Fire Extinguisher Bag is Smokin’ Hot

While firefighting gear isn’t exactly the most stylish and comfortable stuff to wear, I think we can make an exception for this cool bag, made up to look like a fire extinguisher.

fire extinguisher bag

It’s made by the artisans at Russia’s KruKru Studio, using 100% wool felt. The 21″+ long red canister has ample capacity for your small personal accessories, wallet, keys, gadgets, etc. – and you can be pretty confident that they’ll never catch on fire if you’re transporting them inside of an extinguisher. The bag has a nice long strap, and can be worn either like a messenger bag, or carried as a large purse.

This unique and whimsical piece can be found over on Etsy for $150(USD), where pyromaniacs can also find a matching bag that looks like a gas can.

Video Game Pasta Bowl: Spaghetti Invaders?

If you know me, you know two of my greatest loves are video games and carbs. Now, I can enjoy these two pleasant pastimes simultaneously, thanks to this video game inspired pasta bowl.

space invaders pasta bowl 1

Clay artist Keith Phillips of Mudstuffing created this wheel-thrown stoneware pasta bowl and embellished it with screenprinted images of Space Invaders and an Atari 2600 joystick. Notice how the largest invader is trapped under a big glass dome? Why wasn’t that a weapon in the original game? It sure seems more humane than blowing them away with a laser cannon.

So if you like your spaghetti served with a side of Space Invaders, head on over to Etsy now, where you can grab this video game pasta bowl for $42(USD).

Felt Star Wars Creations: Stitch Wars

As you know, it’s pretty hard for us to pass up fun Star Wars items around these parts, so when I saw these quirky felt Star Wars plushes over on Etsy, I had to oblige and post them.

felt jawa r2 d2

They’re made by E. Binard, and they’re some of the cutest Star Wars creations I’ve seen. You can choose from a felt Jawa, R2-D2 or Yoda, but I personally dig the hand-stitched AT-AT and Millennium Falcon. I bet that it could even make the Kessel Run in under twelve parsecs.

The felt Admiral Ackbar is pretty nifty too – though the fishhead will constantly be reminding you that whatever you’re planning on doing is a trap.

Prices for these handmade Star Wars felt creations range from $40 to $195 (USD) depending on the size and complexity of the design. Check them all out over on E. Binard’s Etsy shop.

Nyan Cat Necklace Poops a Rainbow of Awesome Around Your Neck

My love for on-screen cats began when I discovered the Neko cat screenmate almost a decade and a half ago. I know they’re not the same cat, but when I saw this Nyan cat necklace, I was immediately reminded of Neko. (If my memory serves me right, I was running Windows ’95 at the time. Talk about ancient.)

Nyan Cat NecklaceEnough nostalgia, though, because this awesome Nyan cat necklace calls for your attention. Over the last 18 months, the Nyan cat has spawned a meme and thousands of video, photos, and related art, this necklace included.

The Nyan necklace was handmade by Olga of OlechckaDesign using polymer clay, which was then attached to a 12-inch chain so you can show your love for the Nyan cat loud and proud.

The necklace is up for sale on OlechckaDesign’s Etsy shop for $25 (USD).

Dalek Plush Baby Toys are Too Cute to Exterminate Us (or Are They?)

If there’s one word you don’t usually picture when you think about Daleks, it’s “cute”. But these plush Daleks are the cutest Daleks I’ve ever laid eyes on.

plush daleks 2

They’re made by crafter Fassbaby out of 100% acrylic baby yarn (sounds cruel),  stuffed with fiber fill, and are safe for infants who don’t know how evil a these cyborgs can truly be. They come in a variety of soft and soothing colors, and are just the thing to keep future Time Lords on their toes. Also, these are the only Daleks I know with jingly-jangly, timey-wimey bells inside of them.

You can find the Dalek plushies over on Etsy for $18 to $25(USD) each, depending on size. Grab ‘em up before Davros rises from the ashes of the Crucible, and commands them to exterminate us all.

