You’ve Tweeted ‘Em, Now Eat(ed?) ‘Em: Mashtags Social Media-Inspired Snacks

Here’s another way to capitalize on social media: make snack foods inspired by social media elements like emoticons and hashtags. That’s what Birds Eye Foods UK did with their latest offering called Mashtags.

It’s essentially a potato snack with its chips (can you still call them chips?) in the shame of smiley faces, asterisks, at symbols, hearts, and of course, hashtags.

Birds Eye brand manager Pete Johnson explained: “Social media is all about conversation and we’re confident Mashtags will resonate across various groups of people. We’re constantly looking for ways to innovate and inspire consumers and hope that Mashtags will get people talking around the table and help to make mealtimes more enjoyable.”

It’s a fun idea, but it feels like a novelty at best. What do you think?

The Very First Hashtag, @Reply, and Retweet Ever

The Very First Hashtag, @Reply, and Retweet Ever

For better or worse (ok, probably worse), the hashtag, @reply, and retweet have become inextricable from modern language, and it’s hard to imagine a time when saying "hashtag blessed" would have seemed insane. But all things must originate from somewhere, and Quartz has managed to track down the founding fathers of all three.

Jimmy Fallon and Justin Timberlake Do It Again

jfjtWhen hashtags are used the right way, they are a great tool for quickly finding information on Twitter and Facebook. Jimmy and Justin show you exactly how stupid people look when they use hashtags other than a means to get information out to your followers. Even though it is a personal favorite in this video, I would never look up “#thatshowwedo”.

Twitter-Powered Hotel Encourages Visitors To Tweet Their Experience

When you’re visiting somewhere either on vacation or business, we’re sure you can’t help but to tweet or publish a status update talking about where you are and your experience there. Not only do we want to share our experience, but deep down, we also like to secretly brag to our friends and family where we are, and where they aren’t. Now there’s a hotel that specifically wants you to use Twitter to help share your experience as well as communicate with them called @SolWaveHouse.

Sol Wave House offers a number of ways for you to communicate with its staff through the use of hashtags. Need your mini fridge to be filled? Just tweet with the hashtag #FillMyFridge, and you can expect a refill soon. That’s not all as the entire facility seems to have a number of signs with their appropriate hashtag to help them as well as your friends know where you are in the hotel, such as tweeting #BaliBed6 to let them know you’re hanging out at the pool.

If you’re a Twitter addict, pack your bags and head on over to Spain, which is where Sol Wave House is located.

Facebook rolls out hashtag support for mobile web and related searches

    DNP Facebook hashtag related

Clickable hashtags are a major new Facebook feature, and now the social network is bringing them to the next level by rolling out related searches and mobile availability. We’re talking about its mobile site and (unfortunately) not its iOS and Android apps, making the former a better choice for browsing public status updates on the go. The introduction of related searches also makes it easier to discover new conversations, as searching for a particular hashtag brings up similar ones. Facebook analyzes which terms are often posted together, so looking for #equality also brings up posts tagged with #lgbt or #pride. These updates will soon show up on your accounts if they haven’t yet, and unless you despise hashtags, they’re icing on the cake.

Facebook adds clickable hashtag support to your News Feed

Facebook adds hashtag support to status updates

Facebook wants to help you make your conversations just a little more discoverable (if you so desire), and it’s decided to finally include a long-missing feature — clickable hashtags — to the News Feed. If you’ve ever enjoyed hashtag searches on Twitter, Instagram or other social networks (some of our friends enjoy them a little too much, if you ask us), you’ll now have the same feeling of exhilaration on Zuckerberg’s service as you are now able to click on each one. Up until today, any hashtags from imported tweets or Instagram posts just showed up as regular text, with no backlink to accompany them. When it comes to the visibility of your own hashtags, Facebook won’t allow any unintended audiences to see your private updates, so you remain in control of your desired privacy. The company also plans to roll out trending hashtags and other related features in the coming months, but this is a good start for now. The company’s official blog post can be found below.

Flickr Rolls Out Hashtag Support For iOS App

Flickr Rolls Out Hashtag Support For iOS App

Ever since Instagram had a falling out with its users 3 months ago, Flickr has been trying its absolute best to acquire those users, first by updating its iOS application to give it a more Instagram-like feel, then by giving away 3 months of premium service. The service is quite comparable to Instagram, although searching for a specific topic can be rather difficult. Today, Flickr will be making it easier to search through its users’ library to images now that its iOS application has hashtag support.

Hashtag support on Flickr is pretty much identical to other social networks where such tags are used: throw in a hashtag in your image’s description and people can search for that image and others like it simply by throwing in the relevant hashtag. Flickr is joining in on the hashtag fun as well by allowing its users to participate in a weekly photo challenge called #FlickrFriday. (more…)
