Palm prepping Pre with North American GSM, but for whom?

Palm seems to be making an active, conscientious effort to say as little as it can about the GSM version of the Pre, possibly in an effort to give Sprint as much spotlight as possible before its exclusivity expires — but as we all know, it’s real and it’s coming. Thing is, Palm has always implied that it’s being limited to European duty with a 3G radio that fails to cover bands that are of any interest to North Americans, so what the heck is this noise all about? Multiple certification bodies are now reporting the existence of a Pre model number P100UNA, as opposed to the P100UEU that’s launching in Europe — and it doesn’t take a lot of detective work to gather that those codes on the end stand for “North America” and “European Union,” respectively (for the record, the CDMA version on Sprint is P100EWW, so it ain’t that). One distinct possibility is that Palm’s preparing a version to cover Bell’s new HSPA network since the carrier is Palm’s exclusive Pre launch partner in Canada and they’re smack in the middle of a transition from CDMA — and needless to say, if that’s the case, there’ll be an unprecedented effort to get that sucker unlocked on the double.

Altek crams a dozen megapixels of wishful thinking into T8680 cameraphone

Altek crams a dozen megapixels of wishful thinking into T8680 cameraphone

There once was a time when a 12 megapixel cameraphone would have been laughed at, and, though many are still smirking (guilty), they’re now a reality — a reality that Altek wants desperately to be a part of with its T8680 handset. Its face looks rather like a PMP with a 3-inch WQVGA LCD, but on the back is the standard sort of 3x pop-out zoom that you’d expect on a compact shooter, sitting next to a tiny xenon flash. It’ll capture unnecessarily high resolution images while being crippled to VGA video, play back MP3 and AAC files, and tune into the Weekly Top 40 over FM. Yes, it’ll even make calls, but with only tri-band GSM/EDGE support don’t expect to e-mail those gigantic pictures directly from the phone. The T8680 is expected to hit Chinese retailers in about a month for 3000 yuan (about $440), and probably won’t be making much of an appearance elsewhere.

nuvi GPS with EDGE data makes its FCC debut

Sure, you’re still waiting for your Nüvifone, but in the meantime it looks like the kids at Garmin have taken all that hard-won knowledge and applied it to their latest PND. The nüvi 1690, which recently popped up at the FCC, features GSM, GPRS, and EDGE connectivity. The unit won’t support voice calls, although with Bluetooth you should be able to use it as a hands-free unit for your current cellphone. Garmin has thus far been mum on this guy, but as GPS Tracklog points out, the IFA show in Berlin is just around the corner — certainly the company will have something to say about all this by then. To check out the FCC bit for yourself, hit that read link. [Warning: PDF.]

China Unicom’s iPhone gets regulatory approval, pictured

Still having doubts that an iPhone will ever come to China via legitimate means? Have a gander at this. According to the listing after the break, which was discovered on China’s State Radio Regulatory Commission (SRRC; basically the Chinese version of the FCC) website, we’re looking at a GSM / WCDMA cellphone complete with Bluetooth, an internal model number A1324, a little-known manufacturer called “Apple Inc.” and an approval date of May 7th, 2009. We’re also told that the certificate expires in five years, which should give China Unicom plenty of time to capitalize on its reported three-year deal to offer the phone in mainland China. So, all we need now is what’s we’ve needed for years: a handwritten note from El Jobs himself saying that this whole thing is more than some sick charade.

Update: Looks like this may be the first live look at a China Unicom iPhone 3G, complete with no WiFi to speak of.

HTC Touch Pro2 calls dibs on 3.5mm audio jack for Telus and Verizon

That was quick. We heard that HTC was moving to standardize around 3.5mm audio jacks but we weren’t necessarily expecting the meaty Touch Pro2 to be on that list of devices. After all, it’s already shipping in its GSM version. Nevertheless, MobileSyrup has a soon-to-be released CDMA version of the Touch Pro2 for Telus (and ultimately, Verizon) that goes straight-up 3.5mm — no goofy ExtUSB jack converter required. Oh, and they’ve got video to prove it. See it after the break.

Nokia’s Surge official on AT&T, ships July 19 for $79.99

We’ve known about Nokia’s so-called Surge for months now, but at long last, AT&T has done its duty by making things official and giving us a price and release date to consider. The Symbian S60-based smartphone is aimed squarely at social media freaks, boasting a full QWERTY keyboard, a browser with Flash support (imagine that, right?), a pre-installed JuiceCaster app for easily updating your Facebook / Twitter status and a price tag that’s sure to turn heads. For just $79.99 after rebate, you’ll also get a 2 megapixel camera, AT&T Navigator, AT&T Video Share and the pleasure of handing over at least $30 per month for a required data plan (if you want the $50 rebate, anyway). If you’re sold already, you can get yours on July 19th.

BlackBerry Storm 2 spec’d, 3G-equipped original en route to AT&T?

You haven’t forgotten about that BlackBerry Storm 2, have you? The Boy Genius Report is claiming it’s gotten device specs for RIM’s touchscreen-centric maven, also reportedly called the 9550, and while not surprising (and not confirmed), according to his source the CDMA device will be sporting 802.11b/g (which we already sort of knew), a 3.2 megapixel camera, 360 x 480 capacitive touchscreen, and BlackBerry OS 5.0. If that’s not enough, the site’s also saying a GSM version of the original, with 3G in tow, does exist as the 9520 and is possibly on track for release soon on AT&T and Rogers. All nice fodder for dreams, but we’re not getting our hopes up until something more official rears its SurePress-laden head.

GSM Palm Pre makes exclusive first appearance on Movistar

There it is, the first official press shot (see that HSDPA icon?) of the GSM version of the Palm Pre. The “more information” link isn’t working at the moment but it’s clear that Movistar has exclusive rights to the Pre in Spain. Of course, Movistar, like O2 in the UK, is owned by Telefonica which so far seems to have clinched exclusivity throughout Europe. We’re still waiting for all this to get officially official sometime this week, if not today.

[Thanks, Enzo]

Palm Pre in cahoots with Dutch provider Hi?

The GSM version of Palm’s Pre looks all set for a UK announcement next week on O2. Now we get this, a Pre spotted on the support site for Dutch carrier Hi in The Netherlands. Fine, but what you may not know is that O2 and Hi (part of KPN) are also deeply intertwined with Telefonica — O2 being owned by Telefonica and KPN being an “integrated carrier” with a long history of Telefonica courtship rumors. So, putting two and two together might equal a September launch if that previous Telefonica rumor was true.

GSM Pre to launch on O2 in UK

We heard earlier this morning that the GSM Pre was set for a UK launch, and now it sounds like things are coming together: The Guardian says the Palm’s baby will launch on O2. That makes perfect sense, O2 owner Telefonica reportedly secured broad global rights to the Pre back in March. Of course, this is all yet to be official, but with actual GSM handsets floating around out there and an announcement expected next week, we’re guessing we don’t have too much longer to wait.
