Final Fantasy VII Finally Gets Remade… In LittleBigPlanet 2

Still waiting for a PS3 port of Final Fantasy VII? Wait some more. Because this is not it. It’s the next best thing though: a remake of the entire game on LittleBigPlanet 2, that includes “all conversations, sound tracks, characters, bosses, and enemies.”

final fantasy vii littlebigplanet 2 remake

The geeky feat was made by one Jamie Colliver, who spent a total of 6 months making the 20 levels needed to remake the PlayStation classic. Jamie even managed to mimic the materia and limit break system. He didn’t have to mimic the costumes though, thanks to the official Final Fantasy VII costume pack. Below is the first of 6 videos showing Colliver playing through the levels.

Bravo. The rest of the videos are on Jamie’s YouTube page. Someone give him an Elgato Game Capture or something so we can see the levels the way they were meant to be seen. Meanwhile those of you who have LBP 2 can look at and play the levels for yourselves. Just look for Jamie’s PSN ID “BRRPPPPPPPPPPPPP” (that’s 13 P’s).

Ben Heck’s BASIC Pocket PC: The Franken-Computer

Ben Heck is well known as a modder extraordinaire, and this time he doesn’t let anyone down by cobbling together a pocket PC from an array of harvested parts, including a chatpad from an Xbox 360 controller.

ben heck pocket pc hack

The BASIC pocket PC uses the aforementioned chatpad, an Arduino Uno and a Hitachi LCD display. The handheld computer runs an appropriately tiny version of the BASIC programming language called TinyBASIC. Thanks to its built-in interface, this Franken-computer allows Ben to control real-world objects – for example, Heck uses it to control a servo-operated ghost on a pinball playing field.

Check out the full show where Heck shows you how he built the device and to see what it can do.

The whole thing is pretty neat, but you’ll need to brush up on your electronics skills if you want to be able to make one of these for yourself.

Super Mario Hungry Hungry Hippos: Get the Most Marbles with Your Koopa

We don’t have nearly enough Super Mario inspired board games and this one is a work of sheer genius, turning Hungry Hungry Hippos into an amazing Koopa battle where you eat everything that you can.

This awesome game is the work of crafter KodyKoala, who spent about 50 hours modifying a standard Hungry Hungry Hippos game into a work of video game art. All I know is if Mario found himself in this Koopa-filled arena, he surely would be dead.

Each Koopa model took about 10 hours to complete and if you absolutely have to own it, the game will be going up for sale at the El Paso Comic Con on September 14th. The detail is amazing. So, who wants to buy it?

Kinect Hack Helps Disabled Mom Send Email

Chad Ruble’s mom has aphasia, a condition she acquired because of a stroke that she had 12 years ago. Like many other people with aphasia, Chad’s mom has a hard time reading and writing, so she can’t use email the way the rest of us do. But with the help of Chad and a Microsoft Kinect, she can now send simple emails.

kinect email hack by chad ruble

Chad made a “visual dashboard” that shows a range of emoticons as well as signal bars to help her mom indicate the intensity of those emotions, e.g. there’s an icon for happiness, and the signal bars let her specify how happy she is.

He then used a Kinect and a program he based on open source code to track his mom’s hand as well as to generate and send the email.

It’s okay. I cried a bit too. Wipe your tears and head to Chad’s blog for more details on his hack. I wonder if the dashboard would be easier to use via a touchscreen device.

Old Apple Mouse Gets a (Blue)tooth Transplant

Unless you frequently game on your PC or you have extraordinarily strong fingers, chances are your old computer mice still work. The folks at The Unconventional Hacker have figured out a way to transfer more modern guts to an old wired mouse, turning it into a wireless Bluetooth mouse.

The Unconventional Hacker sacrificed a cheap Bluetooth mouse to revive a 1986 Apple Desktop Bus mouse, but as Lifehacker noted, there’s a good chance you can do this with other mice as well. Basically you need to transfer the motherboard of the newer mouse into your older mouse. This might require a bit of improvisation on your part, but that’s what tinkerers live for. You gotta work hard for the privilege of using a one-button mouse again.

