Distro Issue 77 hits the road with the Tesla Model S

In April of 2011, we spent some time in the driver’s seat of the Tesla Roadster 2.5 Sport. Its throttle response and dashing good looks earned high marks, but the range anxiety left a bit to be desired. Now it’s the winter of 2013, and in the latest issue of our weekly, we settle in behind the wheel of the Model S to determine if Tesla’s refined offering has the chops to lead the EV fleet. Of course, these vehicles need a place to recharge, so Eyes-On visits one of the aforementioned outfit’s Superchargers that look to make roadtrips a reality for electric vehicles. Aside from the automotive features, OUYA devs sound off on the pros and cons of the console while we put both the HP Spectre XT TouchSmart and Microsoft’s Surface Pro through their respective paces. Time Warner Cable adds ondemand content to its TWC TV website

It’s been nearly two months since Time Warner said it’d start streaming on-demand content on its TWC TV website, but the giant cable provider announced today that customers can now (finally) start enjoying the à la carte service on their desktop or laptop. Similar to its offering on iOS, Time Warner Cable subscribers will have access to more than 4,000 TV shows and movies from various networks and studios, which, according to the company, also includes “certain” subscription-based programming by the likes of Showtime and HBO. Just like the rest of Time Warner’s web TV service, the recently announced on-demand content is also compatible with both Mac and PC (sorry, Linux), and, naturally, that includes support for some versions of all major browsers — including Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari and Chrome.

Roku 4200X appears in FCC filing, shows off smaller footprint

The last time Roku properly refreshed its line of media streamers was back in 2011 with the Roku 2 series but we’re apparently in for at least one new addition, if not a whole new line. This 4200X (the current players are in the 2000/3000 series) just popped up in the FCC’s database, although most of the juicy information was withheld. Still, as seen above, its measurements indicate a box that’s just 2.25-inches on each side, smaller than the current top of the line Roku 2 XS which is 3.3-inches long on each side. Other than WiFi with 2 and 5GHz bands we didn’t uncover much else, although we wonder what the company may add in a new model.

One possibility is the (official) YouTube channel we’ve been waiting for since 2011, which CEO Anthony Wood recently told analyst Michael Wolf “isn’t far away”, but would require new hardware. Otherwise, the current boxes have 1080p output, more than 700 channels, and a Bluetooth gaming remote on the high-end units. Previous FCC leaks of the 2 and refreshed HD saw official launches within weeks, so we should know more about this new version pretty soon.

TiVo Mini DVR extender launches on Suddenlink, gets rental pricing

The TiVo Mini has yet to make its retail debut, but cable provider Suddenlink is now serving up the DVR extender for use with its own services. According to Zatz Not Funny, the outfit is pricing rentals of the boxes between $6 and $12 depending on a customer’s location, and presumably their service package as well. That rental fee nabs users the privilege of slinging live TV from a TiVo Premiere DVR on their network to another television set, in addition to searching for and watching recorded shows. While dynamic tuner allocation is on the hardware’s roadmap, it doesn’t appear to be switched on just yet. Waiting to pick up the hardware from retail shelves rather than take Suddenlink up on its offer? TiVo’s pint-sized offering is slated to ship this spring.

GetGlue update brings personalized guides, feeds to iPhone  and new ads

Conspicuously timed just after a Super Bowl dubbed by some (mostly marketing types) as the “most social ever”, GetGlue has pushed a new version of its app for iPhones. Version 4.0 for Apple’s smaller iOS devices brings many of the social features recently added to the iPad app, as the guides gain personalized recommendations of shows you might enjoy. The main feed brings in even more information about shows being watched by your friends plus a way to easily chat with them within the app. Also improved is the amount of background info available for each show, and reminders for major events, premieres and finales — similar upgrades are listed as coming soon for Android and its mobile website.

Like Foursquare and other location services have shifted focus towards discovery, GetGlue (among others) is doing the same for TV while also improving its profile for businesses. In a move it unveiled with Pepsi during the big game last Sunday, it offers advertisers the opportunity for promoted tied to a particular brand or show, that may pop into your feed if your friends like them. With Twitter itself making a major move into TV experiences it will be interesting how the recently downsized pool of social TV competitors reacts, and who comes out on top. According to GetGlue, 15 percent of all tweets about Pepsi during the Super Bowl came from its app. You can find out if these additions are good ones — your friends wouldn’t share any particularly annoying ads, would they? — by snagging the new update from iTunes.

