Toyota Sports Drive Logger Replays Circuit Runs At Home

Toyota has decided to blur the lines between virtual and real-life car racing, thanks to a brand new accessory for its 86 (which is also called the GT86 and Scion FR-S in select markets) sports car. With the new Sports Drive Logger, drivers are able to record their lap times as well as relevant data, before opting to upload such information to the Gran Turismo 6 video game, so that one can go head-to-head against friends and professional drivers.

This is one fun device to be sure, as it breaks down your performance into a bunch of different metrics. Specially designed to blend real-life track driving with the virtual, you will be able to perform virtual replays of your track runs as you can see in the video example above.

The Sports Drive Logger telemetry recording device would hook up to the ride’s controller area network (CAN) and GPS in order to perform its data collection duties. Among the data collected include GPS information, vehicle speed, accelerator pedal input, steering angles, brake operation signals, shifting data and engine speed, where all drivers have their own style.

Such data, when applied to the PS3’s Gran Turismo 6 car racing game, would allow one to “replay” the run in the virtual world using their real world driving style. Right now, the GT6 Toyota drive logger functionality supports the Fuji Speedway International Course, the Tsukuba Circuit 2000 Course, and the Suzuka Circuit International Course, with plans to add additional courses down the road. Gran Turismo 6 Debut Not As Successful As GT5 In Japan

Gran Turismo 6 Debut Not As Successful As GT5 In JapanGran Turismo is a gaming franchise that has certainly earned plenty of accolades ever since it was released, and over the years, we have seen a fair number of versions roll out, with just about all of them being great successes. In their latest outing over at the Land of the Rising Sun, Gran Turismo 6’s sales has paled in comparison to that of its predecessor, Gran Turismo 5, managing to muster a mere 204,784 units compared to 430,707 units, respectively, with the latter moving that amount all the way back in November 2010.

This is on the back of news that Japan is one particular region that has not yet received both the Sony PS4 as well as the Xbox One, where the former will launch only until February 22nd next year. As for the Nintendo Wii U, it will continue its rise with a sales figure of up to 48,762 units for the week ending December 8, making it the second best-selling platform of the week, lagging behind the Nintendo 3DS’ sales of 125,269 units. Some would say that the Nintendo Wii U has started to pick up in its sales yet again because of the Dragon Quest X rollout, where it sold 70,648 units. Is this a precursor of things to come?

Sony reportedly planning Gran Turismo movie with producers of The Social Network

Sony reportedly planning Gran Turismo movie with producers of The Social Network

While it’s not the Mario Kart movie we’d all been hoping for (c’mon, right?,) it’s arguably the next best thing. Sony is reportedly developing a film about that other petrol head game — Gran Turismo. It’s claimed that Mike de Luca and Dana Brunetti (The Social Network / Fifty Shades of Grey) are onboard with the project, which no doubt hopes to capitalize on the PlayStation title’s solid following. That or Sony got sick of waiting for a certain other series to end before pursuing the idea. While we’re not suggesting that our plot expectations are low, there’s still hope other game crossovers might give us some faith in the format first.
