever you are lost without having to have another worry at the back of your mind to find a Wi-Fi hotspot or head to a place with 3G or LTE connectivity. Do expect CoPilot’s latest effort that is iPhone 5 compatible to come in the form of a free app in due time.

It’s time for the greatness of Nokia’s own City Lens technology to be released into the wild, the same powerful beast shown earlier this year at CTIA and more recently on the Lumia 820 and 920 lineup! This software brings the power of Nokia Maps to the virtual universe showing an overlay of places and attractions on your real world view through your device’s camera. City Lens will be available for several Nokia devices for real, in a v1.0 version out of Beta, starting today!
If you use the Nokia Lumia 900, 800, or 710, you’re in luck. These devices will have access to City Lens starting today. All you’ve got to do is follow the following directions to grab it quite quickly! You’ll be using your device’s camera to see a QR-code first and foremost – from there you’ll get the download and you’ll be on your way! Note that you do need an internet connection to grab this download, so make sure data or wifi are on!
1. Press the Search button on your Nokia Lumia and then tap Vision
2. Scan the barcode
3. Tap on the link when it appears on the screen
4. Install the application from the Windows Phone Marketplace
You could also, of course, just go straight to the Windows Phone Marketplace, but that’s not nearly as fun a process! Have a peek at our hands-on with City Lens through the eyes of the Nokia Lumia 920 here, and note that the final version for the 920 and the 820 will vary just a bit from the version you’re seeing for your 900, 800, or 710 today.
With Windows Phone 8 as it appears on the 920 and 820 you’ll find some features that only appear on Windows Phone 8 devices and above. With this version of City Lens, you’ll be able to pin to start any category tile. You’ll also be able to add your own favorite searches, and you’ll be able to use City Lens in both portrait and landscape modes. Check our timeline below for more City Lens action!

Nokia reveals new City Lens augmented reality app for Windows Phone 8 lineup

Just last week, Nokia’s augmented reality app known as City Lens broke free of its beta shackles, but its developers are hardly sitting on their laurels as they help prepare the company’s Windows Phone 8 handsets for store shelves. New to the Lumia 920 and Lumia 820, Nokia has announced a refined version of City Lens replete with 3D icons and the ability to disable suggestions that aren’t within the line of sight. Also on deck, users will be able to query their surroundings more quickly by pinning categories to the home screen and storing favorite searches. As one final addition, Nokia will be introducing the ability to use City Lens in both portrait and landscape orientation. Unfortunately, the company hasn’t committed to these new features for the Windows Phone 7.5 version of its app. For a quick peek of what’s next, just hop the break for a video teaser from Nokia.

RWC announced today in Japan not one but two Android 4.0 Tablet that are also fully fledge capable PNDs. They say you should never learn how the sausage gets made, but we’re willing to make an exception for Google Maps. Talking to The Atlantic, Google has revealed just how much the human element figures into all that collected satellite imagery and road data. Many pieces of terrain information are tested and modified against what Google calls Ground Truth: actual driving, alternate sources and sign photos automatically extracted from Street View runs. Google isn’t just making the occasional correction, either. Mapping a country can take hundreds of staff plugging away at the company’s Atlas tool, even before we get a crack with Google Map Maker. The combination of man and machine helps explain why Google Maps is one of the most accurate sources of location information on Earth — although the firm does have some catching up to do in space.

Apple’s patents often allow us a peek into where the company may be headed. The company has now been granted a new patent which shows that it may be trying to find ways to sync an iPhone with a vehicle.
What makes this patent even more significant is that Scott Forstall is among the list of inventors. Forstall is the senior vice president of the iOS software division at Apple and has been described by many as someone who can be the potential Apple CEO in the coming years. (more…)