Sony posts a net loss of $115 million for Q3, stays on track for full-year operating profit

Still-in-turnaround-mode Sony has reported its earnings for the October to December period, and has recorded a net loss of about 10.8 billion yen ($115 million). It did however improve its revenue to $21 billion as the yen weakened, despite slower sales of items like HDTVs and Blu-ray players. Key for Sony is that it managed an operating profit for the quarter of 46.4 billion yen ($496 million) and remains on track to make its business profitable in the next financial year.

Despite Sony’s best efforts — which include initiatives that you’ve heard about like its Triluminos HDTVs, PlayStation Mobile for tablets and phones, 4K and new software for the Vita — it’s cut sales targets in all of those divisions. Projected sales for TVs and cameras fell by 1 million units each, and portable game players by 3 million, as noted by Bloomberg. It’s been a year since Kaz Hirai took the reins, and with his “One Sony” restructuring plan well underway and (what everyone suspects is) a PlayStation 4 event around the corner, 2013 is as important a year as the company has ever had. There will be a new OUYA next year, and the year after that, unlike the traditional game console model, where new hardware ships in five- to seven-year generational increments. “Our strategy is very much similar to the mobile strategy,” OUYA CEO Julie Uhrman told us in an interview this afternoon, following her DICE 2013 speech. “There will be a new OUYA every year. There will be an OUYA 2 and an OUYA 3,” she added. One potentially featuring the recently revealed Tegra 4, perhaps, rather than the Tegra 3 powering the first units? It sure sounds like it. “We’ll take advantage of faster, better processors, take advantage of prices falling. So if we can get more than 8GB of Flash in our box, we will,” she explained.

But don’t fret, nervous game buyer. Uhrman assured us that “all the games will be backward compatible” going forward. When pushed on how this will work, she said, “The games will be tied to you, the gamer,” (like Steam is now) rather than tying your game licenses to the hardware you purchased (like, say, Nintendo’s Wii U).

The first OUYA, set to launch for Kickstarter backers this March and at retail in June, comes with a quad-core A9 Tegra 3 that’s been maxed out to 1.6GHz. Uhrman pointed out that, because of OUYA’s home console form factor (which plugs into a wall, rather than relying on a tiny battery), the console will be, “the best Tegra 3 device on the market.” It also doesn’t hurt that OUYA’s working directly with the Tegra 3’s manufacturer, NVIDIA. She said that NVIDIA has a group of folks dedicated solely to getting the chip driving the OUYA to run at its highest capacity ever. We’ll find out what that means when we get our hands on the console later this year. Google Maps with Street View arrives on Nintendo Wii U in Japan, free for a limited time

True to Iwata-san’s word, Google Maps with Street View is indeed making its way to the Nintendo Wii U this month. Word of the mapping service’s impending arrival first came this past December, but at the time, no mention was made of availability outside of a vague January 2013 launch. As we learned later however, it was pushed back another month but Wii Street U Powered by Google is live in Japan, and will be free through the end of May. After that, there will be a fee for access to the service’s Panorama View-like feature, which leverages the GamePad for 360-degree perspectives.

Of course, you can also peruse both plain and Street View maps from the TV, but that kind of diminishes the gimmicky point of the second screen controller. (Also, you could just use a laptop, tablet or phone for Google Maps — just sayin’.) There’s no word on US release plans or potential pricing, but it’s worth noting the TVii app that’s free here carries a nominal 100 yen charge in Japan. OUYA working with Psychonauts and Words with Friends creators, The Cave also enroute

Ouya working with Monkey Island and Words with Friends creators, The Cave heading to Ouya

OUYA CEO Julie Uhrman took to the stage at DICE 2013 today to reveal two new partnerships, one with Psychonauts creator Tim Schafer’s studio Double Fine Productions, and the other with Words with Friends creator Paul Bettner. So far, that means both Double Fine’s Reds and The Cave are headed to OUYA, while Bettner’s Verse studio only announced it was working on two unannounced titles. “I believe we’re about to see another disruption even bigger than this last,” Bettner said, referring to his previous work in the mobile game space. “Gamers want the App Store in their living room. OUYA will be the first to deliver it,” he said.

The OUYA arrives in March for Kickstarter backers, and in April for the rest of the world (even later for retail). It’s unclear exactly when Schafer and Bettner’s games will arrive on the Android-powered console, but we’d expect The Cave to be there sooner than later (it’s already available on other platforms).
