First GSM Palm Pre now on sale in Germany, with new Euro-specific apps in tow

We knew it was coming, and here it is — the glorious first showing of the Palm Pre in its GSM garb. From today, our Deutsch comrades can grab a Pre and do whatever they want to do to it, courtesy of O2, its exclusive German supplier. The device will set you back €481 without contract, with the O2 My Handy option letting you finance it via 24 monthly payments of €20. Check out the online store link below for full details and available calling plans. Pre Thinking have also noted the arrival of two new free apps in the Pre catalog — ran and VZ-Netzwerke, both in German — and the likely prospect of even more coming along as the Pre starts its long-awaited rollout across Europe over the next few days.

GSM Palm Pre for O2 Germany pictured in the wild

The Palm Pre is scheduled to make its big GSM debut on O2 in Europe in just a few weeks, and it looks like final production units are making their way into the wild — these shots of a German Pre complete with final box art and a localized keyboard just hit the wires. Nothing here you’re not familiar with already, but man — the GSM and the Pre, gettin’ down. We’d only dared to dream, you know? Now all we need is a version with some North American 3G bands and we’ll be all set.

Palm Pixi stares GSM in the face, lives to brag about it (update: video!)

Though nothing’s been announced, betting against a GSM version of the Palm Pixi would be a foolish move. There’s certainly no mistaking that “E” for Edge logo and SIM slot beneath the battery in these leaked images from Vietnam (yes, again). Oddly, this particular GSM variant pictured only contains 4GB of internal storage vs. the 8GB model announced for Sprint. Perhaps a prototype limitation only? Let’s hope.

Update: Video now available after the break.

TerreStar Genus: AT&T’s first dual-mode cellular / satellite smartphone

Welp, that didn’t take long. Just a few months after TerreStar announced that it had completed its first call on the new bird, the revived sat phone provider has now announced the first dual-mode smartphone for AT&T. Granted, we knew these two would be holding hands in the near future, but it’s still refreshing to see the Genus hit the landscape. The WinMo-based phone will ship with a 2.6-inch touchscreen, WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS and GSM / GPRS / EDGE / UMTS / HSDPA radios. Oh, and it can tap into satellite waves too. This one’s actually aimed at government, energy, utility, transportation and maritime users, and while it’s slated to ship in Q1 2010 for an undisclosed amount, AT&T assures us that a consumer-oriented version is in the pipeline. Too bad this only enhances coverage in the US, Puerto Rico, US Virgin Islands and territorial waters — we always dreamed of phoning home from Komsomolets Island.

Garmin nuvifone G60 officially coming to AT&T: October 4th for $299

Can you believe it? No, seriously — can you believe it? Nearly two full years after its surprise introduction to the world, the nüvifone G60 is finally coming to US shores. In an official press release outed today, the Garmin nüvifone G60 has been blessed with an October 4th launch date on AT&T. Oddly enough, nary a mention of “ASUS” or “Garmin-Asus” is found, but regardless of semantics, you can bet that it’ll be looking for buyers this Sunday. The internal GPS chip and 3 megapixel, auto-focusing camera will enable users to geotag photos and emails and navigate using the same heralded user interface that folks rely on today with the company’s standalone PNDs. You’ve already pounded the specifications into your head by now, but the last figures you’ll need to know are these: it’ll run $299 on a two-year agreement after a $100 mail-in rebate, and if you’re hoping to access Premium Connected Services — which includes traffic updates, white pages, weather, movie, local events and fuel price content — you’ll be forking out $5.99 per month after the 30-day trial expires. So, after all of this, who’s in?

AT&T 3G MicroCell unboxing and impressions

We’ve already seen AT&T’s 3G MicroCell picked up by a few desperate Charlotteans, but for those residing in North Carolina’s only city to own a professional sports championship (sorry, Panthers), their time has finally come to secure what just might be the most anticipated femtocell debut in the states. You heard right — Raleigh, NC has become AT&T’s second test market for the device you’re peering at above, and starting today, those in and around the Triangle can procure one from their local store. Needless to say, we jumped at the chance to give the unit a go, so feel free to hop on past the break if you’re on the hunt for a few more impressions.

AT&T’s 3G MicroCell tested and reviewed by Charlottean: yes, it works

For those who missed the torrent of 3G MicroCell news yesterday, here’s the long and short of it: the Cisco-built device is now on sale, but only in Charlotte, North Carolina. One fortunate Charlottean managed to scoop one up, but rather than keeping the experience to himself, he decided to bang out a full review for the rest of the world to see. By and large, Jason’s experience with the femtocell mirrored our own with Sprint’s AIRAVE. Installation and setup was a breeze, and once it was booted up and operational, it worked like a charm. Before picking this up, he was seeing one bar of EDGE (if he was lucky); afterwards, his entire house was blanketed with five bars of 3G. Not surprisingly, he noted that the before and after difference when fielding calls was “night and day,” but he did take the opportunity to bark at the lofty $150 price tag. But hey, those desperate enough will cough up anything to actually use their phone, right?

GSM Palm Pre now looking at ‘autumn’ launch in Germany

You know, we admire Palm’s patience. We knew a GSM Pre was in the works about 8.43 minutes after its CES presser ended in January, and we’ve been waiting all this time for some carrier in some part of the New World to grab hold of a GSM version of the world’s first webOS handset. If you’ll recall, we last heard that O2 Germany would be giving its loyal users the chance to get that very handset before the holiday season, but now an updated image on the site clearly indicates that it’s coming this fall. As in, before winter. As in, within the next few months. As in, not nearly soon enough.

Deutsche Telekom eyeing Sprint Nextel for acquisition?

With T-Mobile UK and Orange now having to (potentially) learn to play nice, Deutsche Telekom is already looking ahead to its next big target: Sprint Nextel. According to a Telegraph report, the telecom giant, with an estimated value of $60.45 billion, has called in advisers from Deutsche Bank as it reportedly prepares to submit an offer to the $10.6 billion-valued Now Network within the next three weeks. The assimilation of Sprint and Deutsche Telekom subsidiary T-Mobile US under the same umbrella could give second-place AT&T a fight with a 78.2 million-strong customer base… but that said, we wouldn’t anticipate any quick or smooth merger given the US carriers rely on substantially different bands (CDMA vs. GSM) for service. Hey, there’s always WiMAX might come into play. Obviously there’s a lot of unanswered questions here, but at this point it’s all speculation given no actual offer has been thrown on the table — and we bet Hesse will have some choice words on the matter. Keep an eye out on this one, things could very quickly get very, very interesting here.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in!]

AT&T gets with the program, offers unlimited calling to ‘A-List’ numbers

Remember how ECON 101 taught you that competition was good? ‘Tis true! Long after Alltel introduced the idea of giving customers unlimited calling each month to a select list of numbers, AT&T is mimicking Verizon’s Friends & Family and T-Mobile’s myFaves offerings with its new “A-List with Rollover.” Subscribers with individual Nation plans of $59.99 or higher can phone up their very own VIP cast without tapping into their monthly bucket of minutes, theoretically allowing that rollover pool that you never, ever use to grow even larger. For individuals, you’ll be able to select up to five domestic phone numbers (mobile or landline) to call for free, while FamilyTalk customers with plans of $89.99 or more can select up to ten numbers. As with competing plans, AT&T users will be able to manage their A-List online and change them anytime, though new numbers do take 24 hours to register. The time to field bids on securing a coveted spot within your own A-Team is now, with the gratis feature opening up to all on September 20th.
