Leftover Halo 4 features found lurking in game code

We all know that a game changes very frequently during the development process – some features get fully implemented and make it to the finished product, while others are only partially developed and ultimately get left on the cutting room floor. It’s no different with Halo 4, and today we’re finding out that there were a couple particularly cool armor abilities 343 Industries had to do away with before shipping the game. They were discovered by the folks at TheHaloCouncil, who did a little bit of digging in Halo 4‘s code and filmed a video showing off these armor abilities that almost were.

halo4_SWATupdate

Say hello to the Hacker and Teleport armor abilities, which you can see in action with the video posted below. Teleport is pretty self-explanatory, as it lets you jump a short distance almost instantly. As you can imagine, having an armor ability like that would be great for closing the gap quickly so you can get in and perform an assassination before the other player has a chance to react.

The Hacker ability is definitely the coolest of the two, as it allows you to disable the armor abilities of other players. See someone sneaking around with active camouflage on? Use the Hacker to disable their cloak and expose them to the world. The Hacker ability seems like it would go a long way in evening the odds against nearly every other armor ability out there, which might just be why we didn’t see it in the final game.

While the host of the video speculates that these armor abilities might be released in future Halo 4 DLC, a Microsoft representative told Kotaku that these are merely “legacy items” and the studio doesn’t have any plans to implement more armor abilities in the future. While that’s a bummer, it was nice to catch a glimpse of canned features despite the fact that we’ll probably never get to use them in regular gameplay.

Halo 4 Crimson Map Pack available today on Xbox 360

Suit up Spartan, because the Halo 4 Crimson Map Pack launches today on the Xbox Live Marketplace. At 800 MSP, this Map Pack adds three new multiplayer maps to the game, and is the first of three announced DLC map packs. It’s a part of the War Games Map Pass too, which grants you access to all three map packs for 2000 MSP – 400 MSP off the price of purchasing each one separately.

That isn’t a bad deal if you know in advance that you’re going to purchase all three DLC packs, so if you’re big on Halo 4, picking up the War Games Map Pass would be a good move. Crimson tosses the Wreckage, Covenant, and Shatter maps into the mix, along with a dedicated playlist for the three new battlegrounds so you can get acquainted with them quickly. It’s launching just over a month after Halo 4 itself released, so 343 Industries and Microsoft got right to work on the game’s DLC.

Next up we’ll have the Majestic map pack launching in February, which adds three additional maps of its own. Finally, players will have the Castle map pack to look forward to in April, rounding out the trio. Those are the only DLC packs Microsoft and 343 have announced for Halo 4, but then again, they could always choose to surprise players with more DLC if these three packs sell well.

For now, though, just plan on these three map packs hitting in a relatively short time frame. Players will also have a new multiplayer mode called Extraction waiting for them when they sign on today, which will have two teams attacking and defending player-placed beacons. Check out our story timeline below for more on Halo 4!

Halo Series Sells 50 Million Units Since 2001. New Game In Early Development

Halo 4 may not have shared the success Call of Duty: Black Ops II has, especially when you consider the game is exclusive to the Xbox 360. But the series itself has had quite the run as Microsoft announced today 50m units of the entire Halo series have been sold.

Halo debuted on the Xbox back in 2001 and since then has received regular updates all the way to this year’s Halo 4, which earned $220 million in its first 24 hours. Before today’s announcement, the Halo series had sold a total of 46 million units, which leads us to assume Halo 4 has sold a total of 4 million units.

Halo’s popularity has earned an inevitable sequel from Halo 4′s developer, 343 Industries, which the team is currently working on its early development. Aside from the sequel, 343 Industries is currently debating whether or not to deliver a second season of Spartan Ops, which is a game mode that tells a completely different story from the campaign and encourages co-op play.

Halo Energy Sword Lamp Won’t Kill You With One Hit

I’ve been so busy recently that I haven’t yet finished campaign mode on Halo 4, but I’m gradually making my way through all of the missions. One weapon that I have yet to stumble onto (other than in Infinity multiplayer mode) this time is the classic energy sword. I’m sure it’ll turn up sooner or later, as it’s the ultimate melee weapon. But I suppose if I want one right away, I could always go for this energy sword lamp.

The lamp is made from laser-cut acrylic that’s been shaped and polished in the form of the glowing and deadly Covenant weapon. The top part of the lamp is made of transparent blue, while the base is made from translucent dark blue acrylic.

Each lamp is made to order by Pete Belcher of The Back Pack Shoppe, and sells for $75(USD), which seems very reasonable for what it is. Halo fans can order one here.

From the looks of it, the tip of this thing is just as sharp and pointy as the weapon in the game, so don’t pick it up and start swinging it about. You’ll poke your eye out, kid.

Halo 4 map pack release dates reportedly outed

When it comes to Halo 4 DLC, we already know quite a bit. We know that Microsoft and 343 Industries are planning three separate map packs named Crimson, Majestic, and Castle. We also know that the companies are offering a War Games Map Pass for 2,000 MSP, which means that opting for the Map Pass will save you 15% over buying each map pack individually. What we didn’t know, however, is when these map packs would be releasing.

