New Halo Makes Online Appearance Via Tesco, Microsoft Says It Is Fake

New Halo Makes Online Appearance Via Tesco, Microsoft Says It Is FakeIt was earlier this morning when we first brought you word that there is a possible new Call of Duty title that is known as Ghosts which appeared online (or at least, its box art did), where it was duly removed shortly afterwards, where that act lent further credence that Call of Duty: Ghosts is very real, and is obviously on its way to the mass market. Well, looks like there might be a new Halo title in the pipeline as it appeared on a Tesco listing online, which surely caused many Halo fanboys to sit up, take notice, and raise quite an uproar via online channels.

Hence, it is nice to see Microsoft’s online firefighting team squash all rumors of an upcoming Halo title by issuing a statement, saying, “This listing is not indicative of a Halo product launch. We have no news to share of future Halo titles.”

So much for the unannounced Halo title with a suggestion of it making its way to the Xbox 360 later this year. With Halo 4 having launched last November, it might be a while before we see an actual Halo edition sometime down the road.

Halo 4 Castle Map Pack Adds 3 New Maps, 6v6 Playlist On April 8

Halo 4′s Majestic Map Pack was the last piece of DLC content released by 343 studios, which was released just a few weeks ago. Before the game released, Microsoft had promised three additional map packs would be released, and today, we’re hearing some information regarding the final map pack, called Castle.

The Castle Map Pack for Halo 4 will add three new maps as well as a 6 vs. 6 playlist when it’s released. The three maps included in the Castle Map Pack are called Daybreak, Outcast and Perdition. The Daybreak map takes place in the middle of military facilities which includes an idyllic mountain range while Outcast has players fighting through the tunnels and arches of a secluded rebel outpost. The final map, Perdition, takes the multiplayer mayhem into the heart of an urban battleground. (more…)

Guy Builds the Greatest Video Game Weapon Arsenal Ever

This game room tells you many things at a glance. This gamer clearly loves Halo. He is rocking an Xbox 360. His game collection is neat and orderly. There are a bunch of game weapons on the wall. And he is almost certainly single. I don’t know any wife or girlfriend who would allow such an awesome room.

Prop builder Andrew Cook created an arsenal of replicas of guns and swords from Halo and Mass Effect to decorate his game room with. Clearly, Andrew takes his gaming very seriously. It would be kind of intimidating entering this room to play with him.

The weapons are made primarily from lightweight EPS styrofoam, and no, Andrew won’t sell them to you. But if you want to see how he builds them, you can check out some videos of how the guns were made here. Check out the massive Halo 4 Forerunner Binary Rifle here:

Bungie reveals Destiny: A shared-world shooter

Bungie has just revealed its new project, titled Destiny. Destiny will be a persistent, online multiplayer game that Eric Hirshberg, Activision CEO, dubs as a “shared-world shooter”. The game will be released for both the Playstation 3 and the Xbox 360. Bungie has emphasized that there will be no subscription fee for the game. It will require a constant connection to the internet, as it is a major factor in the “persistent, online multiplayer” aspect of the game.

Destiny 8

Destiny has a 10-year publishing deal with Activision. Bungie has revealed that Destiny will be released as 10 “books” over the course of 10 years. Each book will have its own beginning, middle, and end. There are currently 350 developers in Bungie working on the game. There are also teams outside of Bungie that are able to co-locate with each other, which provides Bungie with the ability to rapidly create and improve every aspect of the game. Bungie also stated that the Destiny franchise will be brought to multiple devices later on, also emphasizing that there will be a mobile app that lets players track stats, quest info, and notifications from the in-game world.

While Destiny is going to be a online multi-player game, it will be different than an MMO. Destiny’s story takes place in the Earth’s solar system after a mysterious cataclysm wipes out almost all of humanity. The survivors are relocated to the ‘safe zone’, which also acts as the beginning zone for new players. There will be 3 classes; Hunter, Titan, and Warlock. The only class with a notable difference is the Warlock, who can cast spells. Bungie says that despite there only being 3 classes, each character will be unique to the player, and will grow with the player throughout the game. In the ‘safe zone’, there will be an alien sphere called ‘The Traveler’ that supplies players with weapons, magical powers, and defensive equipment. While in the ‘safe zone’, players can meet up with their friends, and/or they can use spaceships to travel and raid new territories.