NES Controller Ceramic Mug: Push Start for More Coffee

Due to medical reasons, I’ve recently had to give up one of my favorite vices – caffeine – but I still like to drink the occasional cup of decaf and imagine that it’s the real thing. The next time I break my coffee mug, I know exactly which one I’m going to order.

nintendo mug

This handmade, wheel-thrown ceramic mug is made from white stoneware clay, and is inspired by the classic 8-bit NES gamepad controller. It’s the perfect place for gamers to keep their joe in between rounds of Duck Hunt and Super Mario Bros. I just love the dimensional A/B buttons and D-Pad on the side of the mug. I think I’d be trying to push them whenever I picked it up to take a sip.

It was made by Danyelle Butler of ArtHaus Ceramics, with the design by her husband, Jared – a real family effort. If you want one, pop on over to Etsy now, where it can by yours for $24 (USD). I think Danyelle should make a whole series of mugs based on game controllers – though it might be hard to make one based on the Kinect.

Portal Stud Earrings Will Make Your Friends Totally Chell-ous

A while back I came across some cool Portal-inspired earrings, but they weren’t exactly the kind of thing you could wear out to a nice dinner. These, on the other hand, would look lovely no matter what the occasion.

portal stud earring 1

These handmade sterling silver Portal earrings from jewelry artist Melissa Hamming show the familiar test subject symbol dude going in one of your ears and out the other. I bet that Cave Johnson’s assistant Caroline wore a pair of these before she was turned into GLaDOS (and then into a potato.)

A pair will set you back $48.50(USD), and you can find them over on Etsy now. Grab a pair for yourself now. For science, you monster.

V-luxe iPad Stand Turns Modern Tablet into Retro TV Set

Most of us are too young to remember when televisions were black and white, and came in wooden cabinets. Heck, some of you guys might not even remember tube TVs. If you’d like to transform one of today’s most popular gadgets into a classic TV set, then check out the V-luxe iPad stand.

vluxe ipad stand 2

The V-luxe stand will hold all three generations of the iPad, and will make it totally look like an old television (with a 10″ screen), especially if you play some classic black-and-white video on it. The swivel stand allows you to view your tablet at a wide variety of angles. Each one of these stands is handmade from quality hardwoods by BKNYdesign, and has a speaker cabinet built into the base for listening to tunes or movies.

They’re available in mahogany, walnut, or cherry wood and will set you back $1500 (USD).

Musical Spider-Bot Will Keep You up at Night

I’ve got enough problems with spiders. They just creep me out. I can handle the occasional daddy long-legs or jumping spider, but giant spiders – forget about it. And giant metal robot spiders are the stuff of my worst nightmares.

giant spider robot 1

This particular giant metal robot spider measures almost 7 inches across, and can even play a tune – thanks to the built-in vintage music box on its back. It plays a warbly version of the nursery favorite Frère Jacques, which is sure to add to the creepiness factor as you keep one eyeball on it while you sleep at night.

giant spider robot 2

It was created by Catherinette Rings and Daniel Proulx and can be found over on Etsy for $700(USD). While that may seem like a lot of money for a robot that can’t actually move – it’s a small price to pay to know exactly what your bad dreams will be about for the rest of your days

Keyboard Wall Art: Mavis Beacon Teaches Painting

Last week, we featured an sculpture of a horse that was made out of old keyboards. While it was truly impressive, there’s no chance you’ll be putting it in your house any time soon. Here’s some keyboard art you might actually hang on your wall.

marilyn keyboard art 1

Christopher Cobell of SketchkeysArtistry hunts down laptop keycaps in a variety of shades of grey to create these masterworks of pixel art. The largest of the current selection is his portrait of Marilyn Monroe shown above. Each one is handmade by gluing thousands of individual keys to a black foam backing, suitable for framing. Though I kind of like the idea of leaving the keys exposed so you can actually feel them.

keyboard art detail

He’s got several other images available for sale in his Etsy shop right now, including a sailboat,  an abstract cityscape, and my personal favorite, a humorous image of a pair of bombs – reminiscent of Bob-Omb.

The artist states that part of his process is to “check for any accidental expletives from the random placement of the keys.” Darn, I was hoping to make that a game for my houseguests – to find the hidden dirty words.

keyboard bomb art 2

Prices for this awesome keyboard wall art range from $179 to $965 (USD), depending on the size and complexity of the image. If you look closely at the bomb image, you’ll see a Windows start key in the  bottom right corner. I wonder if that’s intentional.