Upgradeable Tablet Concept: Mobile Imitating Desktop

A few days ago we saw a desktop computer with tablet features. Navarre Bartz is working on a tablet with desktop PC features, namely a swappable processor.

upgradeable tablet concept by Navarre Bartz

Bartz entered his concept into Instructables and Jack Daniel’s Independence Project. Bartz’ concept is based on the Toradex Colibri, an ARM-based all-in-one module with an nVidia Tegra 2 CPU. The idea is to have the CPU module plug into a baseboard where all the other components are installed. When a newer processor comes out, you simply open up the tablet, unplug the CPU module and replace it with the newer one, similar to upgrading parts on a desktop computer.

Aside from the CPU, Bartz also mentioned on YouTube that he was considering making the Bluetooth, GPS and Wi-Fi components upgradeable as well. That’s a far cry from today’s tablets, where the only hardware upgrade that can be done comes in the form of swapping SD or microSD cards to expand storage capacity, and even then not all tablets have this feature.

The Inebriator Robot Bartender Silently Mixes Drinks, Asks for No Tips

The Inebriator will be everyone’s favorite party robot. It mixes cocktails while you wait, and because it’s a ‘bot it will do so with precision and without complaint. How’s that for a drinking buddy.

An Arduino Mega 2560 microprocessor controls the stepper motor that drives the drink shelf, the control interface that contains a small LCD as well as a few buttons, the valves that control the flow of booze and the robot’s many LEDs.

Head to The Inebriator’s website for more details, although one crucial piece of information that’s not there yet is whether this will be a commercial product or not.

Mind-controlled Quadcopter Drone: Telekinesis Tech

The newest model of the Parrot AR.Drone can be controlled via the iPad. Fancy eh? Well, researchers at Zhejiang University have come up with a way to control the quadcopter using a person’s brain waves. That’s telekinesis, Kyle.

flyingbuddy 2 mind controlled parrot drone

Or not. Even though the dude above looks like he’s got a Professor X thing going on, the real magic isn’t in his DNA but on a PC. An EEG wired to his head reads his signals, which is processed on his laptop, which in turn wirelessly sends the equivalent command to the drone. The goal is to help disabled people be more independent and to be able to explore their surroundings, but there’s no reason normal people can’t enjoy this technology as well.

Combine the FlyingBuddy 2 with the ShockDrone and you have one hell of a party game.

Hulk Computer Casemod is Simply Smashing

Hulk fans are sure to love this awesome radioactive green computer case mod. Even the Hulk himself would just stand before it in amazement rather than try to smash it and he smashes everything.

In fact, I dare say that it would bring a tear to the Hulk’s eye. It features a whole mess of green cold cathodes, action figures doing various things, external hardware, and cooling equipment that glows and looks like radioactive ooze. It’s completely over the top, but in a good way.

This unbelievable piece of art was the highlight of this year’s ‘bring your own computer’ at QUAKECON 2012. You can see why. It was built by Derrick Johnson who knows that it is better to build and not destroy like the Hulk. Check out the gallery over on ScrewAttack for more great pictures.

Hack a Day’s Drone Will Tase You, Bro

Hey Range, you wished for a taser-equipped quadrotor drone right? Hack a Day has served as your genie. The folks who run the site managed to modify a Parrot AR.Drone to deliver a shock on contact.

taserdrone by hack a day

Hack a Day ran two strips of aluminum tape along the outline of the indoor variant of the Parrot AR.Drone. The tapes were connected to the capacitor of a disposable camera. When the parallel strips are connected – like when they come into contact with human skin – the circuit completes and electricity flows through the tapes, resulting in this:

That’s right: the current will turn you into a white dude’s forearm. Seriously though this thing can pack a punch, but fortunately not a Fist of the North Star caliber punch. Watch it chase and tase in the video below:

Head to Shock Hack a Day to find out how to build your own TaserDrone.
