Project Sheild origins detailed 'NVIDIA had everything it needed to build a new kind of gaming device all along'

We got our first look at Project Shield — the NVIDIA-built gaming handheld — during CES 2013, where the company surprised everyone with the previously unheard of device. It’s essentially the marriage of an Xbox 360-style GamePad to a 5-inch screen, all powered by NVIDIA’s brand new Tegra 4 mobile CPU. But the device’s origins aren’t quite as glamorous as its form, even in prototype stage. The first prototype, assembled in early 2012, was little more than a game controller fastened to a smartphone with wood,” reads NVIDIA’s boldly worded blog post detailing the history of Project Shield. That initial prototype saw heavy iteration across 2012, eventually culminating in the device unveiled last month.

However, just 10 days prior, the device was still locked away in NVIDIA’s Silicon Valley development offices, shrouded in secrecy. Even the models we eventually tried out were what NVIDIA reps repeatedly referred to as, “a project, not a product.” To take the device from prototype to production, NVIDIA’s modeling assembly on work its lead engineers did by hand just before CES. “Over the holiday break, NVIDIA’s engineers took over a small piece of floor space at a Silicon Valley contract manufacturer to assemble the units that would be shown off at CES,” the piece says. Of course, NVIDIA’s engineers won’t be hand-building the “tens of thousands more units” that arrive later this year — a team of “quick-turn manufacturing specialists” at NVIDIA is handling that. We assume the former group will be catching up on much needed sleep.

The four biggest smartphone applications in social — Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook, and Foursquare — are headed to BlackBerry’s latest software platform, BlackBerry 10, via BlackBerry World. Not exactly a surprise considering that somewhere in the ballpark of 70,000 apps are planned for BB 10 at launch, eh? The first three were demonstrated on-stage during today’s BB 10 launch event, and were all shown as integrated with BB Hub (as partially revealed in a recent leak).

We’re also seeing Angry Birds Star Wars featured on BBW, but we expect to hear a lot more about applications any minute now.

Research in Motion now known as BlackBerry

RIM CEO Thorsten Heins just announced that Research in Motion is no longer known as “RIM,” and will be simply known as “BlackBerry” going forward. “We have reinvented the company, and we want to represent this in our brand,” Heins said. The company’s new tagline, as seen above, is “One brand. One promise.” Of course, given that RIM BlackBerry only makes BlackBerry devices, that’s the logic there.

“We have transformed ourselves inside and out, and we have defined a revision, a dedication to the boundless opportunities in mobile computing,” Heins added. “Our customers use BlackBerry. Our employees work for BlackBerry, and our shareholders are owners of BlackBerry. From today on, we are BlackBerry everywhere in the world,” he said. The company’s stock ticker is also reflecting the new name (it’s now “BBRY”), so the change is being reflected literally everywhere.

Epic Games’ first internal initiative to produce an Unreal Engine 3 project on Android is complete, nearly three years after a similar initiative produced the Epic Citadel demo. That same demo is being employed on Android, albeit with one shiny new feature: benchmarking. The new mode enables users to test framerate, quality settings, and resolution details — it’s an exclusive for the Android version. The iOS version also saw an update today across its various iterations, enabling support for higher-res displays (the original app launched in September 2010 and has seen little in the update department since).

While Epic’s Unreal Engine 3 has supported Android for some time, the release of the internal app means, “we’ve invested in plenty of QA testing against a wide range of devices, and we’ve executed the necessary profiling required for shipping Android games,” an Epic Games rep tells us. Music, MIDI and mobile? Seen that before, right? Well, yeah, but sometimes something comes along that surprises everyone. Artiphon’s Instrument 1 is one such thing. And after all, there’s more than one way to crack a nut. Artiphon’s method involves creating a high-quality muli-instrument device that uses an iPhone or iPod touch as its brain. So, this is no plastic (bear with us) “appcessory.” The Instrument 1 is made out of special quality African hardwood, and centers around an intentionally ambiguous design. There is a pair of high-quality custom speakers that give impressive 30W onboard sound. There is, of course, a line out and MIDI in / out too. The prototype we saw today doesn’t have a built-in battery, but final production models will, making this a truly portable, complete solution. Dr Mike Butera, the firm’s founder, was keen to explain to us that this is intended not to replicate one specific device (though it does a great job of guitar, violin, banjo and more), but rather to enable musicians to be able to work in a way they want to. The Instrument 1 works with any core MIDI enabled app, but there are plans to release a companion app for more detailed / custom mappings in the future. We got a private tour of the device, to tip-toe past the break for more.

