Girls Won’t Be Able to Resist this Rainbow Resistor Bracelet

It’s been a while since I did any serious circuit board hacking, but back in the day I saw my share of electronic components. One of my favorite parts was always the resistor – not because of its rudimentary electrical properties – but because its value could always be identified through a convenient color-coding scheme. In fact, I think at some point I had actually memorized a resistor color chart. Of course, now my mind is feeble, and I couldn’t tell the difference between a 22 ohm and a 2200 ohm. While I don’t personally wear bracelets, I’m still highly compelled by this nifty bracelet made from colorful resistors.

Artist Megan Nissen of Techcycled carefully selects resistors and assembles these nifty “ladder” style bracelets which have a rainbow of resistor colors. While the bracelets are definitely geeky, they’re also elegant, with sparkly Swarovski crystals and finished with a nice silver toggle clasp to hold it on your wrist.

The Rainbow Resistor Bracelet sells for $125(USD) over on Etsy. While you’re over there, be sure to check out Techcycled complete collection of  jewelry fabricated from recycled electronic components and wires.

Resistance is futile. There, I said it.

Mars Curiosity Rover Wood Model: Curious Why I Don’t Have This on My Desk Yet

While most of us will never get to visit the red and dusty surface of Mars, we have been afforded the ability to get a first-hand view of the planet, courtesy of NASA’s Curiosity Rover. And while we’ll never get a chance to see the Curiosity itself up close and personal, you can now have your own mini-Rover on your desktop.

Designer Arnold Patrick Martin created this awesome model of the Curiosity Rover using 120 individual pieces cut not with a scroll saw. It’s made from 1/8″ MDF plywood, and measures about 10″ long. It ships in several easily assembled sections to ensure that it doesn’t get broken in shipment.

Best of all, you can get this without spending billions on a space program to launch you to Mars. All you need is $150(USD) and the ability to click this link.

Bioshock Infinite Songbird Gets Cute, Cuddly and Plush

The Songbird in BioShock Infinite is one intimidating character. So it was only a matter of time before somebody tried to tone it down a little bit and make him/her/it a bit more family-friendly.

While this version of the Songbird doesn’t have light-up eyes, it more than makes up for it by being soft and cuddly. It was made by Cherry Kiss with a body of hand-stitched microsuede, and has handmade clay buttons, and hand-painted details.

While it’s not as massive as the one in the game, this Songbird is still much bigger than the collectible version that comes with the Ultimate Songbird Edition, measuring in at 12-inches-tall, with a 20-inch wingspan.

R2-D2 Leather Wallet Holds the Debit Cards You Were Looking for

As editor of both Technabob and The Awesomer, the number of submissions I get for “unique,” minimal, RFID-blocking wallets over on Kickstarter has gotten ridiculous. But just when I thought I’d never post another wallet again, Popov Leather has made me once again believe in humanity.

r2 d2 wallet 1

Sure, it won’t hold your iPhone, or prevent your RFID chips from being hacked, but this wallet has a hand-tooled image of R2-D2 on the front. How could you not want one? And just like an actual droid, it’s made from high quality 4oz. cowhide, lined with 30z. calfskin and card pockets made from 20z. pigskin. Ok, I made that part up about droids being made from leather.

Each wallet is handmade, so it’ll take a couple of weeks to get yours. So bleep-bloop on over to Etsy and order yours now, before the Jawas come along and take them all so they can sell them out of the back of a sandcrawler.

Champagne Cork Darth Vader: Let’s Toast to the Dark Side

The thing I love about the intersection of geekdom and art is that we end up with some really ingenious and non-traditional mediums for creativity. For example, what was once an innocent champagne cork has been transformed into the ultimate evil – Darth Vader.

DIYer SJ Roth took an ordinary cork and embellished it with markers, clay, fabric, foam rubber, and even a little LED lightsaber to create the cutest little Vader you’ll see today.

The Butler Dock Empties Your Pockets

Everyone needs a place to stow the stuff that fills their pockets. As for myself, I tend to leave my keys in my pockets at all times, because I’ve forgotten them before, my smartphone is near me most of the day, and I usually keep my wallet on a cupboard in my bedroom. However, the Butler looks like a good centralized location for all of your stuff so you don’t lose track of it.

the butler smartphone dock wallet

Designed by Curtis Micklish, the wall-mounted Butler will fit your wallet and keys in its top cubby, and your smartphone on the side slot, letting it do double-duty as a clock. There’s a concealed space for your charging cord, glasses, hats, scarves, or whatever other items you absolutely need to carry with you during the day. The backside has a section to route your charging cord and extension cord, in case your are mounting it farther away from an outlet.

While the default slot will hold any iPhone, you can also order it for a Samsung Galaxy if you’d like.

Legend of Zelda Handmade Teapot: A Link to the Pot & Five Cups

This beautiful ceramic teapot was handmade by Etsy seller/Zelda fan/punk potter Lauren Russell. She made it lovingly using white earthenware clay then carefully glazed it with non-toxic glazes. And Link wouldn’t think twice about breaking it open for a chance of scoring a rupee.

Aside from the cool green color, it also a golden Triforce on one side and the red logo found on Link’s Hylian Shield in Twilight Princess on the other side. It can hold about 5 cups of liquid and is dishwasher safe.

LittleBun Clothespin Dolls: Stick a Pin in ‘Em, They’re Fun

Etsy is home to all sorts of fun, cute and geeky handmade stuff, and these creations by Little Bun satisfy all three of those criteria in spades. She makes little people and characters based on pop culture figures using clothespins as their bodies.

There are tons of great designs up in her shop, but my personal favorites have to be the Bob Ross doll (and his happy little trees), as well as the Sheldon Cooper Big Bang Theory doll, complete with Flash t-shirt. That said, the one with Walter (John Goodman) from The Big Lebowski is pretty sweet too. And check out the tiny unibrow on Frida Kahlo. Check out a bunch of Little Bun’s clothespin dolls in the gallery below:

Optimus Prime Nutcracker Will Transform Your Nuts into Rubble

Christmas may be more than 9 months away, but that doesn’t mean you can’t start preparing early, right? Actually, who says nutcrackers are only good for the holidays anyhow – especially when they look like this?

optimus prime nutcracker

Yep, that’s an Optimus Prime nutcracker. It was handmade by Bart Sandel of Art by Bart, and I can think of no better way to crack into your nuts but with an Autobot. Though Soundwave might be able to smash through them just using the sounds from his mighty tape deck. Optimus Nutcracker stands 15.5 inches-tall, and 10.5 inches-wide, which should be plenty big enough to crack even the toughest of nuts.

optimus prime nutcracker 2

The Optimus Prime nutcracker is for sale over on Etsy for $400(USD), which could also buy you about 75 pounds of already shelled nuts and an Optimus Prime action figure.