That may have just changed, as a new screenshot from the German Xbox 360 Dashboard apparently lists the release dates for all three map packs. Originally posted over at Halo Council, this screenshot says gives Crimson, Majestic, and Castle release dates of December 10, February 25, and April 1 respectively. If this is true, it means that the first Halo 4 map pack DLC is a mere two weeks away.

We wouldn’t be surprised at all if this is true, but the fact that Castle has a listed release date of April 1 makes this whole thing a little suspicious. April 1, as many of you know, is the worldwide day of pranks, so it’s possible that Microsoft and 343 Industries are having a little fun at the expense of players. In any case, with no official word from Microsoft, it’s hard to say with any certainty that this is legitimate.

If these dates are the real deal and Crimson’s release is really just two weeks away, then we should be getting confirmation from Microsoft and 343 any day now. While we’re hesitant to believe that these are the official release dates, it’s worth pointing out that Microsoft said the three map packs would be releasing in December, February, and April when they were all announced, so that lends some credibility to this rumor. Stay tuned.

Halo Fan Made Kat Armor is out of This Reach

The cool and detailed armor of characters from the Halo universe means it’s quite hard to emulate them in cosplay. Unless you happen to be a pale, short-haired 6’7″ 287 lb. male, in which case you can just come as yourself and say you’re John-117. A cosplayer going by the handle LilTyrant decided to dress up as Kat, and that’s exactly what she did.

For reference, IGN’s Halo Wiki has a screenshot of Kat, who as many of you know is from Halo: Reach. Note that LilTyrant’s costume doesn’t have Kat’s helmet cam and tactical case, but she did say she’ll those later on. We’ll cut her some slack because she wanted to finish this by Halloween, she said she’s still “new to armor making” and because the costume is freakin’ awesome.

Unlike most cosplayers I’ve seen, LilTyrant was kind – and obsessed – enough to document practically every step she took to make her armor. She doesn’t just dress as Kat, she’s as smart as Kat. Head to the 405th Infantry Division to see her guide. Microsoft should hire her to make cosplay versions of the Halo 4 armor.

Master Chief Stained Glass is a Masterpiece of Halo Fan Art

Stained glass seems to be having some sort of a geeky renaissance period. So why shouldn’t Halo get in on the colored translucent glass action? Well, okay then…

master chief stained glass 1

This impeccably detailed Master Chief stained glass window was made by Evan Daniels of Martian Glass Works. It’s just about perfect. The only thing it’s missing is a little glowing blue Cortana floating around and guiding Chief’s way as he takes on the Covenant and countless other nasties.

Measuring in at 50″(H) x 40″(W) and made up out of about 200 pieces of glass, it’s an impressive feat for sure. It took Evan about 70 hours to construct. Of course, all of that work is bound to be worth something, and the big glass Chief is selling for a whopping $3000(USD). But even if you can’t afford it, you should pop on over to Etsy and admire it from afar.

Halo 4 Racks up $220 Million in Global Sales in 24 Hours

I don’t think it will come as a surprise to anyone out there that Halo 4 is already a major success. Microsoft has announced that the launch of the game is the biggest and most successful launch in the franchise’s history. In fact, the game brought in a whopping $220 million globally in the first 24 hours of availability.

halo 4 xb

Microsoft believes that the game is on track to gross more than $300 million in global sales the first week it’s available. The game earned more money on its opening day than the biggest opening day sales in U.S. box office history for a Hollywood blockbuster. That happened to be the movie Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2. Halo 4 also earned more money on its opening day than The Avengers to put things in perspective.

Microsoft also offered a bit of insight into how much time players are spending with Halo 4. During the first five days it was available, over 4 million players played online. Those players spent a total of 31.4 million hours playing the game. Even more impressive is that Microsoft says the entire Halo franchise has racked up over 5 billion hours played since the series first debuted.

Halo 4 launch day sales break $220 million

We all expected Halo 4 to be big, but as it turns out, it’s actually the biggest launch in Halo history. Microsoft announced today that the game managed to rake in $220 million on its first day, and should hit $300 million by the end of its first week. That definitely isn’t chump change, and it looks like fans haven’t abandoned the Halo series yet, despite the change up in developers.

Microsoft says that 4 million people have logged in to play the game since it launched, and it’s certainly possible that even more are playing it when you consider that not everyone has a subscription to Xbox Live or has their console connected to the Internet. We can’t really see the point behind playing Halo solely offline, but we’re sure there are some folks out there who are doing it.

Unsurprisingly, Microsoft doesn’t dish any sales numbers, so we’ll have to wait until the game hits some sort of milestone before Microsoft tells us how many copies have been sold. Still, with expectations for the week coming it at $300 million, it isn’t hard to imagine that Microsoft is selling a healthy amount of copies. The success of Halo 4 also means that Halo 5 will almost certainly happen, though that was another given considering Halo is easily Microsoft’s biggest series.

So, the Halo train continues to pull in the big bucks for Microsoft. Little surprise, but the series will definitely be outshined by tomorrow’s launch of Black Ops II, which promises to be the single biggest release of the year. With hundreds of millions already in its pocket and millions more left to come, though, we doubt Microsoft cares much about the launch of Black Ops II. Have you been playing Halo 4? What do you think of it?