The first thing we noticed was how authentic it felt. Authentic what? Well, ok, that’s a little harder to explain. It definitely felt more like holding an instrument, than a MIDI device or an accessory component though. The oiled wood finish, metal speaker grilles and overall quality of the device make it feel like something you’d wield with care. The iPhone section is also pleasantly discreet. Sure, it takes somewhat center place, but at the same time keeps it out of the way when you’re playing. Under the neck you’ll also find some additional controls that steer the Instrument 1 in more dedicated instrument directions (bass mode for fret tapping, banjo mode with arpeggios etc). The small black box below the iPhone housing serves as a strum-surface (or when in violin mode, the area you “bow”), and the neck section is largely akin to a guitar neck, but when approached creatively, can be used in all manner of ways, such as drum-pads when resting on your lap. For those that want to know, it’s currently sporting a 30-pin connector, but has room enough so that you can also use it with a lightning adaptor. There’s also a physical volume control and a USB port.

As for the MIDI options… there are plenty. Polyphonic aftertouch, vibrato, versatile modulation and mapping, to name a few. There is an octave switch on the neck, also, so that you can get a wide range of musical notes with ease. Mike showed us that as there are two sensors on each neck-note, you can effectively cram two octaves into the same space too, should this better suit your needs. As mentioned above, currently this is the third prototype, but full production is expected soon. How much, then, does Artiphon want for the Instrument 1? That’ll be $800 when it eventually rolls out towards the end of this year. A tall price for a MIDI controller perhaps, but you’ll be replacing your entire band at the same time. Just don’t tell them yet. Go south for the demo video.

AT&T lost $3.9 billion in Q4 2012, earned $7.3 billion profit for the year

AT&T boasts TKTK results for Q4 2012,

American telecommunications giant AT&T announced its Q4 2012 financial results this afternoon, which reflect $3.9 billion in losses for Ma Bell’s final fiscal quarter of last year. However, the company’s also posting “record smartphone sales” of 10.2 million last quarter — “the most by any US carrier,” it claims. As it’s Q4, the results for the full year are also in; AT&T revealed $7.3 billion in net income across the entirety of 2012. That’s what we’d call a marked change from last year’s losses.

In terms of phones, AT&T activated 8.6 million new iPhone customers (16 percent of which were totally new to the company), up 1 million over 2011’s Q4 and nearly double that of Q3 2012. No specific number is given on Android sign-ups, but AT&T’s calling it the “best-ever sales quarter for Android smartphones” — when those 8.6 million iPhones are subtracted from the overall Q4 2012 sales of phones (10 million), it’s not looking so good for non-Apple built devices. On the U-verse front, the latest lifetime subscriber numbers reflect 8 million TV and high-speed internet users, with 192K joining in Q4 2012.

Operating revenues just barely exceeded those of 2011, reaching $127.4 billion, offset by $114.4 billion in expenses (down $3 billion over 2011). Customer numbers also grew in 2012, by a healthy 1.086 million people, the vast majority of which are contract customers (approximately 70 percent). Needless to say, things seem to have gone pretty okay for AT&T in 2012, despite a rocky final quarter. Not too bad for the least loved mobile carrier in the US.

Neo Geo X still in production, Tommo plans to add 'more games, peripherals and software updates'

Despite reports claiming that Tommo Inc’s portable re-launch of the Neo Geo had ceased production, that is apparently not the case. “There has been a recent rumor about the end of the production of the NEOGEO X System. This rumor is incorrect,” Tommo told us in a statement. The reports apparently stem from ending production of the Limited Edition Neo Geo X Gold System, which Tommo says, “was always planned to be a limited edition product.” Beyond just continued production of the standard model, Tommo adds that it’ll be supporting the device with, “more games, peripherals, and software updates.” The Limited Edition, however, will likely start to disappear by some point in April, when the company expects final stock to begin shipping. “Given the popularity of the NEOGEO X format, we don’t expect this stock to last long,” the company notes. There has been a recent rumor about the end of the production of the NEOGEO X System. This rumor is incorrect. Tommo will be continuing to support the NEOGEO X format going forward with more games, peripherals and software updates, as well as more units of the console hardware. The NEOGEO X Gold System Limited Edition Collection Series that includes Ninja Masters, was always planned to be a limited edition product. We are currently manufacturing our final run of this Limited Edition Collection Series and our distributors worldwide expect to have the final stock in April. Given the popularity of the NEOGEO X format, we don’t expect this stock to last long.

Neo Geo X production allegedly discontinued, additional carts to be released as planned

The Neo Geo X was the subject of so much talk and so many renders, we thought it was destined to be vaporware. We were proved wrong and it was released in December, but if Japanese site Gamer is correct, production of the retro handheld-come-console has already been discontinued. Apparently, this isn’t due to affect the release of add-on cartridges for the platform — although not all owners are in need of more games. We reached out to Neo Geo’s PR folks and they didn’t confirm or deny the report, but said they’ll have more information for us shortly.

