iPhone 5 4-inch Retina display detailed with massive resolution

The iPhone 5′s display has been revealed today at Apple’s press event, bringing with it a lovely 1136 x 640 screen resolution with 16:9 aspect ratio across 4-inches of space. This device will be rolling out with a Retina quality display, mind you, at 326 PPI, amongst the most high-definition on the market today. This display offers a 5th row of icons for the iOS 6 experience and still fits in our hand with the same width as the iPhone 4S and before.

This device has also been shown to be bringing an improved camera on the back – though it is still called 8 megapixels, it’s a big boost, as well as audio and video enhancements as well. The iPhone 5 will come with three microphones for better noise cancellation than ever before as well as an improved A6 chip under the hood. The iPhone 5 is set to bring on a new era of mobile products for Apple with its new 16-pin port plug for USB and will be coming soon to an Apple store near you.

A6 chip introduced for iPhone 5 with fastest-ever performance

Apple has introduced the A6 chip for their next-generation iPhone 5 hardware this afternoon at the event which also showed off several more impressive bits of hardware and software enhancements. The iPhone 5′s A6 chip has been touted as having 2x faster CPU performance than the previous chip and brings on 2x the graphics performance as well. This chip has been shown as bringing on launches of apps at nearly 2x the speed as the previous iPhone on the whole.

With a launch of your Pages app, you’ll be going 2.1x the speed, with an opening of a Keynote app, 1.7x the speed. This device’s chip is also tuned to bring on the best gaming experience the iPhone has ever seen, EA coming to the stage this week to show off its graphics prowess. EA’s Rob Murray showed off Real Racing 3 with “full console quality” and “for the first time, rear view mirrors!”

iPhone 5 mini dock connector photographed with microUSB

Several photos have appeared in the wild this morning showing off what very much appears to be the rumored iPhone 5 dock connector USB cable. This cable’s head is compared to a microUSB cable head, the most common cable head in the mobile device industry today. These cables have been shown to be significantly similar – so much so that we’ll certainly be grabbing twice in our barrel of cords once this new head appears, that’s for certain.

What you’re seeing here is a collection of iPhone 5 (or The New iPhone, whatever you want to call it), cords right alongside some microUSB cords from the Meizu MX, a popular smartphone in China. It would appear that some manufacturer partners have gotten their hands on this collection of next-generation cords in preparation for the iPhone 5 being released later this year. The cord currently appears to have 16 pins – 9 on one side, 9 on the other, interchangeable in the plugging.

With this new cord, the iPhone – and possibly the rest of the Apple mobile universe – will be able to plug without looking. Where before when you’d plug your Apple cord into your iPad or iPod touch or iPhone, you’d have to make sure it was facing forward. Now it’ll be a whichever-way-you-want sort of situation. it’s also been tipped that the cord will be held in with magnets so that if it’s pulled out with force, your device wont go with it.

This device cord will likely appear again on the 12th of this month – Wednesday of this week! That’s the day that Apple holds their iPhone 5 event: and we’ll be there liveblogging the whole event for you! Check our liveblogging portal for all your Apple action right from the sourcd, and don’t forget to check our Apple portal as well for news bits right on the money, as fast as they’re announced!

Kindle Fire HD tablets appear on sale at Amazon

The Kindle Fire HD 7, Kindle Fire HD 8.9, and Kindle Fire HD 8.9 4G LTE are all available for purchase on Amazon now, with their prices being, in order, $199, $299, and $499. The lesser two of the three devices have 16GB of internal storage while the 4G LTE 8.9-inch tablet has 32GB of internal storage – otherwise it’s essentially the same as the wi-fi only model 8.9. These devices work with an updated user interface over the original Kindle Fire and include several software upgrades and features that set them aside from the rest of the ereader and media player mobile universe.

This set of tablets has been revealed by Amazon today and will be shipping starting on the 14th of September – but only in the case of the 7-inch version. Both the Kindle Fire HD 8.9 and the Kindle Fire HD 8.9 4G LTE will be shipping on November 20th, 2012. These tablets may not yet be prepared at a level that Amazon is comfortable releasing them, also evidenced by the fact that our ability to get hands-on time with the 8.9-inch sized tablet this week was limited at Amazon’s main event.

The Kindle Fire HD 7 was, on the other hand, out for all to see and touch and indeed did appear to be in full working order. Amazon hopes to undercut both the Google Nexus 7 tablet as well as the Apple iPad 3 with prices that appear to be lower for devices that work exclusively with Amazon-held mobile media.

One of the more impressive sounding comparisons along this line of possibility was Amazon’s chart showing how the iPad 3 would cost a user hundreds of dollars more a year if they wanted 4G LTE on their device than if they wanted the 4G LTE Kindle Fire HD. The Kindle Fire HD 8.9 4G LTE is being released with a special $50 a year data plan from AT&T that will have it limited to 250 MB a month max. At the moment it’s not known what overage prices will be – if not standard, that is.

