Windows Phone 8’s YouTube app goes from glorified bookmark to full application in latest update

Windows Phone 8's YouTube app goes from glorified bookmark to full application in latest update

The Windows Phone 8 YouTube app has been woefully underutilized, acting more or less as a bookmark that redirects users to the web. No more, as the app’s getting a major update today that makes it act more like a standard WP8 app — you can pin various components right into your Live Tile set and play videos (as music) in the background, even when your phone’s locked. Standards like social sharing and search are also in there, and a “new and innovative playlist design” rounds out the refresh. Perhaps the Microsoft / Google relationship is mending? We can’t be sure, but this is certainly one step in the right direction. We’ve dropped the full list of new features beyond the break, and you can grab the app update for yourself right here.

Nintendo now selling refurbished DSi XL and 3DS units for $100 and up

Nintendo now selling refurbished 3DS and DSi XL

It’s easy for us to go shopping for a refurbished Nintendo handheld at stores and auction houses, but not if we’re looking for a huge bargain: small discounts and dodgy quality often make it wiser to buy new instead. Nintendo has just offered us some better reasons to scrimp and save by quietly offering both the DSi XL and 3DS through its refurb shop. The used (and occasionally bruised) systems respectively start at $100 and $130, or $30 and $40 less than they’d normally cost — enough to justify splurging on a game or two. While the selection is currently scarce, we’ll set that qualm aside when everything gets the same year-long warranty as a new unit. About the only debate left is whether or not we’re looking for a dedicated game machine in the first place.

Make your PlayStation 3 look that much more like a Terminator robot with a ‘Metallic Gray’ DualShock 3

Make your PlayStation 3 look that much more like a Terminator robot with 'Metallic Gray' DualShock 3

Tired of how much your PlayStation 3 doesn’t look like a Terminator robot? Us too, especially given that hilariously mechanical new top-loading disc drive cover. Thankfully, Sony sympathizes with our plight, announcing this week that its “Metallic Gray” DualShock 3 controller for the PlayStation 3 will arrive in the United States in a few months (it’s been available in Japan for some time). On June 3rd, the controller becomes available for the standard DS3 price of $54.99, and interested parties can pre-order right this second if they so choose. Of course, we don’t anticipate a shortage when they arrive this June, but it’s always possible that a T-800 will be sent back from the future to accessorize. In which case, you pre-order folks end up looking pretty good.

Verizon’s Samsung Galaxy S 4 up for pre-order starting tomorrow (update: $199.99 after rebate)

Verizon's Samsung Galaxy S 4 up for pre-order starting tomorrow

You’ve already read our review and you’re still convinced you need Samsung’s latest Galaxy S smartphone as soon as humanly possible, eh? Well if you’re on Verizon (or you’d like to be), the Galaxy S 4 goes up for pre-order starting tomorrow according to a tweet from Verizon’s Twitter account. Of course, when you’ll get it is another question altogether — last we heard was “sometime in May,” so take that as you will. May is pretty soon, right? In any case, you won’t immediately be able to purchase the GS 4 anywhere: Sprint is reporting delays until some unknown date, while T-Mo-‘s version isn’t arriving until April 29. Meanwhile, AT&T is still planning for an April 25th launch for pre-order customers, and in-store on April 27th.

Update: Verizon PR rep Ken Muche has also confirmed on Twitter that the phone will run $199.99 after a $50 mail-in rebate on the usual two-year contract.

German court dismisses Nokia patent claim against HTC, HTC ‘delighted’

In HTC and Nokia’s ongoing patent litigation, one patent infringement claim against HTC was dismissed today by the District Court of Mannheim, Germany. The patent in question — regarding “a communication network terminal for accessing internet” — describes a “terminal” that can access the internet.

As FOSS Patents points out, today’s dismissal was part of an ongoing collaboration between Google and Android phone makers who’ve been targeted by Nokia over claims against the Google Play store. “Nokia had alleged that Android’s app architecture centered around the Google Play store infringes the ‘016 patent because of the way it allows third-party app developers to provide data to the end-user devices on which their programs run via a Google-operated server,” the site notes. In that regard, today’s dismissal marked a victory for Google beyond HTC — though HTC issued a statement this afternoon exclaiming its “delight” over the court’s ruling. Nokia has yet to return our request for comment.