The game very much emphasizes cooperative play, but you can still play the game solo. Bungie, however, says that in order for players to realize “the vision of the game”, they have to play with other players. While in public areas, such as towns, players will be paired up with other players similar to them. This is based on the levels of the players, as well as other similar aspects. Bungie emphasizes that public areas will not be overcrowded like in MMOs. There will not be thousands of people crammed into one place, but rather a controlled amount. Also, unlike other multi-player games, Destiny will not have a lobby interface or menu for tracking quests. Everything happens in real-time, where players just wander the world, meet new people, and participate in activities that appear at whim.

Activision and Bungie both kept quiet about some important details, like when the game will be released, but they do have a very impressive goal in mind. It will be very interesting to see the two companies try to execute its 10-year plan, and whether or not they will succeed. Maybe if they do consider implementing eSports with the game, Destiny will have a good shot of lasting a long time.

Halo creators unveil ‘Destiny,’ an MMO-like first-person-shooter for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3

Halo creators unveil 'Destiny,' an MMOlike firstpersonshooter for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3

When Halo creator Bungie managed to steal away from Microsoft back in 2007, Master Chief’s forefathers were afforded a few years to go dark and head down on a brand new gaming universe. Today, Bungie and its new benefactor, Activision, revealed that new franchise as “Destiny,” an online-required persistent world first-person shooter. Even though the game’s not due out this year, Bungie says it’s headed to Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, with no mention of next-gen.

The online requirement extends to both single-player and multiplayer campaigns — your character’s achievements remain persistent, and your avatar will seamlessly populate friends’ games (rather than futzing with menus and the like), allowing for on-the-fly pairings. Bungie’s shying away from outright referring to Destiny as an MMO, a la World of Warcraft. “[The] amount of players you see is design controlled. It’s not about stuffing as many people in there as possible,” Bungie COO Pete Parsons told our sister site, Joystiq. Of course, with next-gen sounding online connectivity, Bungie’s silence on next-gen consoles is little more than a temporary vow — Destiny seems a lock for (at very least) Sony and Microsoft’s next consoles, if not also the PC (Wii U’s looking unlikely).

Hard details on Destiny are a bit scarce at the moment — when it launches, if it’s part of a series, how exactly the game will work — but we’ve dropped concept art below and a debut video just beyond the break. The video goes into a bit more detail on the universe, and briefly touches on the smartphone tie-in that Destiny will have (think Halo Waypoint), but for a more exhaustive approach to Destiny‘s debut, Joystiq‘s got you covered.

Update: In Activision’s official PR, Destiny is listed as heading to Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and, “other future console platforms.”

Metal Master Chief: I Am Pewter Man

Halo fans will want to break open their piggy banks right now and rush over to Etsy to get their hands on this wondrous metal statuette of the game’s protagonist, Master Chief.

metal master chief 1

This 6-inch-tall Master Chief statue was hand-cast out of almost 1 pound of pewter by artist Donald James. It’s truly a sight to behold. Chief himself was cast in 9 separate components, and then soldered together to form a single statuette.

This metal-man also comes with your choice of two weapons – a rifle and a side arm, though you can purchase more weapons if you’d like to fully outfit his arsenal. Personally, I would need to have both an assault rifle and an energy sword.

The pewter Master Chief sells for $250(USD) over on Etsy. And if gold is your thing, Donald will bling out your Master Chief with 24k gold plating for another $100.

Call of Duty unsurprising tops Xbox Live activity list for 2012

Many gamers played a bunch of different games on Xbox Live throughout 2012, but there are a handful of titles that obviously rise above the rest in terms of activity. Today Microsoft‘s Major Nelson released a list of the top 20 Xbox Live titles of 2012, and we’re seeing some entries that are predictable and others that are somewhat surprising. Care to guess which game landed at the top of the list?

halo4_boxart

If you guessed Black Ops II, you were right. Activision’s latest entry in the Call of Duty series settled at first place for the year, followed in second by Modern Warfare 3. Halo 4 managed to work its way into third, pushing the incredibly popular Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition into fourth place. That Minecraft finished in the top five is important – normally, we’d expect the most-played games of the year to be full retail releases, while Minecraft is an Xbox Live Arcade title.

