JXD S5110 Handheld Game Console: The Unholy Marriage of a PSP and Android

While I’m personally holding out for the Archos GamePad, if you absolutely must have an Android 4 gaming device before the holidays, you might want to check 0ut this oddity. The Chinese made JXD 5110 bears more than a passing resemblance to the Sony PSP, but it’s all Android, all the time.

This handheld gaming system runs Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich), and supports 95% of all Android apps out of the box. It’s also got a (single) analog thumbstick, D-Pad, ABXY, Start/Select and shoulder buttons. Games are played on its 800×480 resolution, 5-inch touchscreen, and it’s also got a low-res (0.3 MP) rear camera built in. It’s powered by a an ARM Cortex A9 CPU, and has an ARM Mali400 GPU. It’s got 4GB of on-board storage, and can be expanded via a MicroSD card up with as much as 32GB of storage. Its built-in Wi-Fi supports 802.11g/b/n standards.  It’s also got an HDMI output so you can connect it to your TV.

Of course, the main reason to buy a handheld like this is to play emulators of older gaming systems, and the S5110 can play classic games using any of the numerous Android-based emulators out there. It even comes pre-loaded with several emulators to get you started. While it’s definitely an odd-looking system, it’s available now, and costs under $100(USD) too. You can grab one over on Amazon in either Black or White.

Algiz 10X is one tough tablet PC

You know what happens when you lead a rough-and-tumble lifestyle, most of the time, your devices too, would go through some sort of “torture”, especially when you love nothing better than roughing it out. Others, however, might not be that adventurous as you, but the nature of their job requires them to toughen it out, which is where carrying sensitive consumer electronics is a big no no. What happens when there is a need for a device like a tablet, and yet you tend to be in extremely harsh environments? This is where the Algiz 10X comes in handy, thanks to the Handheld Group who came up with this particular tablet.

The Algiz 10X rugged tablet PC is a powerful device which is able to shrug off tough weather elements and harsh handling, while you can be sure that your eyes won’t end up with a permanent squint while you work on it courtesy of its large, 10.1-inch touchscreen display which is said to deliver the best screen visibility on the market at press time.

Jerker Hellström, CEO of Handheld, said, “The new Algiz 10X is perfectly suited for field professionals who need a rugged tablet computer that is lightweight and built to withstand the harsh conditions that come with all kinds of industry fieldwork, and that can display detailed maps and other visuals even in bright sunlight.”

Just how tough is it? To get a better idea, let us use industry benchmarks as an example. The Algiz 10X is IP65-rated and will definitely meet stringent MIL-STD-810G military standards for protection against dust, water, vibrations, drops, extreme temperatures and varying altitudes. Despite sounding as though it graduated from some sort of military academy, it is no heavyweight, tipping the scales at a mere 1.3 kg (2.9 lbs), while measuring just 32 mm (1.2″) thick – not too shabby where rugged tablet PCs are concerned.

Other hardware specifications include a u-blox GPS receiver and WAAS/EGNOS/MSAS capability, Bluetooth 4.0, WLAN 802.11 b/g/n and it is WWAN Gobi 3000-ready. Not only that, there is an integrated 5-megapixel camera with LED flash, a host of connectivity opportunities, waterproof USB 2.0, VGA and RS232 ports. The Intel Atom N2800 dual-core processor runs the show from underneath the hood alongside 4GB RAM, while the SSD disk can be further expanded thanks to a microSD memory card slot. It might run on Windows 7 Ultimate at the moment, but packs the hardware for some Windows 8 action when the latter arrives. Expect to pick up the Algiz 10X from January next year onwards if you are interested.