Aereo headed to Boston on May 15th, open access begins May 30th

Aereo headed to Boston on May 15th, open access begins May 30th

Good news, Bostonians: yours is the second major US city to get Aereo live television access via the web, and it’s starting on May 15th. Aereo announced its next city expansion this morning, and said the service will go live to pre-registered parties on May 15th. It will eventually become widely available to Boston’s “designated market area,” which includes “more than 4.5 million consumers in 15 counties in Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Vermont.” We’ve got the full list of counties after the break if you’re interested.

Of course, this is just the tip of the iceberg for Aereo, which has plans for expansion in 22 cities just this year. The OTA network internet streaming TV service launched in New York City early last year. Traditional broadcast networks have voiced concern over Aereo’s TV model, even threatening to move to cable should the nascent internet company gets its way in an ongoing legal battle.

WhereverTV streaming service still exists, is now available on iOS

WhereverTV streaming service still exists, is now available on iOS

Don’t let the name fool ya — “WhereverTV” wasn’t on any iOS devices until this morning when the Neuros-powered streaming global television service got an App Store launch. It’s intended for a wide variety of iOS devices — the iPhone 3GS through the 5, as well as iPod Touches and iPads running iOS 4.3 or newer — and offers access to WhereverTV free international TV streaming options, as well as paid options for Greek, Moroccan, and Arabic programming (the app’s been available on Android devices for some time now).

Users aren’t limited by connection, either, as even 3G signal is supported by the app; of course, we wouldn’t suggest you go depending on that option, but it will function should you try. WhereverTV is also promising updates in the future, such as DVR scheduling and playback, as well as more free channels. That is, in addition to the company’s ongoing quest to make good on its name.

Microsoft reiterates that Windows 8 could see small(er) devices soon

Microsoft reiterates that Windows 8 could see smaller devices soon

What’s an outgoing Microsoft executive to do on his last earnings call as CFO? Utter something that’d probably get the incoming CFO fired. Kidding aside, the outfit’s own Peter Klein saw fit to reiterate something we’d heard back in March — that Windows 8 is destined for smaller devices. To date, there isn’t a Windows 8-based slate on the market south of 10-inches, but as Apple, ASUS, Google and Samsung have found, people tend to like tablets that can be held with a single hand. Of course, the “coming soon” angle definitely adds a time stamp (albeit a vague one) that we didn’t have before, but we’re still no closer to figuring out what kinds of devices we’re to expect. A diminutive tablet? A smartwatch? A phone?

Earlier this week, Terry Myerson — corporate vice president of Microsoft’s Windows Phone division — admitted that the wearables space was undoubtedly an exciting one, though he wouldn’t go so far as to affirm that any of the code he oversaw was being tested on the arm. Of course, rumors have been running wild since Windows Phone‘s introduction that Microsoft would eventually push WP aside in favor of just using Windows on everything, so we suppose that’s another (far out) possibility. Wild imaginations are advised to contribute their best guesses in comments below. (But seriously, keep it sane. Thanks.)

Circle Pad Pro accessory will ruin your Nintendo 3DS XL’s silhouette for $20

Circle Pad Pro accessory will ruin your Nintendo 3DS XL's silhouette for $20

Is it worth adding a lop-sided $20 piece of plastic to your already-substantial 3DS XL in order to gain a second analog thumb stick? It’s a good question and finally one worth asking now that Nintendo has announced that the currently Japan-only Circle Pad Pro for the XL will start shipping in the States tomorrow. When we went hands-on last year, we found that it added predictable amounts of girth and also blocked the cartridge port, but compensated by making the handheld more comfortable to use, not least by adding larger shoulder buttons as well as the thumb stick. It’s also worth pointing out that the smaller 3DS version of the accessory enabled better controls for left-handed players in Kid Icarus, so there could be some subtler benefits too. We’ve embedded our hands-on video after the break, so you just need to hold a $20 bill up against your screen and decide which looks better.

Luigi edition Nintendo 3DS LL gives Mario’s brother his due, but only in Japan

Nintendo 3DS LL Luigi edition

There must be some kind of unstated rule that Nintendo can never give the US a special edition handheld without releasing some Japan-focused models. While the company was busy promising Americans an Animal Crossing 3DS XL of their very own, it was also introducing a Luigi edition 3DS LL for its home country as part of its “Year of Luigi” theme — not fair, Nintendo. The system is decked out in a camouflage-like pattern that pays tribute to Mario’s oft-neglected sibling, and it should ship with a preloaded copy of Mario and Luigi: Dream Team just to drive the point home. Local gamers will get the distinctly-patterned 3DS LL on June 18th, but there’s no word on an XL equivalent for the US so far. We’ll just have to make do with Mario-colored devices instead.
