Hasta La Gadget!

Despite the incredible popularity of videogaming, there’s still a stigma attached by many to those who play them, thinking gamers fat or lazy and generally not good people to be around. For anyone sensitive to those criticisms, the Cool8800C offers an escape, looking like a perfectly normal imitation of Nokia’s 8800 on the outside, but, like a transformer that runs illegal ROMs, quickly changes into a portable gaming console in disguise. Flip it open to reveal a full D-pad and four input buttons plus a 2.8-inch WQVGA LCD for playing emulated NES games or watching analog TV, or snap it shut to make use of its VGA camera and 900/1800MHz GSM connection. No, it’s not likely this one is destined for release anywhere too far outside of China, meaning you, dear reader, are probably going to have to come out of the closet with that gaming addiction of yours already.

Last we checked, a GSM handset couldn’t exactly hop on those speedy EV-DO waves without some sort of dual personality. And so far as we know, Palm’s forthcoming GSM Pre is, well, GSM only. Whatever the case, Britons should be at least mildly excited to know that Palm’s UK website now features the webOS-sporting Pre, even though the image is definitely not of a GSM Pre. Of course, the important part here is that a GSM Pre is definitely on its way to the UK, and considering that we already spotted one with a Vodafone SIM, we’re hoping that it’ll happen sooner rather than later. Much sooner, actually.

We would’ve wagered 50 euros there’d be a GSM Pre announced at MWC this week — but strangely, it didn’t happen. If we had to guess, a grand unveiling was probably held up by behind-the-scenes manfacuturer-operator drama in the course of trying to nail an exclusivity agreement, but that’s not to say there weren’t still SIM card-toting Pres floating around the show. PreCommunity happened across one of these today and astutely noted the presence of a Vodafone SIM around back — not damning evidence that the Pre will be announced as a Voda exclusive, granted, but it kinda makes you wonder, doesn’t it? Right, so integrated WWAN is awesome. But what’s not awesome is Sony’s decision to lock you down to Verizon Wireless on its ritzy new VAIO P. We’ve seen one team of investigators hack away in search of a SIM slot to no avail, but we should’ve known tnkgrl was the real lady for the job. Once again proving just how awesome she is, tnkgrl has not only modified the VAIO P to accept an AT&T SIM card, but she’s managed to get it working, host up the pictures to prove it and even provide a how-to guide enabling seasoned hackers to follow suit.
