Google Maps unveils new features in India, New Zealand and 150 universities worldwide

Navigation, Traffic Data comes to Google Maps in India

Google is bringing voice-guided turn-by-turn navigation to Android smartphone users in India. While the functionality’s been available since January if you’ve rooted your device, the official version lands today with a localized “Indian English” voice option. At the same time, it’s adding live traffic information for major roads in big cities like Mumbai, New Delhi and Hyderabad — with both arriving today on handsets running Gingerbread and up. At the same time, it’s giving Google Map Maker and Biking Directions to users in New Zealand — and college students at over 150 universities worldwide will now be able to find themselves thanks to Street View maps on campus. Of course, that does mean you can no longer use Google as an excuse as to why you missed Phys. Ed. 202 next semester.

[Thanks, Devanshu]

How Your Phone Could Pinpoint Your Location Down to a Single Stairstep [Guts]

Knowing exactly where you are on the face of the earth gives your smartphone wonderful location-specific capabilities. But GPS can only tell you what building you’re in, not where you are in the structure. So STMicroelectronics has developed an advanced pressure sensing chip that can determine your vertical elevation down to what floor you’re standing on—or even what step of what staircase. The innovation is as awesome as it is creepy. More »

Mosoro releases its Bluetooth LE sensors and SDK for VIP appcessory developers

Mosoro releases its Bluetooth LE sensors and SDK for VIP appcessory developers

Since we last heard about Mosoro’s Lego-brick sized Bluetooth LE modules, they’ve changed their names, picked up another member and are now making their way to iOS app developers. The 3D-Motion’s got an accelerometer, gyroscope and magnetometer, while the Enviro measures temperature, humidity and barometric pressure. New to the team is Proximity, useful for triggering location-based apps and tracking motion for creating alerts. All three rechargeable Bluetooth low energy sensors have “shake-to-wake” support, an RGB “glow-cap” for notifications and a humble programmable button. They are expected to hit retail in fall 2012, but “VIP” app developers can grab them now, as well as the SDK which simplifies iOS Bluetooth integration. Got the ideas and inclination to become one of Mosoro’s “rock star app-developer partners?” Then go sign up on the website and see if you make the VIP grade.

Garmin does new in-dash navigation tricks, steers 2013 Dodge and Chrysler models

DNP Garmin will steer new Dodge and Chrysler models with indash navigation

You won’t be able to leap tall structures in one of Chrysler’s new cars with Garmin in-dash GPS hardware, but at least you’ll be able to see them. 3D buildings and terrain are among the fresh features in the navigators, along with a new UI, trip planner, improved junction view (by a factor of 25), and enhanced routing. The nav company is one of the cogs in Chrysler’s Uconnect service, which will roll out in four models next year: the Dodge Journey, Charger and Dart along with Chrysler’s 300. Other players in the service are SiriusXM, which provides weather info and entertainment; and Sprint, which shoulders the in-car data workload through its cellular service. Lest you think that all this infotainment will distract you right into the ditch, worry not — most of the controls are voice activated. If you want a beaming dealer to getcha into one of the new models, the PR is after the break.

Kindle Fire 2 leaked photos appear with Nokia Maps tip in tow

With less than a week before Amazon’s next press event, several new bits of information have been leaked showing off a new Kindle Fire tablet and tipping Nokia as their new Maps pusher. As Amazon continues to attempt to work with Google’s mobile OS Android with as little Google influence as possible, they’ve been tipped to be working with Nokia Oyj by Rueters where they say that not only will the next Kindle Fire model have either a GPS chip or Wi-fi triangulation, they’ll be working with Nokia’s own brand of GPS mapping rather than Google Maps. The other reveal happening within the last 24 hours includes a couple photos of the Kindle Fire 2 before it hits the press room.

The images you see below show off what The Verge has been tipped is a new Kindle Fire. This unit appears to have a slightly updated user interface working on it as well as a bit of picture-in-picture video chat. You’ll also see a front-facing camera sitting on the top of the long side of the tablet near a microphone hole as well.

This tablet appears to have a rather similar look to the original Kindle Fire with basically the same edge bumper and display size. The unit pictured here is likely a mock-up as some “pixelation” – if you will – does occur in each of the different poses. The border size on each model appears to be a slight bit different as well – it may be, however, that there are two models and one brand.

The image showing two tablets may be showing the 7-inch version of the Kindle Fire 2 while the upright tablet may be the 10-inch Kindle Fire 2. This would lend itself well to the rumor that there are indeed two units and that the smaller one is still a media-toting beast while the larger has a more powerful processor and the ability to work with higher-requirements media. The user interface also reflects the Android Amazon app store’s relatively new look as well – check it out and let us know if you agree!
