PopCap Teams Up With Hasbro To Deliver Two Bejeweled Board Games This Year

In the world of match-3 puzzle games, PopCap Games’ Bejeweled has to be the most popular as no matter what platform it was released on, people just seem to flock to it and its addictive gameplay. One platform Bejeweled has yet to make a debut in has been a real world board game, but that is all about to change now that Hasbro has teamed up with PopCap to offer the first-ever physical Bejeweled game early this year.

This spring, Hasbro will introduce two games based on PopCap’s Bejweled game. The first of which is called BEJEWELED and will have players swapping gems on the game board to match three or more jewels to win. Hasbro’s other Bejeweled game, called BEJEWELED FRENZY, will be a fast-paced card game where the objective will be to match gems to build their stacks of cards as fast as possible.

Each board game will come with a digital code to redeem digital goods. BEJEWELED will contain a digital code to redeem a PC / MAC copy of Bejeweled 3, while BEJEWELED FRENZY will contain a digital code that can be redeemed to collect four rare gems to use in Bejeweled Blitz.

Words with Friends and Draw Something Board Games: Gameception

That’s right folks, after conquering social networks and mobile devices, Zynga has wrenched open a portal to the physical realm. Midgard. Middle Earth. Or just plain Earth. The company partnered with Hasbro to release board game versions of their video games that were based on board games in the first place.

words with friends board game

Yes, that is a thing that exists: Words with Friends, the board game. In fact it comes in three editions, all of which have 104 tiles and a 15 x 15 board. Clearly a massive difference from Scrabble, which only has 100 tiles. The scoring and bonuses are the same as the one in the online game, except this time it has an offline single player mode.

Then there’s the Draw Something board game, which to its credit is slightly distinguishable from Pictionary. The Draw Something board game has players guessing each other drawings to get coins; first to 15 get coins wins. Note that Hasbro also holds the rights to Pictionary and to Scrabble (at least in U.S. and Canada, Mattel has it trademarked for the rest of the world). So call them weird – which they are! – but they’re not stepping on anyone’s toes here.

You can order these games either from Amazon or from Hasbro’s online shop for $15-$40 (USD) depending on the game. There’s also a FarmVille board game, but it’s a clone of Hungry Hungry Hippos. That’s just lazy. The Words with Friends board games on the other hand? I don’t care what the world’s craziest indie developer can come up with. These are hands-down 2012′s weirdest board games for me.

Furby pre-orders start at Walmart, threaten your wallet with nostalgia

Furby pre-orders start at Walmart, threaten your wallet with nostalgia

Overwhelmed with nostalgia for a childish pseudo-creature with a glaringly absent off switch? Sounds like you’re looking for a Furby. No, not the old, mangy monster whose batteries died in your toy cabinet all those years ago, we’re talking about a new animatronic animal — one kitted out with capacitive touch sensors, glowing LCD eyeballs and even a companion iOS app. Six colorful variations of the chatty creature are now available for pre-order at Walmart, each commanding a $54 price tag. Not sure if this is the simulated pet you’re looking for? Check out our hands-on and see just how much Furbish you can take.

Mavizon Mavia tracker reaches pre-order at last, makes best friends of cars and iPhones

Mavizon Mavia reaches preorder at last, tracks cars by desktop and iPhone

Remember Mavizon’s plans for its Mavia car tracking device (formerly the AutoBot) from almost two years ago? The company promised availability sometime in 2012, and we’re here in earnest with the car companion ready for pre-order. The business model has changed significantly since 2010, however. It’s a cheaper $169 up front for the Bluetooth cellular OBD-II peripheral — $99 for the first hundred through the gates, or $299 for a two-pack — but the full tracking service will cost $5 a month, or $49 every year. Those who do make the leap can get a look at their car’s vital signs as well as set up geofenced notifications, track long-term performance and receive impromptu driving directions to a friend’s coffee shop check-in. The first batch of Mavia units should arrive within several weeks, we’re told, and should have both browser- as well as iPhone-based apps waiting in the wings.

Hasbro Lazer Tag hands-on (video)

Hasbro Lazer Tag handson video

The NERF has been dropped, but Hasbro’s Lazer Tag system is still the same awesome toy we got a taste of in February. The difference is, now they’re retail ready. Individual blasters, complete with iDevice dock, will hit shelves in just over a week, while packages of two are scheduled for October 1st. The companion iOS app is already available through iTunes, but a rep from Hasbro still describes it as being in beta form (an update is on its way that will remove that tag and simplify the initial set-up). The same rep was also nice enough to swing by the Engadget compound and deliver us a pile of blasters to test ourselves, which we immediately took out for a test run in Washington Square Park. Head on past the break for some impressions and a taste of our “Lazer” battle royale.

Zynga’s Farmville turned into a card game

Farmville MemoryAs though having millions of people on the internet hooked onto Farmville isn’t enough, it looks like Zynga is out to grab more players – this time in the physical games market. According to reports online, Zynga has been forging deals with toy companies and retailers to bring its virtual games into the real world. One such game being developed with Hasbro is called Farmville Memory, a card game for ages four and up.

Not much about the card game has been revealed but the word “Memory” in its title is probably a hint at the sort of gameplay it involves. No word on when the game will hit the market or which games Zynga will be converting into offline titles next but we’ll keep you posted. Mafia Wars board game, anyone?

Furby gets a reboot for 2012, we go hands-on (video)

DNPFurby handson video

Of all the childhood toys to update for the early 21st century, the Furby seems like a no-brainer. After all, the hairy ball of amalgamated animal strangeness packed in electronics so baffled the general public that it managed to get itself banned from the Pentagon as a threat to national security. After the Furby was first decommissioned in 2000 (managing to sell an impressive 40 million units in its first three years), Hasbro attempted to revamp the line in 2005 with Emtro-Tronic Furbies, bigger versions of the toy that brought increased facial emotions and voice recognition, failing to recapture the success of the original line.

The latest addition to the line marks a much more significant update for our old furry pal, bringing him up-to-date for a generation growing up with smartphones and tablets, with revamped aesthetics, new innards and an appetite for Apple’s iPad. We managed to get our hands on the squirming and verbose little Mogwai-esque creature — four of them in fact — for a bit, when Hasbro popped by our office with a furry blue army packed in a duffel bag. Check out some impressions of the reborn furball after the break.