The original Black Ops (which has been on shelves since November 2010, remember) rounds out the top five, so it seems that only Halo and Minecraft had the player base to challenge the Call of Duty series. Borderlands 2 just missed the top ten with its 11th-place ranking, while it seems that a healthy number of people were playing Skyrim all through the year, as Bethesda’s epic managed to secure 13th place. Despite the fact that it was only released on December 4, Far Cry 3 broke into the list nonetheless, coming in at number 18. Here’s the full list of Xbox Live’s most-played games for 2012:

1. Call of Duty: Black Ops II
2. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3
3. Halo 4
4. Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition
5. Call of Duty: Black Ops
6. FIFA Soccer 13
7. FIFA Soccer 12
8. Battlefield 3
9. Halo: Reach
10. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
11. Borderlands 2
12. Assassin’s Creed III
13. Skyrim
14. Madden NFL 13
15. Gears of War 3
16. NBA 2K13
17. NBA 2K12
18. Far Cry 3
19. Grand Theft Auto IV
20. Forza Motorsport 4

Major Nelson also shared lists of the top Xbox Live Arcade, Xbox Live Indie, and Games For Windows Live titles for 2012. Though Minecraft was pushed out of the top spot on the overall list, it came in at first place on the Xbox Live Arcade list, with CastleMiner Z taking the first place crown for the indie list. Surprisingly, Grand Theft Auto IV was the top Games for Windows Live title of 2012, beating out more recent games like Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition and Batman: Arkham City. If you’d like to see all four full lists, they can be found over on Major Nelson’s blog.

Halo 2 PC multiplayer servers going dark in February

If you’re still enjoying Halo 2 on PC, then we’ve got some sad news for you. In the latest installment of the Halo Bulletin, Halo Waypoint’s Jessica Shea announced that the multiplayer servers for the PC port will be going dark next month. Specifically speaking, players will have until February 15, 2013 to get their multiplayer kicks in, because after that date, Halo 2‘s online multiplayer will be inaccessible.

halo2

Shea clarifies that players will still be able to access multiplayer through LAN, but points out that Halo 2‘s player numbers have “been peaking consistently at approximately 20 players or less.” Hearing that, it’s pretty obvious why Microsoft has opted to shut down the game’s servers, though this news probably stings a bit for players who have a soft spot for Halo 2 on PC. Multiplayer for the Xbox version of Halo 2 was ended back in 2010 when Microsoft pulled the plug on Xbox Live service for its first console.

Despite the fact that Microsoft’s decision to shut off the multiplayer servers for Halo 2 is bound to make at least a few players upset, online multiplayer for both versions was supported for almost six years. That certainly isn’t bad, especially when there are some publishers who seem all too willing to shut down online functionality just a couple of years after release. Of course, if you get the urge to play Halo online after the servers go dark, you can always pick up a copy of Halo 3, Halo: Reach, or Halo 4, all of which still have accessible matchmaking.

Shea’s announcement was hidden in a much longer post about the future of Halo 4‘s multiplayer, among other things. The post reminded us that the first season of Spartan Ops is set to resume on January 21, while players will get to enjoy two new class specializations starting next week: the Pioneer and the Pathfinder, both of which were given a rundown when Microsoft detailed all of the different specializations last year. No word on when the other specializations will become available, so it might not be the best idea to blow through the additional 20 SR levels the Pioneer and Pathfinder classes add to the game.

Halo 4 Cortana Cocktail Might Make You Feel Rampant

I might be a little behind the times, but I just finished the campaign mode of Halo 4 over the holidays. For those of you who haven’t played the game yet, (minor spoiler ahead) Cortana has a little case of something called “rampancy” in which too much information loaded into her program causes her to destabilize and lose her mind. Now you can have a little of the same, when you down this special Cortana-themed cocktail.

halo 4 cortana cocktail

This delightfully blue drink is made up from Blue Curacao, Alize Bleu Passion, UV Blue Vodka, Blueberry Lemonade Mio, and a bit of Sprite or 7UP.  Here’s the full recipe:

Ingredients:
1.5 parts Blue Curacao
2 parts Alizé Bleu Passion
2 parts UV Blue Vodka
1 squeeze Blueberry Lemonade Mio
Lemon Lime soda

Directions: Pour the Blue Curacao over ice into a hurricane or equally sexy tall glass. Float Alizé atop Curacao. Float vodka atop Alizé. Gently pour your lemon lime soda nearing the top. Squeeze a shot of blue concentrated flavoring (Mio). She’s waited a long time for this, John. Savor the moment as if it’s your last.

Between the vodka and the two other alcoholic ingredients, you definitely won’t be feeling any pain after a few of these. Though it might just affect your ability to effectively take down Covenant and Promethean warriors.

The Cortana Cocktail was made by Clint Slowik, and is featured up on The Drunken Moogle, where you can also find Clint’s other Halo concoction, the awesomely-colored Master Chief.