On A Mission To Be Mobile Payment Agnostic, LevelUp To Roll Out NFC-Capable Terminals

NFC-dock (1)

As a small startup, the mobile payment space shouldn’t be appealing. Every carrier and credit card company seems to have its own system, the space is fragmented, crowded and no standard for payment mechanisms has emerged. (QR codes, really?) To compete, startups need lots of capital, and then they need hardware.

Which is why you have to give LevelUp some credit. Since relaunching its mobile payment and loyalty solution in October, the startup has raised $31 million from the likes of Deutsche Telekom, onboarded 3,600 merchants (with 800 signing on in August) and eliminated the transaction or “swipe” fees that cost merchants $50 billion each year.

But if it really wants to solve the mobile payments conundrum, LevelUp has to support every method people use to pay with their phones — to be payment agnostic. It’s a tall order, but today the startup added another big piece, announcing new hardware that supports NFC payment for any phone with NFC capabilities.

The iPhone 5 will be unveiled next week and rumors have suggested that the phone is likely to come with an NFC chip. LevelUp’s announcement is thus timed appropriately, as Priebatsch tells us that if the phone does have NFC capability, they look prescient (especially if Apple’s market-shifting ways do the same for NFC) and, if not, they’re still early to market and can take their time rolling out the new hardware.

LevelUp’s first few generations of hardware are already in use among merchants and were developed in conjunction with T-Mobile, which lent its infrastructure and hardware to the startup’s mission. Since Deutsche Telekom (which owns T-Mobile) invested in LevelUp, the startup has worked even more closely with the telecom company to produce its hardware.

The new hardware, which will be free to merchants, supports both NFC, QR code and magnetic strip scanning, so that even if the iPhone 5 doesn’t have NFC, anyone with NFC-enabled Android phones or with any smartphone can pay using the startup’s new terminals.

While Priebatsch did admit that, as trends go, NFC has mostly been hype rather than something people regularly use, he justifies the move by saying that now is as good a time as any. The startup doesn’t plan to slow down with its scaling any time soon, so better to begin rolling out the new terminals before it becomes a bigger, costlier undertaking. (Priebatsch says the company’s goal is to have 6,500 merchants onboard by the end of the year.)

In an effort to be as agnostic as possible to whatever mobile technology wins the mass-adoption race, the startup has also designed the white casing around the terminal so that merchants can easily pop it off. And, if, say, Bluetooth 4.0 turns out to be the winner, Priebatsch says that the hardware makes it easy to open up and slide in a new chip. With telecom hardware backing, the founder thinks this gives them a competitive advantage, as they’ll be able to cheaply upgrade merchants in the event of a Bluetooth winner.

For merchants, the current terminals come with a USB cord outlet so all they have to do is plug-in their POS system, and they’re up and running. If they don’t have a POS system and are just working with a cash register, they’ll need a network connection and a keyboard input — essentially, they’ll need to purchase a tablet. But that’s about the only friction. For the consumer, using the payment network remains relatively unchanged either way.

As of now — though an iPhone 5 with NFC could change things — LevelUp plans to beta testing its new NFC-capable terminals in Boston over the next few months and get all of its merchants upgraded by the end of the year.

Of course, while nixing its 2 percent transaction fees and offering free hardware upgrades is appealing to merchants and certainly brings competitive advantage, LevelUp still has to make money. That’s where the loyalty part of its business comes in. The startup offers a number of customer acquisition and loyalty programs for its merchants, and every time a customer redeems an offer, coupon or deal, for example, LevelUp makes 35 cents on every dollar made through the campaign.

One merchant campaign Priebatsch says the team plans to roll out later this year involves birthdays. Merchants will tell LevelUp that every user that’s spent, say, $25 with them this year should get a $5 coupon in their account. It’s a way for merchants to say thank you to repeat customers, who are thrilled at the merchant’s thoughtfulness and get a free five-spot. Every time they redeem that coupon, LevelUp gets paid. And for all their campaigns, “experimental” or otherwise, the startup tracks redemption, how much they spend at the store so that merchants have a sense of how much value the campaign is actually creating.

The elimination of the processing fees brought LevelUp’s merchant participating in campaigns up to 96 percent. So, although it would seem shaky to rest the entire monetization structure on loyalty-type programs, the large majority of merchants have bought in. So far. Though it will require a lot of customer service, analytics and variety in campaigns to keep merchants happy and to generate revenue, but LevelUp looks to be making the right moves at this point. And if it can continue bringing on big chains and retailers, the idea itself (and no processing fees) might not be so crazy after all.

NFC iPhone 5 or not.