Circle Pad Pro for 3DS XL spotted at TGS, we go hands-on (video)

Circle Pad Pro for 3DS XL spotted at TGS, we go handson video

Nintendo is starting to make a habit of quietly releasing products at trade-shows they don’t attend. Kyoto’s premiere gaming outfit still isn’t present on the TGS show floor, but Capcom has once again seen fit to trot out the firm’s latest kit: The Circle Pad Pro for 3DS XL. Just like last year’s model, this beefy cradle puts the already large 3DS XL outside the realm of pocket-ability, trading the handheld’s slim profile for a luxuriously thick grip. Indeed, the fatty accessory makes the console quite comfortable to hold, adding a smooth, slightly contoured back, larger shoulder buttons and, of course, that all important starboard analog pad.

The new Circle Pad’s bulk is slightly more forgivable for the size of its host device. Yes, the attachment makes the XL a bit more unwieldily, but its supersized form already made it a non-contender for most pants pockets. Sadly, the accessory still sports its predecessor’s greatest fault: it blocks the 3DS’ cartridge slot. Gamers will have to get used to undocking their console, or else make a habit of buying more downloadable titles. Mum’s still the word on pricing and availability, but the accessory was shown with a copy of Monster Hunter 4, which is due out in March of next year. We wouldn’t be surprised to see it show up in early spring. Hungry for more? Check out our gallery below for an eyeful, or peek past the break for quick video overview.

Nintendo circle pad for 3DS XL announced in Japan

Nintendo circle pad for 3DS XL announced for Japan Nintendo rather quietly announced that it’ll be bringing the Circle Pad Pro to its colossal 3DS XL handheld. The release doesn’t go into the specifics beyond confirming the eventual arrival of the accessory, which adds a second analog stick (and a few more centimeters of heft) onto the already roomy device. There’s no word on pricing or availability, with both currently marked as “undecided,” but hopefully the company will make its mind up before the start of the holiday season. The original Circle Pad add-on cost ¥1,500 ($19.50), so we expect this will run about the same amount. It’s unclear thus far if the device will launch outside of Japan, but we expect to hear more shortly.

PS Vita and PS3 cross-buy: more discounts, less freebies

PS Vita and PS3 cross-buy: more discounts, less freebies

Sony’s PS3 / Vita cross-buy program might not be as simple as “buy one, get one” after all. Taking the stage at its pre-TGS press event, Sony announced a new Hot Shots Golf game as one of the program’s first adopters — citing a price reduction, rather then a free game, for users who pick up either the PS3 / Vita version of the title. In contrast, Sony stated at Gamescom that buyers of PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale and Ratchet & Clank: Full Frontal Assault would receive a second copy of the game for free upon purchase, indicating that cross-buy discounts may vary from title to title. Remember kids: just because you bought it once, doesn’t mean you won’t have to buy it again.

Sony’s PlayStation Portable dropping by ¥3,000 to ¥14,800

Just because Sony’s focus during the Tokyo Game Show is on its two newest consoles, the Vita and the PlayStation 3, doesn’t mean the company’s forgotten about the PlayStation Portable. During its press conference this evening, Sony dropped ¥3,000 (about $40) from the base price of the PSP in Japan, putting the console at ¥14,800 (about $190). It’s unclear if any price drop will affect North American or European consumers, but we’ll update as we find out more.

Handheld Nautiz X1: Meet the world’s toughest smartphone

If you have a knack of dropping your smartphone too often, the regular offerings in the market may not be good enough for you. Most of the current-generation high-end smartphones tend to be pretty sensitive towards regular falls and other such incidents.

Such is certainly not the case with Handheld’s recently-announced Nautiz X1, which is being touted as the world’s toughest smartphone. There is definitely some credibility to this claim since Nautiz X1 meet the military standards when it comes to enduring high drops, extreme temperatures and humidity. (more…)

Neo Geo X handheld gets standalone $130 price tag

If you wanted to relive your past arcade glories, but weren’t looking for a whole peripheral package, the Neo Geo X is now going to let you do that. While the forthcoming handheld was expected to arrive bundled with nostalgia-tinged hardware, a lower-priced solo handheld is also on the cards. Priced at $130, the makers aren’t divulging any more detail on 4.3-inch handheld’s precise launch date, but we’d guess that the single unit will match the pricier bundle’s December launch date.