Nintendo’s Wii U-based Miiverse social network is also getting a big update later this year, including user-created communities, more than one community per title, updated usability, and a more advanced filtering system. That’s in addition to a mobile phone-based application, all arriving in 2013 — you’ll be able to access the Miiverse via mobile phone a bit earlier. “Initially the experience will be browser-based, but Nintendo plans to create a dedicated Miiverse app in the future,” the official PR reads.

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata announced the updates during a Nintendo Direct video presentation this morning, though he didn’t give a concrete date for the Miiverse updates or the mobile app (“spring” was the closest he got, and that’s only applicable to mobile access, not the app). He did say that you’ll sign into the mobile app using your Nintendo Network ID, and be able to access (and interact) with the Miiverse on-the-go.

REDMOND, Wash.–(BUSINESS WIRE)– Nintendo President Satoru Iwata unleashed Wii U news in an installment of Nintendo Direct today as he outlined Nintendo’s future plans for the console. Iwata revealed how the Wii U launch lineup will be bolstered by a long list of top game franchises headed for the new console. These are games that longtime players and newcomers alike will love to play, and everyone will be experiencing them in new ways, thanks to the integrated second-screen experiences enabled by the Wii U GamePad controller. Iwata also detailed a number of enhancements designed to make the Wii U game experience more social, even if people are not playing in the same room.

“The fun of video games is not only just playing games, but also sharing experiences together with people – even though they live far away, their skill levels are different or their experience does not happen at the same time,” Iwata said. “We want Wii U to be the system that brings everyone together.”

Two Zelda Games: Eiji Aonuma, the producer of The Legend of Zelda series, revealed two entries in the series for Wii U.
Super Mario is on His Way: The Nintendo EAD Tokyo Software Development team that created the Super Mario Galaxy games for Wii and Super Mario 3D Land for Nintendo 3DS is working on a new 3D Mario action game for Wii U. The game is scheduled to be playable at this year’s E3.
Buckle Up!: Nintendo is also working on a new installment of the hit Mario Kart franchise. This game is also planned to be playable at E3.
Yarn Yoshi: The team that created Kirby’s Epic Yarn is hard at work on the first console game to feature Yoshi as the main character since 1998’s Yoshi’s Story for Nintendo 64. Takashi Tezuka, director of Yoshi’s Island and Yoshi’s Story, is supervising the development of the new game, which is set in a fanciful world of yarn and textiles.
Wii Fit U Communities: New features coming to Wii Fit U include letting players create user communities on Miiverse from within the game. Community members can discuss exercises, BMI or weight changes and other health topics with other players as a way to encourage one another to reach their fitness goals. Similar functionality for other games is also planned.
Pikmin 3 Photos: The upcoming Pikmin 3 game includes a feature that lets players use the Wii U GamePad as a camera to share the same perspective as Pikmin and take close-up pictures of landscapes and creatures in the game and share them in Miiverse.
The Party Continues: A new installment in the Wii Party franchise is planned to launch this summer. The game features various play styles, including one that lets both players compete head-to-head using just the GamePad.
RPG Mashup: Nintendo has begun many collaborations with outside development partners to bring the best franchises and experiences to Wii U. In one such partnership, Nintendo and Atlus are working on a collaboration that features the Fire Emblem and Shin Megami Tensei franchises. More on the Way: Iwata shared a new trailer for The Wonderful 101. That game and GAME & WARIO are scheduled to launch in the first half of 2013. Iwata also showed a new video for Bayonetta 2. That game and the new Super Smash Bros. installment are still on the way, but will need more development time before details can be revealed.
Virtual Console

Virtual Console for Wii U: A spring system update will add Virtual Console software to the Nintendo eShop for Wii U. The service will launch right after the spring update and will include a selection of NES and Super NES games, with Game Boy Advance games to be added in the future. The prices for NES and Super NES Virtual Console games for Wii U will be the same as they were for the Virtual Console on Wii. People who have already purchased the Wii version of a certain NES or Super NES Virtual Console game and transferred it to their Wii U console can buy the enhanced Wii U version of the same game for the reduced price of $1 for NES games and $1.50 for Super NES games.
Classic Games for 30 Cents! To celebrate the 30th anniversary of the release of the Famicom in Japan (which was known as the NES in the United States), Nintendo is making one NES or Super NES game available each month now through July at the anniversary price of just 30 cents. Each game will be available at that price for 30 days, and the first is the NES game Balloon Fight, which is now available in the Nintendo eShop for Wii U.

Miiverse Expands to Smartphones: Starting this spring, people will be able to browse Miiverse from their smartphones. Initially the experience will be browser-based, but Nintendo plans to create a dedicated Miiverse app in the future.
System Updates: Two major updates are on the way, one in the spring and one in the summer. The updates will introduce a wide range of functionality, such as Virtual Console capabilities and shortening the time it takes users to launch software or return to the menu screen.
